If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Rough Ride (rear)

I have not noticed the rough ride in the back, but I will check that. I did notice something odd with wind noise/turbulence and the rear windows open. When either rear window is rolled down (front windows rolled up), there is significant loud staccato-like wind noise...it really hurts your eardrums and it gets worse as you drive faster. Perhaps this is related to the rough ride...not sure. Has anyone experienced this? It happens with either or both rear windows open. Am I just being too sensitive?

Re: rough ride

To expect Hyundai to replace all Genesis models sold that may have issues is silly and completely unrealistic. Should they fix known issues/problems? Yes. Should they buy back a car because someone finds the ride in the rear seat rough? Absolutely not.

If the hard ride in the back is actually an issue, than Hyundai should look into the problem and do whatever they can to fix it. If it's just a matter of people being picky, than that's a different story.

This is what we're trying to get to the bottom of here (in this discussion). Apparently, enough people are finding this to be an issue for us to be discussing it. Not only your average Joes, but your automobile reviewers as well. So we need to figure out whether this is an "issue", or simply a preference - where some people feel the ride is stiff (or bangs) - or not...

Keep in mind that the first version of the Cadillac CTS-V blew rears. This was an "issue" and Cadillac fixed the problem under warranty. If the ride in the back of the Genesis is too soft - soft enough that the car hits the "bump stops" over rough surfaces, than this is probably something they'll need to look into. Maybe the rear end weighs more than they had expected.. Maybe when there's more weight in the back than anticipated would be placed there - this happens... It's not unreasonable to assume there's a problem...

chuman,
I've had the exact same problem on our 2003 Honda CRV. I think it has something to do with air flow while the windows are open.

However, I've read that the increased wind resistance you experience while driving fast with the windows open actually burns more extra fuel than running the air conditioner. So if I plan on driving at faster than 30 mph or so, I keep the windows shut and just turn up the A/C.

Lots of lively debate on the suspension.

I just took several co-workers on a 120-mile road trip that was 90% highway. I specifically asked for opinions on the rear seat comfort. My follow up question was if they considered the ride "rough". Feedback was positive - compliments of a very smooth ride. However this is the Florida Turnpike we are talking about, not Big Sur or Smoky Mountains.

Tuning the suspension to find the perfect balance between smooth ride and firmness on uneven surfaces must have been a difficult task. Perhaps one that will not please all drivers all the time. (Unless customers are willing to pay for preset suspension settings as an option).

So my advice to anyone interested in the car is when you test-drive a Genesis, also spend 5 minutes in the back seat if this is important to you.

The rear suspension tuning probably has a lot to do with the weight present, when they did it. How big/heavy is the average Korean engineer? Or, the average weight of their populace vs. ours? Now load in two 210-220lb dudes in the rear seats and 4 golf bags in the trunk and head out to the club. Bet you hit the stops. :)

There you go. That's exactly what I think happened.. Now if this is the case - is it an "issue"? I would say it IS.

I have been noticing that my Genesis rides rougher then the Infiniti I traded in. Very bumpy ride especially when people in back seat. I have checked the tire pressure and when cold they are below 32. Has anyone else noticed a rough ride?

Are your saying with passengers in the back seat that the whole car rides rough no matter where your sitting front or back? Or is it the back seat passengers that are complaining of the rough ride?

Either way this isn't good! Does everyone experiance this? After waiting and waiting all of this time for the V-8's to get here and now that its getting close this comes up. I'm not sure what to do now? I have test drove a few but now I will certainly have them drive the car with myself, my wife, and son sitting in the back to evaluate the ride before buying.

Has anyone mentioned this to Hyundai yet to see what their take is on the problem?

This looks like one for Edvoyleshyundai to investigate. While no one likes miles put on the brand new cars out on the lot it might be worth it for you and your co-workers to load up and check every Genesis that you have in stock to see if this thing is a very common problem. It should be reported to Hyundai ASAP!

In the mean time if I ask for advice on whether to buy or not I'm sure many of you will say hold off for now. Darn and I got so close............:(

Reminds me of the SNL spoof-mercial of the Rabbi in the back seat performing a circumcision... Now that Caddy had to have a smooth ride!

