Sunroof Rattle

Did you see a Technical Bulletin for this repair? I would hold off until you know that Hyundai has a corrective action that is documented to fix the issue.

Just got my 2015 3.8 back from the shop. Three weeks and they replaced the ENTIRE sunroof, glass and all. No rattles and everything is working smoothly. Happy Camper!

But now I'm having problems with the tires they replaced due to the recall. Bounce starts at 60 and gets worse the faster I go. Not a shimmy felt in the wheel, but a slight bounce in my seat - you can see it in the visor and the passenger seat when unoccupied. Anyone else have issues with their new tires? Mine were fine before the recall!

Greetings everyone...

Been gone from the forum for a while - had some real-life matters that needed attending to and required my focus. But... now I am back, and hopefully with some good news for the folks who are experiencing roof rattles!

I suffered from them also - and they became more pronounced as the weather started to turn warmer. When open - the rattle would come from the back. When closed there was a ticking/tapping from the front-right corner. After some investigation with a friend who is a mechanical engineer - we isolated where the problem is, and possibly the why:

I will try to explain here - and post pictures later when I get home.

If you open your roof all the way and then look at the rear corners of the raised panel from the outside of the car - you will see the corners are mounted to a somewhat triangularly shaped mount. That mount then goes down into the rubber seal that protects the track. How things look inside the track is only a guess - but safe to assume there is some sort of roller & guide system in there.

If you grab the corner of the glass and move it up and down while watching the leading edge of the triangle - you should see it shift. The mount pivots where it attaches to the rest of the glass - but that isn't where the problem is coming from. It appears that there is too much play on the inside of the track section - where whatever roller there is mates to the track/guide. If you move the corner by hand and you here a tap/tick/clunk - then that is likely the issue. My left rear corner moved and made more noise than my right rear corner - which seems much more snug and with less play. When I sat in the car and had my friend move the glass - the quiet tap/klunk that I heard/felt when outside the car was much more pronounced when inside... and was the same sound I would hear when driving.

Having isolated the issue - I took it to the dealer and showed both the service writer and the technician the demonstration I explained above. They agreed, took it for a ride and confirmed the issue and went to order a replacement sunroof assembly. They told me they have had to do a few of these for the same issue(s). It includes both pieces of glass, the frame, the tracks, the motor, all kinds of stuff.

Here is the interesting and hopefully beneficial part for us all

When they went to order the part - the ordering system said it was no longer available and had been replaced with a new part number. So they checked - found it was recently added to the system and placed the order. It took more than 2 and a half weeks to get the part in. Their theory is that the assembly has been altered/updated - likely as a result of numerous replacements - and that explains the new part number, backorder and unavailability of the old one.

They had it for just over 3 days once the assembly came in and I got it back last night. Completely silent... both open and closed. No rattles unless I go over a very severe spot of distressed pavement. MUCH better. I checked the corners and there is almost no play whatsoever - and it is quiet when it does move.

Hopefully their theory is right and it continues to remain silent. I shall update here if it returns of course. Otherwise - I shall post pix tonight when I get home from work.

That is interesting indeed!

Sorry meant to do this last night...

I might also add - the dealership made the mistake of showing me their internal invoicing...

Sunroof complete assembly: $2995.00
3rd party installation: $750.00

Here's the sound coming from the roof on my second G2. I actually don't think it's the pano roof on this one - it sounds more like it is coming from the headliner above the driver's door just behind the grab handle. Very annoying as it rattles right in your ear even with music cranked a little.

Roof was tilted open in first part - you can hear the rattle more clearly after I close it at ~ 24 seconds in:

Rolling stop on this one (but I did use my blinker ;)):

As you can see in the videos it happens even on smooth roads, with just the normal vehicle vibrations and is present whether the roof is open, tilted or closed. Will be taking it in to address with the dealer shortly (been too busy to do it sooner).

Very disappointing and unacceptable for a car at this price point and positioning. It is sad that it is the most expensive car in the house and the one with the most rattles (and second G2 with noise issues)! I'm hoping they can locate the issue and fix!

Yep... mine would do that when the roof was closed and from the right-front corner. Tapping & ticking. Drove me mad when I was on the phone and the rest of the car was silent.

I did the replacement with the new part number for the roof assembly that I mentioned a few posts back and all has been well. Take it in. :)

Actually, I drove it around with my wife tonight to better isolate the sound and found that it goes away completely if I pull down the spring-loaded grab handle over the drivers door. I tried it multiple times and it silenced it every time - so it appears the culprit is something loose in there. I'm going to take it off and reinstall tomorrow. Hopefully, that will solve it, but glad it appears to not be the pano roof itself (fingers crossed).

