Default Programming a used Smartkey? Can it be done?

    Members don't see this ad
We lost one of the smartkey keyfob/remotes for our 2009 Genesis. The dealer is telling me $315 for a replacement one. Ouch. Another dealer quoted me $275, plus $14 to cut the key inside the remote.

Used ones are on eBay for much less.

If I buy a used one, and then take it to the dealer with the car and the one smartkey we still have, will the dealer be able to re-program the two keys and the car to all work together? The person I spoke to at my dealer did not know if this could be done.

    Thanks.

    Dave

I don't know for sure, but how much will the dealer charge for a reprogram of a fob you purchased somewhere else?

they quoted me a key fob before. they told me that the main cost is the labor to set it up. it would take them 1.5 to 2 hrs to set that thing up.

Programming of the fob is around $50 if I bring in a used remote. Programming is included if the remote is purchased at the dealer (at least that is what they told me).
My dealer has now looked into this and they tell me they can program a used one.

If you buy a used one, you will need a new phyisical key (plus pay to get the key cut). A used smart key with a key that has been previously cut, probably cannot be cut again for your Genesis. So you may need to figure that into the cost also.

Do you have part number for a smart key with physical key, and part number for just physical key?

the part number is 95440-3M100. That is with the blank key in it, ready to be cut.
A used one will have the key already cut, and that key will not work in my car unless I replace it and get it re-cut. But since I have never used the key, that is not a big deal to me. Just really want the remote/fob thing.

You can get the part new for $210.92, plus shipping (but no tax), but that would not include programming or key cut.

The key is unique to the car----a used one cannot be reprogrammed. You have to buy a new "virgin" key---I am speaking from experience in trying one purchased on ebay

My experience says it can't be reprogramed. My 2011 Sonata SE was totaled in a T-boner and I wound up with two brand new fobs from the totaled car.

On the Sonata Owners Forum, I sold one to a member who tried unsucessfully to have it re-programed. The fob is exactlty like the Genesis fob.

I still have the other one if anybody wants to try.
