Tire recall V6 only

after my other recall, i checked if my car needed the new tires on my 3.8 dealer said my vin didnt qualify which is good cause the hankooks are so smooth

Time will tell

Took the car in today for scheduled oil change, tail light recall and headlight alignment. I had emailed the service advisor before hand as I normally do since I stick to one person and it’s always worked for me. My Genesis and Sonata get excellent service. I had asked about the tires when he looked it up on the computer he said my car qualifies but its voluntary. I pondered it for a while thinking about the computer reprogramming for top speed and wanting to be sure that I didn’t lose the great ride and handling that I have now. In actuality I must say I have on rare occasion noticed the fault symptom but really to me it was a minor thing certainly not enough to offset the performance of the tire in general. In the end I decided to have them changed. I don’t really care about the top speed reduction because let’s face it neither I nor any other sane person would be doing 130 mph in a populated area let alone 150 mph. What does concern me is the act of reprogramming the control unit in general. I must admit to being a bit squeamish about that. The tires were ordered and I’ll be notified when they’re in. I’ve wrestled with this decision for a while like a lot us have because like I said I think the Hankooks are very good. Time will tell if it was the right decision.

got my letter yesterday, I'm undecided on what i'm going to do. I'm not thrilled about the ecu mod, But i'm car is currently only being driven once a month of that bc i'm out of the country, So if my tire are ruined from the prolonged sitting then I may not have a choice

Are you really concerned about the ECU being changed to limit top speed to 130 mph? If up to me, it would be limited to 100 mph, so if some kids stole it and took it for a joy ride, it might come back in one piece with engine not ruined.

Modern cars can now be totaled at 30 MPH. Faulty logic. ;)

I don't believe that I used faulty logic, since statistics show that one is much more likely to be involved in an accident when speed increases, especially when you are talking about over 130 MPH.

CHECK THE INSIDE EDGE OF OF YOUR REAR TIRES!!!!!!!!

Sorry for yelling, but if other people are experiencing what my 18" Hankooks experienced, it is definitely a safety issue. My car is almost a year old and near 28,000 miles. I had snow tires on for about 3 months this winter, so I would estimate 20-25k on the OEM tires, but still plenty of tread as I put on a lot of highway miles. I was experiencing a vibration that didn't go away after 5 minutes or so. It was fine at low speeds, but on the highway, it became noticeable around 70 mph and got progressively worse with increased speed. I figured I would rotate my tires to see if it would help and check to make sure no wheel weights had fallen off. When I pulled my right rear tire, this is what I found on the inside edge.

The inside edge was worn down to the belts from the inside edge to about 1" from the edge. The step of missing rubber was in excess of 1/8". It wasn't the whole circumference, but about a foot along one section of the circumference. I had not received my letter yet, but my dealer looked up my VIN and said I was eligible. They got the tires in in a couple days and just got them put on today. There was never any discussion of changing the ECU, but I noticed the tires were V-rated (149 mph I believe). They wanted me to pay for an alignment, but my winter tires showed no signs of uneven wear so I had them perform a complimentary alignment check. Everything was within spec, but I noticed the spec on the rear camber is -0.9 to -1.9. Mine were at -1.8 Anyone with experience with modified suspension setups care to comment whether that much rear camber could cause edge wear this severe? I'm leaning toward defective tires. The dealer was adamant it was NOT a recall but a "customer satisfaction campaign".

Anyways, the vibration is gone. The Michelin tires sound a little noisier on the highway than the stock tires were when new, but it's still a quiet ride. The wind noise off the driver side-view mirror is still louder than the tires.

As a former SCCA racer in my day, for this car, way too much negative camber allowed to be "in spec". Maybe if someone had a thousand pounds in the rear the suspension might splay to that level... For day to day driving, will wear the inside of tire way too early. Also, what was the toe? You could have a combo of total toe ok, but one wheel way off, offset by the other.. Either 1.8% neg camber alone, or combo of toe and camber would cause this. Not concluded as a tire problem you have. Also, if you run the low pressures factory recommends, combined with negative camber would do what you show..

