  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

On March 24th 2016,
I was on the far left lane of a major highway (417 of Ottawa Canada), when another driver merged into the lane to my right and lost control (it had just snowed heavily) i swerved to avoid a collision, the other driver regained control and went back into their respective lane... i unfortunately hit the slush/snow to my left as i maneuvered to avoid a collision, and lost control of my vehicle. I ended up over correcting left and right and eventually slid into the guard rail at aprox. 80km/h or so. Curtain and chair bags deployed on the driver side...

I was deemed at fault as the other drive did not make contact. no injuries were sustained.

The insurance adjuster called and told me the damaged amounted to "just under $20 000" and deemed it a total loss.

attached are pictures i took that day, i live 150km from where my car currently sits in a collision center, so my pictures were just quick ones.

Geez! Glad you made it out okay, right? How fast were you going? Usually when the airbags are deployed, insurance companies deem it a total loss...:(

Sorry to hear that but glad you are okay. Unfortunately depreciation hits us hard and that certainly contributes to the decision to total the car.

On a positive note you could replacement it with a 15 or 16 and get a great deal or move on to another automotive experience.

At the time only 90km/h. The damage didn't look bad at all, guess it was the way i slid into the rail.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I am curious what percentage of the value of the car your insurance company used as the basis for totaling it. Many states are 70% while others are much lower at 50%.

Unless i find a spectacular deal, its definitely onto another automotive experience.

I will see if i can see a break down of the decision, but i believe it goes by Street value minus what the junk yard would pay for the car (used for parts) and then what ever percentage before deeming a loss... and if i'm correct that gives us no headroom.

Last I checked, Canada is "a whole 'nother country."

The reason for the accident is that you put too many extras on your car.

It reminds me back when I went to Costco and bought a 4-year supply of toilet paper, paper towels for kitchen, laundry soap, dishwasher soap, etc. A few weeks later I was transferred by my employer to another city.

Add-ons:
Genesis SmartKey Card, 35% Tint, Mud Guards, Hyundai All-Weather Mats, K&N Air Filter, Cargo Net, Spare Wheel Organizer, Rear Wing Logo, Pro-Clip Console Mount

It's bad karma, man.

Howdy neighbour.

I remember that day, a lot of freezing rain and ice pellets.

I feel for you, more than a few times I've been caught between a car and the guardrail on the 417 and there's nothing you can do but hope for the best.

I guess the bright side is you can pick up a 2016 now.

$20,000 in damage is very easy to do these days. I know of an incident where some lawnmower gas was spilled in the back of a Toyota RAV4 and "totaled" it. How? Toyota sells new rear seats for $8,000 from their parts department. Insurance companies are risk averse. So rather than deal with loss of value claims they will write you a lowball check, then raise everyone's rates to cover it.

First of all I'm glad to hear you're okay. That must have been pretty scary for a minute there.

Secondly, complicating your decision, I believe there are incredible deals out there as Hyundai seeks to clear out the Hyundai Genesis inventory so they can start selling Genesis G80s. :D

However I do understand the sentiment to move in a different direction, and I can certainly express that. Please keep us informed about what you end up getting.

Cheers!

almost got in an accident on Wednesday a few miles down the road.. An elderly person not looking goes right through a stop sign and i literally missed him by inches causing the right side of the vehicle to merge into the grass.. needless to say i was pretty pissed..

Glad that you and the car are OK.

This is why I installed a dash cam in my car. Too many people who have no business driving on public roads, drunk, distracted or simply incapable of handing close to two tons of metal on the road.

I passed a guy on my way to work today on the local toll road, doing barely 60 in the fast lane of 75 mph road, the right two lanes empty - he was playing on his phone. I passed him slowly on the right, took about 10 seconds and he never looked up from the screen onto the road, even when I honked my horn at him several times (yeah, I do that).

Using your phone while driving (except hands-free to be on a call) should be a $300 ticket first time you get caught, and double each following time - $600, then $1200, etc.

I can't wait for self driving cars - so idiots like that don't affect others while driving.

Make sure you hug your loved ones tonight and tell them you care about them - you never know when some idiot hits you out of the blue.

Wow that sucks. Are they giving you replacement value or fair market value? If the latter mind sharing?

its funny you say that because that's the first thing that came to mind when this happened.. The dash cams can be picked up fairly cheap nowadays...
