  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

97k miles on my 2011 4.6 with tech pkg. and its been near perfect. Still has the original brake pads. Very low cost maintenance as compared to the two Mercedes that I also currently own. You should check the reliability and owner's reviews on Edmunds, MSN autos and Consumer Reports. However, since you have owned 40 cars in like 30 years its looks like you do not stay satisfied with any car for very long(150k miles or more and/or 7+years)

My 2012 has not been a very good car to be honest. The electronics aren't very good and I've had mechanical issues as well. I'm never owned a car that spent as much time in the shop with less than 30K miles driven. At the moment my driver's side power window controls only work intermittently. If you really need reliability and dependability proceed with caution. I rate Hyundai quality on a par with Chevy and that's not saying much.

There is some good news. I love the styling and enjoy being asked "What is that". I also enjoy people asking me how I like my Bentley. Getting in and out of the car is fairly easy for a car that sits pretty low to the ground. Fuel economy is very good for this size car and for a powerful V6 engine. The overall value, if you stay out of the shop, is excellent. You should also note a lot of people here don't have problems. I can also tell you there are a lot of unhappy Bimmer owners out there too.

You'll have to read the forum and decide for yourself.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I have not read or experienced anything like what you describe. Granted, I have had my car for only about a year and 12K miles so far. But my father-in-law has had a 2010 for more than three years.

I would rate quality way ahead of any comparable European car. Audi 6, BMW 5, and the Mercedes E will have way more hassles than the Genesis. It may not match Toyota, Nissan, and Honda, but it is also way more car. (So far, my first-hand data points come very close to Toyota, Nissan, and Honda on quality.)

If you like it, get the car. You will not be disappointed.

I have had my Genesis 3.8 (base) for 2 years now with >25k and zero problems. The only thing I had the dealer look at was the auto headlight sensor, which I thought turned on the headlights when I thought was a little too dark.
I have owned many cars over the years, some were great cars in my estimation others were junk.
I was raised on American built cars, GM’s and Fords.
Back in the fifties these companies built great cars, but starting in the seventies the quality started to decline and I got screwed, blued and tattooed once too often by these companies so I started buying foreign made cars ever since.
I think the warrantee a company provides on its cars speaks volumes as to the effort they put in to provide a quality product.
Hyundai with its 5 year 60K bumper to bumper and 10 year 100K power train is a strong statement of the confidence they have for their product.
I don’t know if this hyperlink will work but here’s some information on the Genesis that you may find interesting: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/17/let-there-be-technology-whats-under-hyundais-new-genesis-seda/

Relying on a forum like this one to gauge reliability is risky, because people understandably come here to complain, as I have on occasion. Surveys such as those published by Consumer Reports and others are a better indication, although even they're self-reported. BTW, we also have two Sonatas in our family (2006 and 2009), and the latter has had more than its share of problems. Again, though, that's anecdotal experience.

At 34,000 miles, my 2012 R-Spec has been the most reliable car I have owned since my first car purchase in 1963. I agree with others that the comments on car forums don't accurately reflect the quality of a make or model.

"You pays your money and you takes your chances." There are plenty of people running away from quirky BMWs.

Overall, my 2009 has been very reliable, but I don't have the tech package so that cuts down on a lot of things other people have had problems with. I also have the V6, which at least in 2009 was a more seasoned design than the Tau V8 (which was new in 2009). I hated the early 2009 suspension, and changed it to 2010/2011 specs, but that is not a reliability issue.

But there have been two things reported by quite a few others that concern me greatly about the reliability of my car. I have not encountered these problems yet, but that may be because I have only driven it 42,000 miles and I only drive the car about 3 days per week, and a large proportion of the miles been on the highway (so not as much brake usage as is average).
  • Total failure of brakes, apparently caused by defective ABS system component.
  • Rear brake lights failing, apparently due to bad diode.

These are not run-of-the-mill ordinary problems or inconveniences, they are serious safety issues which Hyundai apparently does not want to address in advance until the problem actually shows up on each car. But by then, the consequences could be quite severe.

It has been well documented by Consumer Reports and others that most German cars are not particularly reliable and are very expensive to get fixed or even just have regular maintenance done on them. But people buy them anyway, so I guess that makes those brands more "prestigious" if people are willing to put up with those things (I am not one of those people).

Even more than German cars, no one has ever claimed in the past that Rolls Royce was reliable, although it has improved since being taken over by BMW and now having BMW drivetrains.

This is my single biggest issue! Really Hyundai??? Faulty brake systems???....the lawyers will have a field day shortly!!!

What kills me is that the Genesis is the best looking car on the road. Right there with the S-class..... just a stunning design!

I was a bit wary when I purchased, but have not looked back. I've owned my '10 Genesis since May 2010, and have not had an iota of problems. The car runs as smooth as the day I bought it, now accruing 34k+ miles. As Waveman states, there are some who come to complain and others come for real world "personal" experiences.

Like most things in life, there's always something better. Luckily, you get to make the choice of buying or not buying. Take the care for a test-drive and decide.

I'd bet my paycheck that you got extremely lucky with your 2008 BMW. I'd say there are more horror stories about BMW than there is about Hyundai.

I will agree as at 55K miles I have had no issues at all. I bought the car with 30K on it in Dec. 2011. Thought I might trade while it still has decent book value.

Heh, my Genesis has 10k miles on it and has had 2 major failures (both engine related, one which resulted in broken piston rings and an engine replacement/rebuild) and several smaller ones (rear sunshade falling apart, noisy wipers, pinched wiring that cause no interior lights to work, and jiggling low beams). In the 1st 3 weeks that I had the car it spend 14 days in the dealership.

And it's still more reliable than my Subaru.

Bottom line is that I will still roll the dice and be trading in to a G soon as the bug has bitten already:)

From my personal experience - if you are looking for reliability first and foremost then buy an Avalon. I ran my 2000 for 100K miles with a total of just over $2000 in maintenance (the 90K service) and not a single repair or failure of any kind.

Only problem was....I didn't like driving it. With the steering wheel in a comfy position it completely hid the dash speedo and gauges. The driver's seat was not comfortable when driving over a couple hours. And the suspension was too soft. One reason I bought the Rspec was to remedy those issues, and it has.

Too soon to say if the Genny will replicate the Toyota's reliability but I sure like driving it a lot more.

BTW, the German marques are known for killing you with maintenance costs but to be fair most people drive them harder as well. I was temped with the Bimmer but went with the Hyundai instead and haven't been disappointed.

The Avalon was given to my daughter who is still driving it with over 130K miles on the clock and it has had exactly one repair - a leaky gasket.

So after my Mom having a 2006 Sonata for several years that was one of the finest automobiles I had ever seen....I have the Genesis in my sights....for a long time now. My issue? All the BS quality issues that the model seems to have. When I read the posts on the Genesis it reminds me of the GM / Delco POS cars that made the American car reputation what it has been until recent days. My 2008 BMW 335i is the best car I have ever owned in the 40 or so cars I have owned. So with all of the awesome progress that Hyundai has made in the last 20 years.....WTF is with the Genesis? I want the car...period!!!, but I do not want a POS that is a constant aggravation / safety concern.

PS- Anyone paying anywhere near the BS MSRP prices are throwing cash away. Off lease 2013 base models can be purchased for around 22K with low miles. You dealers can KMA:cool:

Considering the acronym used in the title for this thread, I hope you stay with BMW's. I think they may fit your personality better.