Hyundai Genesis from first gen to second gen, over the years have routine issue with factory alignment right off the boat.. Some attributed to the slack in subframe bolts which the Rigid collar fixes.. Others, just bad alignment or too tight shipping chains on the slow boat coming over.. I took my 2012 to a real accomplished alignment person.. He does resto-mods and race cars... Did that after hearing the stories on this forum (go look up) some time ago.. He showed me the crappy factory alignment, and took a bunch of time to tweak it. I have not done the rigid collar yet.. Was concerned about galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals. However, reconsidering this..

Point is, something is wrong with the car, not the tires, if my hunch is correct.. Find someone really good at tough alignment projects, and custom/mod cars. Yes, your Blizzaks have nit show this yet.. They will with enough drive pavement miles and sporty driving. In my view... And those will not be replaced for free. :)

Now, I am going to take my 2015 in to Ted and see what he thinks. Thanks to you... Hyundai may be two for two..

My suspicion is that Hyundai has tweaked the alignment to provide better handling during test drives, at the expense of even tire wear. That was certainly true for the 2009-2014 models.

That is some unbelievable tire wear. I'm racking my brain trying to understand how wear like that could go unnoticed either as part of prior tire rotations (unless it suddenly happened) or the kind of negative camber that you literally can see just looking at the car. Definitely some kind of crazy geometry issue going on.

I took my 2015 Genesis AWD in for service today. They told me I was part of the recall and they would order new Michelin's for me. Would take a few weeks to get them. They also replaced the cowl and something called a dummy housing as part of another couple of recalls I'd heard nothing about.

I don't mean to be a nitpicker, but unless you receive notice directly from Hyundai Motor America, it is not a recall, but a service campaign or a simple TSB (Technical Service Bulletin). Recalls are serious maters, usually involving safety items that must be reported to the NHTSA. There will be TSB for a recall, but not all TSB's are recalls.

I signed up for the 1 week/$20 service information option on the Hyundai website and have a copy of the actual TSB, 15-01-P18-1, Genesis Sedan (DH) Tire Replacement (Select Care Care-P18) dated April 2015.

Description: Hyundai Motor America is offering replacement tires to owners of 2015 Genesis Sedan (DH) vehicles equipped with Hankook brand tires. The original equipment tires may exhibit a slight vibration and/or road noise, and Hyundai will replace the Hankook tires with replacement Continental brand (19”) or Michelin-brand (18”) tires at the customer’s convenience and with their agreement.
This bulletin describes the service procedure to replace the Hankook brand tires with 19” Continental tires or 18” Michelin tires. Vehicles equipped with 18” tires require a software update which changes the speed governor from 149 to 130 mph to accommodate the tire speed rating change from W for the Hankook tires to V for the Michelins.

In the Important Select Car Care Information, the TSB states:
IMPORTANT: There is no inspection required. At the request of the customer, dealers must replace the original factory installed tires of certain 2015 Genesis sedan (DH) vehicles equipped with 18” or 19” Hankook brand tires with specified factory approved replacement tires, free of charge to the customer, and regardless of whether the customer has experienced issues with the tires:
o If the customer requests to have their tires replaced as part of this P18 Select Car Care program, dealers must replace the tires on the customer’s vehicle at their convenience and with their agreement. [The emphasis is included in the TSB.]

Also noted the following dealer requirement which I don't remember reading about before:
Utilize your Service Rental Cars in order to minimize your service customers’ inconvenience when they are having this P18 Select Car Care customer satisfaction work completed. Reimbursement for Service Rental Cars or third party rentals during this tire replacement will be covered through the arranty claim process with no prior approval required per HMA warranty guidelines.

Thanks for sharing this valuable infomation,....

Thank You for that post. Greatly appreciated. Is there an expiration date noted on there anywhere? I have heard March 2018 but my letter does not state an expiration date.

Thank you for spending the money for all of us and getting some facts. There has been much commentary and opinion spewed on this one, and the facts are really useful to all.

I want you to know you have my personal gratitude.

Still have the Hankooks myself, but this is all usable info to help me make a decision whether to change them out.

I read the TSB multiple times trying to find an expiration date but didn't find one. I even searched for "2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020" in case I missed the date and didn't find any of those dates.