I have not had anyone in the backseat (other than children) to give an opinion, however, I have experienced the exact same "porpoising" that the reviewer described when on certain roads. Specifically, there is one local highway that I travel everyday (Musher51 - not sure where in MN you live but I am talking about 100 North just North of Crosstown) where there is a set of rhythmic dips in the concrete road and the Genesis really travels up and down.

My Avalon did not do the same thing on the same patch of road, but then again, the Avalon pretty much floated everywhere and is not 1/2 the car of the Genesis...

I wouldn't say "wait"...I've had mine since 8/2...about 2500 miles ago, and the ride is great. I'll admit I don't ride in the back seat very often...while I am taller than average (6'2") my legs won't reach the pedals from back there! Seriously, I haven't experienced (directly, or from passengers) any negative commentary about so-called rough ride while in the back seat.

Go ahead...get out your ink pen, and sign the sales contract! You'll be VERY glad you did!

That is such a classic! And BTW it was a Crown Vic or a Mercury not a caddy IIRC.;)

(

Put a bunch of the salesman in the back seat - tell em the ride is too rough - take off another $1,000 on the price.

I have noticed that the car rides rough even when I am alone. At least rougher then my Q45 did or the Lexus 400 I had before that. It may be that this is designed to be more of a sport sedan then the others but still seems too ropugh to me. I prefer a nice soft ride that is smooth. If I want a sport car, I will buy one. I am going to ask the dealer about it and maybe they can do something to the rear suspebsion that will reduce the roughness. This is my only complaint about this car and if it can't be fixed, I will still drive it. Skipped the premium Tech package with navigation and bought a Maestro GPS unit at Rado Shack for $80 that I stuck in the upper left edge of the windshield where it can not be seen from the outside. It works fine and gives me what I want when I need it otherwise sits there out of the way turned off.

I was just wondering if maybe you should have used the words "as smooth" instead? Like it doesn't ride "as smooth" as your Q45 or Lexus.

When you say rough do you mean extreme or what? Somewhere I think one guy stated that the back seat reminded him of a school bus! Remembering back when I rode a bus I find this hard to believe. But if that is the case I would have to say that is completely unacceptable and that alone would kill sales of the Genesis. I just don't think it could possibly be that rough.

Interesting thing is I have test drove 2 Genesis cars and both were quite and had a smooth ride (I thought). The other thing is I have been reading customer reviews on both Yahoo and Edmunds and so far most people are very happy with the car and virtually no problems are mentioned.

What I would like to see since this forum is getting bigger all the time and has more and more Genesis owners is to start a survey on their cars listing if they are trouble free or list any problems. Maybe have the percentages totaled up kind of like the accessories survey.

In my opinion this would be more useful for all of us potential buyers out here trying to gather as much actual information as possible.

Okay! Not "as smooth" as my Q45 or my Lexus. Checked with the dealer who informed me that this car would indeed seem "not as smooth" since it suppose to be a Sport Sedan. When I say rough, I don't mean that you are being knocked out of your seat but just that you can feel the bumps in the road more then I could before. I still am not the least bit sorry I bought this car especially since a comparable car would cost about $15,000 more. I can stand a sligthly rougher ride for that kind of money.

Thank-you for your detailed report! I hope I didn't come off as being a smart
-ss with my question. I assure you it was not meant in that way. You honestly had me puzzled on that one. Especially when others jumped on board saying theirs were rough to. Thank-you again and glad it wouldn't have effected you in buying the car.

Thanks for the more specific feedback. I wonder how things will progress with time. Most all new cars loosen up a bit over time as the shocks/struts and springs "break-in". If after a few months still find yourself wanting a smoother ride, you may want to look at picking up some different tires (tires make a HUGE difference), and or downsizing to the base 17" wheels/tires. The larger sidewall should help absorb impacts better. I did a quick search on Tire Rack and found a couple good options if a quiet/smooth ride is of utmost importance. These tires have garnered quite a bit of praise in surveys/testing for providing a smooth ride and low noise levels FWIW: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...ed_rating=Y&speed_rating=(Y)&minSpeedRating=H

Either way, glad to hear you're *mostly* happy w/ your Genesis. :)
