Burning Rubber Smell..

We just towed our 2012 Genny 2,000 miles across the country on a U-haul tow trailer/carrier (NOT a dolly). Last Thursday (7th) a few hours before we put in on the trailer, we had the Nav update done as well as an oil change at our local dealer in Sierra Vista, AZ. From the dealer we drove it 2 miles to the U-haul dealer and loaded it up on the carrier and got the trailer hooked up to the truck.

Tues night at U-haul we got the Genny off the trailer. Started it up, backed it off, and not too long after startup, it started smelling like burning rubber. Checked under the hood and serpentine belt looked free and clear, and no noise. But the smell persisted. Drove it home. Yesterday morning, drive it a couple of miles, smells bad. Parked it as we had movers unloading our stuff.

This morning, 28 deg, started up to let it warm up. I was checking tire pressure and on the right front side, as I was bending down, I could smell burning rubber again. Not the smell of burning oil. Burning rubber. Called local Hyundai service here in Columbus (Ricart), he said to call Hyundai Roadside Assistance as he didn't want us to take any chances. Called Hyundai and they had a carrier out to us in 30 minutes (we're about 15 miles from the dealer). So they have he car tonite and tomorrow and we'll know more. Hopefully it's not serious. :confused:
 
Excuse my ignorance, but I have no idea about the difference between a dolly vs tow trailer/carrier. Can you explain? Were any of the wheels touching the road when it was being hauled?

I understand your frustration at not knowing..but for what it's worth..
A trailer is where the vehicle is actually driven onto the trailer and subsequently
Strapped Down.. All the road wheels are on the trailer.......
A Dolly is where the Two front wheels are typically on a small metal frame suspended between two wheels.. This way the rear wheels are in contact with the road and therefore the vehicle should be in Neutral (Genesis RWD)
Another way is a *Tow Hitch where All 4 wheels are in contact with the Road,
*NOT All vehicles can be towed in this way.. ;)

You might want to have dealership check all around exhaust system. It's possible that some road debris was thrown from the back of your U-haul truck and lodged around exhaust areas. Not likely, but, worth a look.

There is this thing called the INTERNET and on it there is a great wealth of information. I'm even willing to bet that there is info on the two types of vehicle transporters mentioned in the above post. Besides common sense of course, in the name of the two different types of equipment one a dolly the other a trailer.......it is pretty self explanatory...... if you just think about it.

I prefer to get accurate information (as to whether any of the Genesis wheels were touching the ground when the car was being transported) directly from the OP, in order to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding. Having that information avoids any discussion about whether it is called dolly, trailer, carrier, caddy, etc.
 
2 wheel tow vs 4 wheel tow is the diff

OP - not sure what the burning rubber smell might be? Interested.
 
Addendum:

On some vehicles the Prop Shaft HAS to be removed Prior to Towing..

Yea, all four wheels off the ground - waiting for call from service dept at Ricart on Hamilton Rd. in Columbus. Yea we saw plenty of 'road gators' and I suppose it's possible for a chunk of road rubber to get up there, but I saw nothing... I pulled the engine cover and revealed the glory of Darth Vader without his helmet and saw nothing out of the ordinary.....

Just got a call from Ricart - they have examined it this morning and last night and were unable to pinpoint a cause - there are no leaks etc and they are gonna put it back up in the air and look closer as maybe a plastic bag, etc may have gotten lodged up there. SO far nothing major and it does not appear to be oil or electrical.

The OP was pretty clear that his car was up off the road on a trailer. "NOT a dolly," as he said.

I am not really into trailers, trailer parks, etc.
