I'm trying to figure out if we can deactivate the smart, or adaptive, cruise control. I just don't like it all the time but unable to disable it. (2010 sedan 4.6L w/Tech package)

Do you mean actually turn it completely off or just the smart aspect?
If the former, of course you can.
If the latter, just vary your distance. You have a choice of about 180 feet, 130 feet, and 80 feet.
But without knowing the specific complaint it's hard to offer a suggestion.

I have to say I wondered as well, having only put ~4 thousand miles on the car I'm having trouble totally trusting it, but so far I am quite impressed with it. Something I wasn't even aware of and it's one of the features I really like. I do confess my foot hovers above the brake quite often though.

When I was first getting used to it, my thumb hovered close to the cancel button in the steering wheel. Now, although I trust it totally, I use it only where traffic is not congested. IMHO, no cruise control was ever designed to be used in heavy, in-town traffic or where there is ice, snow or very wet roads. I believe under these conditions, the car will do just fine, but many drivers won't handle the car well if there is a rapid, unexpected response by the adaptive CC (or any CC system for that matter).

Wow! Sorry, thought I had explained adequately, but, obviously not. I mean "on all the time" as when the cruise control is turned on. Hope this explains it. No suggestion needed. The answer has been given by others.

I love the smart cruise but I notice a change in behavior between the short and long distance keeping feature. If you keep it on 1 bar then the car is quite jerky. If you keep it at 3 bars it behaves noticeably smoother. It's still somewhat nearsighted and tend to react a little aggressive on mainly the breaks. Acceleration is a little all over the place. At low-mid speeds and with slight adjustment it's too agressive (accelerate/brake). When things suddenly clears up and you want to go from 55 yo 75 it can be way to slow to react/accelerate.

Overall it's a great system and I use it daily in Boston high way traffic. I find that on the highway (even in rush hour) it allows me to relax a bit more. I do tend to play with the distance button as I drive. If someone cuts in front of me I go from 3 (or 2) bars to 2 (or 1). Makes the slow down smoother. Once distance is regained I tend to back up to 3 bars (2 in more congested traffic).

It's one of the main reasons I went with the Tech package and to me it lives up to it's expectations.

Does anyone know if the brake lights come on when the "smart cruise" control is actually braking?
