If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi guys, heres a quick video showing the play in the shifter of my 2012 Genesis 3.8 Premium, with 38000 kms. Dealer has looked at the issue and says it is "normal" but I'm not ready to accept that yet. My previous car, a sonata Hybrid, was rock solid feeling. I drive with my hand on the shifter, and whenever I hit a bump or transition in the road, I'll feel a "clunk clunk" under my hand as the shifter moves. I cant imagine this is normal on a car of this level. I plan to escalate the issue if I get enough responses here that indeed it is NOT normal. Please have a quick look at the short vid and let me know what you think please and thanks!! Once I get some responses I'll link my dealer to the thread and hopefully they will agree to investigate further.

Nice video showing exactly what you mean. Though I have only 4,400 miles on it, mine doesn't do that. No telling what it'll do when it's a few years old.

My 2010 doesn't do that either

Now do a search in your local area on Autotrader or CarGurus and see if there is a local dealer (any dealer) that has a 2012 Genesis for sale. Then go check it out and take a video of that car showing that it doesn't have the play then go visit your dealer. Wish you luck.

When all else fails, contact Hyundai directly and file a complaint.

Your shifter is just like mine. It's normal.

Your mpg looks quite ABNORMAL, however.

Ernie, The play in the shifter doesn't bother you?

LOL on the mpg.

It is difficult to tell from the video but I would guess the play in my shifter is less than yours although it does have some. My car also has a lot fewer miles on it than yours as well.

What would worry me is the "clunk" you describe when the car is upset. That would indicate a mounting bolt or bracket is loose and the transmission is moving around and that is definitely not normal.

Sorry the clunk I tried to describe is just the movement of the Shifter, nothing mechanical or sinister. Maybe its just the tactile movement that bugs me because I feel like it should be firm and solid. Thanks for the replies all, keep them coming please.

IMO the shifter play would be "in range"

My BMW has about the same play if it makes you feel better and no it doesn't bother me.

All those years of rowing through the gears on a manual make me keep my hand on the gearshift while driving.. If you do the same thing you may catch yourself putting unnecessary pressure.

If I had to guess there would be some sort of rubber bushing inside of the system(to keep your hand from vibrating w/ the engine).. A little play in that bushing is no big deal and i'd suspect you or a previous owner may have caused the play by resting a hand there or subconscious weight on the shifter..

Then again it could just be shoddy build quality on that particular part.. better there than somewhere important.

Canadian mileage is measured in litres/100 kilometers. 9.6 works out to roughly 27 or 28 miles per imperial gallon.

Thanks. Hard to see the unit of measurement when viewing on the iPhone. OP doesn't mention Canada either.

Ernie, I thought you were joking when you mentioned my ABNORMAL MPG, especially when I mentioned my car has 37000 "kilometers" on the odo. Yessir, if I was getting 9mpg, there would be a serious problem beyond the shifter play lol. As it stands, I'm getting about 8.5 l/100km with mixed driving which I'm quite pleased with. My Hybrid averaged around 6.5 with similar driving mix.
