I was combing through the hmaservice.com website and took a look at the ECU upgrades section. It listed all the ECU upgrades releases for various Hyundai cars.

Here are the upgrades I saw for the Genesis (sorted by the most recent):
#178 BH 3.8 ECM UPDATE
#148 BH 4.6 ECM Update (DTC P0456 Logic)
#147 BH 3.8 TCU IMPROVEMENT
#143 BH 4.6 TCU UPGRADE FOR A/S PART
#138 BH ACU UPDATE
#111 BH 3.3/3.8 P2135 AND P0638 DTC LOGIC

No dates for the update releases were given, just ID numbers.

It seems to me there were two transmission control unit upgrades, one for the 3.8 and one for the 4.6.

Can anyone make sense of this for me? Could this contain the update some of you have been looking for (transmission hesitation, lack of overdrive, etc)? Are these just updates to bring the 09 models up to 10 spec? Do you think my dealership would know how to upgrade my TCU (so far they've been clueless about everything)? Anyone know what an ACU is? Any thoughts?

I saved the web pages to a pdf:

Interesting find. I wonder if it's a software upgrade for the transmission like you said. If so, and if it's indeed to fix the hesitation problem, it's great news.
ACU.. Airbag Control Unit, maybe?

So, some major revelations at the dealership yesterday.

1) There were ECU and TCU (transmission) upgrades for both V6 and V8 models. Since my build date was so recent (Feb10), my computers(?) are up to date. BTW: I never had any of these "hesitation" problems so maybe a new flash is the way to go for some of you.

2) My dealer has the ability to wipe out the "cumulative adaptive transmission data" that my drive train has accumulated so I can start a new learning cycle. I had this done and, whoa... what a difference! I guess my transmission is a baby again. I'm teaching it everything again.

3) When re-programming your transmission TCU, you should do the following:

  • do not use cruise control for two weeks.
  • remember that this adaptive learning mode does not change the gearing ratios (dammit).
  • must move your right foot as if it was moving in super-slow motion. Easy on... easy off.
  • Drive like you want the transmission to behave... use the shift-tronic if you want it to learn specific speed/shift associations.
  • realize that if you still don't like it after two weeks, have it erased again and try again with a different driving pattern/strategy.

Wow!!! I think this is something I'll have to do. I'll be honest, my dealer doesn't seem like the type of people that are all up into the latest and greatest. I hope they don't give me the runaround... My build date was April 2009

ps. I'm having no luck on the PDF file.... I click download and I get a file with a little red x as a gif or jpeg. Anyway you could try again? Thanks so much for finding this.

...and how long did it take for the dealer to flash TCU? ALso, what would the ECU update do if people were to have problems?

This is really great info!

My tranny irritates me when I just feather the car, it has a lag. I bought my car in May, so I'm thinking my tranny has the latest and greatest software but the idea that I can reset the learning is awesome.

Thanks for sharing this, I'm going to call me dealer and see what he has to say.

After reading this thread, I called up my dealership and talked to my service advisor and told him about this thread with the ECU updates and TCU updates.

He said he would look for any updates under my VIN#. I gave it to him and he said the only thing that came up was a recall for a airbag module or something like that?

He said he was suprised my car didn't have this recall done yet?

But nothing came up under the TCU update for my VIN?

Is there anything else I should've asked him?

What is the build date of your car?

What is the build date of your car?

The tag on the inside of my door says Sept 09/08:confused:

Does that show the exact build date of the car or just when they slapped that tag on?

The "Airbag Module" update (not a recall) is an easy one for a dealer to do.
I had it done 14 months ago in Phoenix at Chapman Hyundai on Bell Road. Took them all of 10 minutes to do. They even gave my car a free wash and mini-detail.

If this forum has taught us anything, it's that our dealers know almost nothing about the Genesis.

My service adviser told me there were no TCM updates at first. I then showed him the printout from the hmaservice.com website. He went back to talk to the tech. When he got back I got a, "Oh yeah, there were updates."

