  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

5.0 engine ticking sound at idle??? w/ video

Service advisor then sent email request to Hyundai corporate to for NEW engine. Request has been APPROVED by Hyundai corporate (less than 24hr. response). My new engine is arriving Tuesday and vehicle should be done by Thursday.

I'm glad Hyundai honored their warranty promise and quick response to getting problem remedied. Fingers crossed that all will be fixed and running properly.

If everything turns out OK, probably worth mentioning the dealer by name, sounds like they deserve it.

UPDATE 5/7/2015........NEW engine coming!!!!

I got a call from dealership service advisor yesterday that the mechanic changed out the hydraulic lifters. Then while also changing the oil. Discovered metal shavings in oil. Service advisor described metal as large enough to warrant engine replacement. He also took pictures of metal shaving to show me later. Dealership could not determine where shavings came from. I guess there was some catastrophic engine failure. Per the service department, it is better to replace the engine rather than try to diagnose problem. I would not have settled for fixing or getting a "rebuilt" engine, etc.

Further update will come when I receive vehicle. BTW...dealership has been paying for my rental car since beginning of this issue(going to be 2 weeks plus). I guess they want to keep customers happy.

This is great news. For one, your dealer is to be congratulated for taking the time to thoroughly investigate and find the metal shavings and for two, Hyundai for backing up their warranty. Excellent news for you and all of us who owns a Hyundai.

UPDATE 5/12/2015....Picked up car...finally!!!!

I picked up my car yesterday! Three days earlier than expected. I now have a new engine that "purrs and sounds smoother and quieter". With my new engine I do notice a slight deep growl sound at about 2000rpm's while accelerating. It only lasts a half second. It could be the intake sucking in air that I didn't notice with the old engine. This gives the car a nicer more authoritative sound! Does anyone have a similar growl sound? I will have to drive for a week and follow-up. Besides that, the cars seem a little more solid and accelerates quickly.

Thanks Hyundai for honoring their warranty. Thanks to Roseville Hyundai of California, service advisor and mechanic for the professional service! I will bring my car back for future services.

FYI.......cost for engine replacement under warranty is $18000.00 Without warranty about $25000.00 parts/labor!!!!! My cost was ZERO. I guess deaership had to be compensated for work done. Old engine will be sent to Hyundai Corporate to analyze. Probably a manufacturing defect directly from factory.

My engine has that growl and it didn't show up until around 1500 miles or so. Congrats on getting the car back. Keep us posted how your journey forward goes.

Congrats.

This is definitely great news and I'm glad to hear Hyundai has a very happy customer in you...

My 2015 5.0 is starting to make similar noises. Started about 1 month ago - getting worse. Hearing about getting a whole new engine makes me nervous. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow. Here's a video that I took today.

As far as I can tell, it hasn't used any oil. Only 6200 miles on the car now. Oil was changed by the dealer at about 3000 miles and oil in there now still looks nice and clean with good levels.

FYI I had to have a new engine in a new 1989 Mazda 929 which had about 6000 miles on it. After the new engine I never had another problem.

The parents of my then-girlfriend had one of those when they first came out. I liked that car back then.

Just got back from the dealer. They've put in a request to Hyundai to have the engine replaced. Should hear back tomorrow if approved. Everyone joked with me about Hyundai old reputation for poor quality when I bought this car - I hope this is not indicative of what I can look forward to for the next several years.

Wow so this is the second or third V8 car that is getting a new engine on these forums? Costly for Hyundai that is for sure. Wonder if this is a rod knock or something like the Sonata had a couple years ago.

Good that they are replacing under warranty but this does not inspire a lot of confidence. I'm like you I had a lot of people give me grief about buying a Hyundai after owning Lexus only for 12+ years. Then when my car was recently in the shop for 12 days with an electrical problem all I heard was "dude what's up with your car"--got tired of that real quick.

So they ordered the full long block (basically complete engine). Should arrive next week and hopefully take 2-3 days to install and test per the advisor. I hope the car will be good as new after that. I always worry that with things being basically completely disassembled that it won't go back as well as the factory production. Major surgery on a new car is never a good thing. Keep your fingers crossed.

Does anyone know if this goes down on a record anywhere - carfax, etc? Seems like it would be bad for resale when the car has had a full engine replacement.

Your car will purr like a new tiger when you get her back. After my engine replacement. Car ran better than new! The engine replacement will not be noted on carfax but Hyungai will have a record of it in their system. Any other questions message me.

Stanmanh - thanks for the info. I hope everything works out as well as it did for you.

Got my car back a couple days ago. Seems good as new now. I could be mistaken but it feels torquier than before. Maybe the failed engine was down on power too in addition to the awful knocking noise. Of course, there was a two week period where I was just driving the loaner 4 cyl sonata so maybe I just forgot what it feels like. I've been driving around like a grandma though - some strange fear that if I push to hard the engine will fail again. Just need to regain confidence in the car I guess.

I ditto the same thoughts when I got my car back. You''ll feel confident in a weeks driving. I just got my first ticket in the car in July. 92 mph in. 70 zone!

Anyone know how much an engine replacement costs w/out warranty? Have a 2012 5.0 and it's has a rod knocking like noise coming but it seems to be coming from the drivers side cylinder head. Car has 67,000 miles and I purchased it from a private seller and am assuming powertrain warranty is not transferable? Just trying to prepare for the worst.
