Today I installed the Hella Supertone horn set on the 2012 Genesis 4.6 sedan. It is a pretty easy install.
Once you remove the front bumper assembly everything is very accessible. One existing horn is located on the left and one on the right hand side. The one on the driver’s side is right in front of the windshield washer tank. The one on the passenger side is right next to the electric power steering motor.
I also noticed that there is a boat load of empty space in these front corners.
Here are the horns to compare. Hella is on the left and OEM on the right.
One nice thing about the existing horn is that the mounting brackets are almost identical to the Hella mounting brackets. You’d think the engineers collaborated together to make it easy to swap out the horns.
So, here’s how I did the mod;
Remove the front bumper by removing the plastic clips under each corner of the bumper…
And across the top…
And there is one screw to remove on each wheelwell…
Now pull on the corner of the bumper where the screw was just removed and it will snap out. Pull a little more to disengage the bumper from under the headlight. Do the same thing on the other side and the bumper will be hanging by the fog light harnesses and the harness for the parking sensors.
Disconnect the connectors from the fog lights and disconnect the parking sensor connector (move the cam lock bar) on the driver side and the front bumper can be moved out of the way.
Here is the existing horn on the driver side.
Here is the existing horn on the passenger side.
I started on the drivers side first for no particular reason. Unplug the harness from the horn and remove the bolt holding the horn onto the structure. Snip the wires close to the connector. Attach female spade crimp terminals onto each wire.
Using the same bolt that was used for the original horn, mount the Hella in the same location. Note: Before mounting I loosened the nut on the back and rotated the Hella horn about 180 degrees about the bracket so the terminals were closer to the wires.
Attach the wires to the Hella male spade terminals and you are good to go. It should look something like this. If doing it again I would add about 4 inches of wire to the existing wire first so they are not so tight.
Now do the same thing on the passenger side. Unplug the harness from the horn and remove the bolt holding the horn onto the structure. Snip the wires close to the connector. On this side I did add 4 inches of wire and then attached a male spade crimp terminals onto each wire. Much cleaner this way.
Using the same bolt that was used for the original horn, mount the Hella in the same location. Note: Before mounting I loosened the nut on the back and rotated the Hella horn a little about the bracket so the terminals were in a better position with respect to the wires.
Attach the wires to the Hella male spade terminals and you are good to go. It should look something like this.
Go give the horn button a push and see how you like it!
After verifying it all works, put the front bumper on in the reverse order that you took it off. You’re done!