The tech couldn't tell me what the updates were for but he could tell that I already had them. So my ECU and TCM were left alone but I had the adaptive data zapped. The entire checkup and transmission adaptive data erase took about 15 mins.

Driving home from the dealership the trans was very jerky. Later that day, it had calmed down. Today when I went to the movies, it was almost back to normal. After two weeks, I'll update everyone on my results. I can't wait till I get to use my cruise control again.

Here's the printout again:

Thanks for the response LowBlow. I actually found the information on the HMA website so I'll show my dealer when I go there. I've seen them on the exact same system....

@Gabe- I have a feeling you're going to have to tell your dealership that your tranny is acting very funny.... explain how and what feels wrong. Then tell them that you have access to the same information they do and there are updates that need to be done. Basically hold their hand.... Inputting a VIN number does absolutely nothing for TSB or anything of that sort. For instance the "telescoping steering wheel" TSB wouldn't show up if they just inputted your VIN.

I'll make a phone call either Monday or Tuesday.... I think my tranny is legitimately messed up. I'd like to start from zero if possible.

Ok guess I'll try that route when I have time to take the car in and see where I get with that approach. Thanks

LowBlow -

I just called my dealer and walked him through the website. He didn't know what those #'s were all about and didn't seem like he wanted to look into them at the moment. Did your dealer know right off the bat what they were or did they need to make some phone calls to Hyundai Engineers? I'm bringing my car in on Monday of next week to have them look into my transmission.

Thanks,

Thanks,

My adviser knew right away that the "BH" designation was for the Genesis. He knew what the "DTC P0456 Logic" upgrade was about. It was for how the ECU handled diagnostic information regarding the evaporator module. It's an OBDII (on board diagnostics) code.

http://www.obd-codes.com/p0456

He couldn't tell me what the other things were and that he would have to call Hyundai. I told him not to bother and just give me the latest upgrades. After the tech tried to, that's when I was told that I already had them.

What's your car's build date? TIA.

Driving home from the dealership the trans was very jerky. Later that day, it had calmed down. Today when I went to the movies, it was almost back to normal. After two weeks, I'll update everyone on my results. I can't wait till I get to use my cruise control again.

UPDATE ON MY PROGRESS:

It's been a month now since the tech erased the adaptive data on my TCU and I can say that everything is completely normal again.

Acceleration changes: My acceleration shifting has always been excellent and exceedingly smooth so I've never had a problem with it. I'd say it's exactly back to where it was before.

Deceleration changes: The downshifting and engine breaking are now better!! However, the changes are not significant, I'd say it's about 15% better, but it is noticeably better.

My main problem (it's never bothered me too much) was the lack of overdrive (coasting) from 4th gear down (something we can't change). The shift down to 4th gear was always a bit jerkey for me. The effect is more muted now and I'm so glad I went in to get my adaptive data zapped. I'll admit, when I first got the car, I drove it rather vigorously which could explain the prior programming, but I'll never know.

Things I learned:

a) It took about three weeks for everything to get back to normal.

b) I tried telling my trans that I wanted to coast by putting it into neutral during coasting situations... there was no immediate or gradual effect that I could tell. Though my end result was positive, I'm not sure if putting into neutral contributed to the result.

c) The decel jerkiness changed on me suddenly. While reprogramming the adaptive data, the jerkiness was there one minute, and then it vanished. It didn't happen gradually. Strange.

d) When reprogramming the accel, I would engage cruise @ 45mph going into a stop signal. I would then brake into the intersection. When the light turned green, I pressed "RES" and let the car smoothly accelerate me back to 45. I figured the transmission itself would know the smoothest shift points so I let it program itself. Very meta, I know.

e) Was it all worth it? Yes... at the very least, I learned a ton about my car. In addition, I got a slight improvement in smoothness.

I hope this helps some of you.

You had to use your car for three weeks in order for it to re-learn how to shift and drive. I wonder if the tech had done TSB 09-AT-009. would that have made the transmission function correctly, without you having to drive it for three weeks to re-learn?
