    Default Oil weight choice

I know my car calls for 5w/20, but I was thinking of going with something like 0w/20 or 30. Reason is I get a lot of start up chatter/knock. Only does it for 2 seconds or so, but its very noticable. I tried switching to Mobil 1 5w/20 but it did'nt help with the knocking at start up. Anyone try the 0w stuff?

    I use 0W Mobil 1 in the winter...the 2 second chatter remains.

The 0W-20 oils are a good idea, especially if you are driving repeated short distances, or live in a very cold climate. It may or may not help with the start up noise, which is normal, but annoying.
Keep in mind the oil may have nothing to do with the noise that the car is making. There are about a dozen reasons why the car is making that noise, and most have nothing to do with the oil.
I would try the 0W-20 synthetic, if the noise persists or gets worse, I would have the dealer look at it.

Noise is never gonna go away. It has done it since new and I now have 14K miles. I posted last year when I got the car about it and had it back to the dealer. As you said, its considered "normal"

I know you are not going to want to hear this, just as I did not want to believe this.

They all do this when the temperatures are very cold.

The worse I had it with my Genesis was last December out in Roswell one morning when the temperature was 11F when I started the car. It clacked and rattled for a full five minutes before it quieted down. On other days, when the temperatures were in the low 20's on start-up, still had the clacking but for a much shorter period of time. The warmer the morning temps, the less noise at start-up. BTW, this is the very same noise that the engine makes when you change the oil and FILTER, because it takes a few seconds for the filter to fill with oil and lubricate the engine. When you have a dealer or lube place change the oil and filter, you are not there to hear it, but believe me, it does make that noise (at least the 4.6 does).

3.8 does the same thing. I do not know why Hyundai can not put a check valve in the line leading from the oil filter to prevent drainback. It seems like it could easily be done with little engineering.

If I lived up north where the temps get below freezing I'd be using 0w/20 during the winter months. But where I live, freezing is not a normal occurance so I continue with 5w/20 synthetic oil. BTW I only get the chatter/knock once in a while for one to two seconds.