Unfortunately, along with the panel misalignment, it's an indication of gaps in quality control on the assembly of these cars.

I have the 2015 3.8 AWD and the sunroof rattles really bad and it's getting worse. The description is similar to what Nikgen describes above. One of the dealer's comments was "it's all glass what do you expect?". Definitely not this in a 54K car. Any suggestions?

Don't accept that!

"it's all glass what do you expect?"

Answer- I expect you to fix it so it does not rattle! Call Hyundai to escalate if necessary.

See if it goes away if you press up on the overhead map console (no need to press hard; just firm pressure - you actually hear it creak a little as you press it which also shows poor design). That area ended up being the significant source of creaks/rattles on my 2015. They removed and reinstalled that console and it got rid of most of my noise issues.

Also, try what I suggested above. Pull down the overhead grab handle fully and hold it down (no need to pull on it). Do it on all 4 handles to see if that is the problem area. It's been raining here this AM so I have not had a chance to remove, check and reinstall mine to confirm that I can easily fix it myself - but the noise in mine as heard in the videos above is definitely emanating from the driver's overhead grab handle.

Agreed - but I also have come to accept that the occasional creak is inevitable with all of that glass up there, especially when the temp changes a lot. However, persistant rattles and creaks should not be tolerated!

OK - so I opened the covers and checked the 2 screws that hold the grab handle on - but they were not at all loose as I had suspected they might be. I tightened both a little more, being careful not to strip the holes.

Unfortunately, this did nothing and the rattle was as bad as ever. So I decided to just take the handle off completely. I did that and replaced the screws (so I would not lose them) - lo and behold: the rattle is completely gone!!! I took the car out on a few errands and drove for almost an hour. What a difference to not have a near constant rattle in my ear when driving this car!

So the rattle is coming from the grab handle itself. In looking at handle more closely, one of the hinges is spring loaded and the other is not. The one that is not has a lot of play in it and this must be causing the annoying rattle.

Amazing (and frustrating) that a stupid little item like this (that I would never even use anyhow) has been the bane of my G2 driving experience. I'll be leaving the handle off for now and asking the dealer to order me a new one.

Inject some heavy silicone lube in the hinge and you will be fine. :)

I had the same thing and the dealer replaced my entire sunroof, glass and all. It's probably going to become a recall at some point because the 2015 Genesis that they gave me as a loaner while working on mine had a rattle 10x's worse than mine!! Most dealerships are aware of the issue, just make sure where you take yours has done a replacement already - very important to have a mechanic that knows what he's doing with this - it's a huge job!! So far no rattles with the replacement - completely quiet finally!! Good luck!!

I might try that if I was out of warranty, but Hyundai needs to just replace the bad handle on their dime on a brand new car. BTW - no rattle since I removed the handle so I can now enjoy driving the car, instead of being annoyed by it!

I continue to be annoyed by rattles from the sunroof area. I actually find I drive the genesis less than the other car....the other car is older and more plebeian...but no rattles.
I will be taking it back to the dealer.

In the interim I continue to attempt to locate the source of the rattles. I was tapping my fist on the area behind the sunroof controls and heard a pretty distinct rattle in that area. It turns out it was coming from the rearview mirror and the plastic housing between the mirror and the windshield [3.8/awd/ultimate]. If I held the metal shaft of the review mirror and the mirror with the other hand and tapped...the rattle stopped completely. So some of what I heard and thought to be the sunroof, was actually attributable to the rearview mirror and housing. It looks like both the metal shaft and the mirror itself have ball type swivels to allow positioning of the mirror, and somehow that allows something [I think the rearview mirror itself] to vibrate.

Has anyone else notice this or had it fixed?

I had a bad rattle and when I complained the dealer seemed to know exactly what I was talking about. They ordered two new sunroof rails from the factory. About 2 months later (rails were backordered - probably a common problem) I got them installed. Took about 4 days but the rattle is gone now.

I took my car in for the first oil change today and mentioned the sunroof making creaking noises. They looked it up and there was a notice on it. The stated resolution was a dry lubricant that needs applied around the assembly. They were ordering it since they didn't have any so as soon as this gets done I'll update you on whether this fixes the issue.

That notice is not for the G2 panoramic roof - it's from 2009. It might help, but our roofs are a completely different animal.
