Engine Sputter?

Hi everyone -

Well today on the interstate I was cruising along at about 90MPH (...and no, I wasn't the only one going that fast) and the engine started to sputter. I could actually feel it, but I don't think the engine lost power or speed.

Do you think this is a concern or something that I shouldn't worry about? I called the dealer and they said I could bring it in, but would have to charge $90 for a diagnostic. I've never felt this before and presume it didn't have anything to do with my speed. The RPM's were a cool 2.75 and just cruisin' along with everyone else.

Has anyone else experienced this sputter before?

Also, when I start the car the engine shakes a little bit. Not much really, but enough to make the passenger seat wiggle just a little bit.

I would wait to spend any money on something that happened once. If it's reoccurring then take it to the dealer and it should be fixed under warranty. Yes the engine makes a little noise on cold starts but goes away when it's warm. The car's not perfect but it's still pretty darn good, and better than anything else I looked at in the 35k range. When I first got the car I treated it like a rare Faberge Egg. Now I'm coming to the terms that it's going to get scratched, dented, and dirty.
If it makes you feel better try switching to 91 or higher gas, or fully synthetic oil. It's pretty much unnecessary in this car and a waste of money if you ask me, but it may have a placebo effect, at the very least it will make you feel like you are being proactive.
 
"Sputter" can be caused by momentary lack of air, fuel, or ignition. If it was fuel or ignition it is more likely that the cause will come again and be more constant. But a clogged fuel filter might obstruct fuel flow at 90 mph. You can clog a fuel filter with a very bad tank of gas.
You were at 90 mph. sucking in a bit of air. A momentary obstruction, say some leaves sucked up against the air filter, might cause an obstruction. As your speed dropped, suction against the air filter would drop and the leaves might drop to the bottom of your air box. So, I would check your air filter first. If nothing there, drive the car with your cell phone at hand; and see if the condition will reoccur.
 
Why in the world would they try to charge you $90 to investigate something that sounds like a defect covered by warranty?

Good question. You got me... I'm sure I could talk them into not charging me. They probably figure it is something that a quick diagnostic will not pick up on the computer and feel it was a waste of time.

I guess I'll wait and see if it happens again. I am already using 91 octane and synthetic oil so no placebo affect here.. ha.

My car is parked in a heated parking gararge and that temp is always 60d.

I brought my car in today. I'm having a wheel/balance/tpms situation checked out along with the engine hesitation/sputter at high speeds.

I'll let you all know what happens... I have a feeling that the phone call will be nothing more than, "We couldn't find anything wrong with your car".

To anyone, when driving at higher speeds... lets say 65 to 90mph, does your passenger seat wiggle side to side? Mine does and thats why I want to get the wheels checked out.
 
Most dealers charge a diagnostic charge no matter what... if the problem is covered under warranty the diagnostic fee is paid for. If they can't find the problem or it is not covered under warranty, you have to pay the diagnostic fee.

It depends on the issue. For instance, I have a flaw in my interior... they just looked at it, and ordered the piece. If a technician needs to look at it, they usually charge.

Well, as predicted no codes were found that showed any kind of engine problems. I kind of figured this was going to be the case. I also had them check my tires and rims and fix my tpms sensor because the amber light is always on.

About 15 minutes into my drive the tpms light came back on.... at this point I don't really care anymore... its my winter tires and rims that are on now so I'm hoping when the summer tires and rims get put back on everything works.

I actually made a secondary trip to a reputable tire shop to get a road force balance done. The car seems to drive a lot better so we'll see how that goes.
 
I have a 2010 4.6 V8 model and had engine sputter twice in the two months that I have owned the car. Including these two times plus two others for a total of 4 times, I've had the check engine light illuminate. The first time the car died and had to be towed to a dealership. They could not replicate the problem. The second time the dealer replaced a vacuum line. The third time they found one bolt on the manifold that was not adjusted to proper torque settings. For the fourth time, the car is still in the shop (6 days) and the dealer stated that they are replacing the manifold cover because that is all they can figure is wrong. So in summary, I've had the car less than two months and it has been in the shop 4 times for over 11 days. Has anyone had a smiliar problem?

I never had the sputter the OP had, although I did have one instance where I started the car and it idled very rough for around 5 secs and it never did it again.

On another note. Had anyone noticed that right around 83-84 MPH the engine (V6) sound changes tone and becomes a touch rough? On a recent trip at speeds hovering between 80-85 it was noticable. I wonder if it has to do with the VVT engaging as RPMs increase. I don't believe its anything wrong, it was just funny to me that at exactly that speed it became noticeable and just backing off a MPH or two it would disappear.

Never had this problem, but you're covered under warranty and it wouldn't cost you a thing to get this checked out. Anyone who tells you different is either A) an idiot, B) hoping you don't know any better and trying to price gouge you, or C) both.

I have begun the process of having my vehicle replaced under the Florida Lemon Law. After five trips to the repairshop (all covered by the warranty) in the first 60 days, my salesman, dealer sales manager and dealer general manager have all stated that Hyundai needs to replace my Genesis. Initial interactions with Hyundai Motors of America have not been good. I've talked with several employees and none have any record of my previous conversations with other employees. I'm waiting for an appointment with the South Regional manager.

Did you have engine sputter? Is that why it was in the shop?
 
Yes, it was engine sputter. To update my previous entry, after the 5th trip to the shop in less than two months, they replaced the fuel pump. It SEEMS to have solved the problem. I have had the car for one week and have driven 200+ miles without 'sputter' or the 'check engine' light illuminating. However, a more critical issue is the fact that Hyundai Motors of America's response/communications have been non-existant. It troubles me that I am a 2010 Genesis owner, which is their premier automobile, and they have been silent. My converstions have been with lower-level employees. It has been almost two weeks after I was promised a telephone call from the regional manager. I fear that this is an indication of their dedication to solving comsumers' problems.

2010, ''...a Premier Automobile''...LOL...14 years old - it's ancient! In this amount of time and ownership, any car is going to see some trouble. They don't run forever. They do need to be maintained. You've been duped!
