  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all,
Recently had the oil changed at my local dealership. During the visit they let me know the cabin air filter was dirty and asked if I wanted to have them do it while I was there. The price was reasonable so I gave them the green light.

I haven't had the car (2013 3.8) long but I remember the glove box opening slowly. I had occasion to open it the other day and now it just drops hard!

Was I imagining it or does the glove box indeed have a "soft open" feel to it? If yes, then I need to go back and have them fix it!

Thanks in advance for the help!

Happened to me too a while back and dealer fixed it no problems. Take back as soon as possible and tell them it was not doing this before the work was done. It is a quick fix for them and I experienced no push back. Now, mine was under the factory warranty when it happened...it is supposed to be a slow drop, not a crash drop

The soft open, is a small plastic cylinder that rides inside the tubing. When they serviced the filter they dropped the glove box door and popped that cylinder out of the tubing. They should fix it, their fault.

Thanks all! At least now I know my suspicion was right. Guess I'm calling the dealer today.

Was there a part that fell out? Or is it all somewhere just needing to be re-connected. I just tested my '09 out and its a crash drop, definitely not soft. Can I fix this or have the dealer fix this?

Back in the day - the device that provides the smooth opening was called a "dashpot damper". It snaps out to facilitate lowering the door, and the mechanic puts it back in place after the filter is swapped out. Except he didn't.

This kind of silliness is why I do the work myself.

Ah, that looks like the easy end! After removing the side stops and dropping the glove box, here's what I'm faced with:

EDIT: I found the cylinder that the discs are to slide into behind the dash, but can't get it all to click together through the finger-sized holes which provide "access".

EDIT 2: Got it! 10 easy steps.

1. Open compartment and remove side stop clips.
2. Unclip/detach the post from the storage bin completely.
3. Find the empty cylinder behind the dash and insert the post's black and white discs as much into the cylinder as possible. Some friction will hold it loosely in place.
4. Carefully rotate the cylinder on its hinge (it'll be obvious) until it locks in the upright position.
5. From the upper access hole in the dash storage area (left side), finagle the grey cap down the cylinder until it clicks into place (there are some small tabs that click into the holes on the grey cap.
6. Rotate the cylinder/post assy back down on its hinge and pull enough of the posts bottom clip out of the bottom access hole to complete step 7. (There should be some slight resistance pulling the post out here if everything is connected correctly - this is the functioning soft drop resistance).
7. Re-attach the post to the storage bin.
8. Re-insert side stop clips and close the compartment.
9. Pat yourself on the back.
10. Have a beer.

Thank you!! This is exactly how mine looked. I'm likely gonna recruit some smaller hands though, as I could barely even get the clips out of mine. Bought it used, always opened hard and my dealer service here sucks.
