  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Battery discharged for no apparent reason

I just bought two of these Lithium battery boosters for my cars - looks like a good thing to have in the trunk.

Lighter than jumper cables & very user friendly. Easily charged with a little 5.0 V. "cube" charger, or the 12 V. outlet(s) in your car.

Amazon sells them for about $100 per each.

I'm not too car savvy, but I've read if you lock the doors that shuts down the on-board computers and helps not discharging the battery.

Any truth to that?

No way - the on board computer draws current along with the clock(s), radio, and all the other little gadgets. On older cars, the "parasitic current drain" was 30-50 milliamps - probably more now.

If you lock your doors - you may succeed in locking your doors - that's about it.

As the OP, I should report that I've had no problems since the original incident. The only thing I might have done differently was to push the trunk-close button, and then press the trunk-close-door-lock button as the trunk was closing. Perhaps this interfered with the shutdown procedure.

It is a glitch in the start/stop switch. Mine did the exact same thing and battery was dead in the morning. Several new car manufacturers are having this same intermittent problem with the switch not shutting down everything when it is turned off and it drains the battery overnight. FYI.

I'm reading the thread since my battery in my 2015 5.0 ultimate simply went dead over night. It is 2 years 2 months old, and battery warranty is for only 2 years. I got it to jump start when the road side wrecker came. We tried his power pack 1st and it would not start it, so we jumped it off the wrecker engine and it was no problem starting.

Dealer has it, and decided to put in new battery, but that is $400, gulp. The battery is ordered so not back yet. I hope the dealer can help me on the battery since it was only 2months out of warranty and there was no indication of the battery being low or weak. Will see next week. I have a 2017 new G80 loaner 3.8L which is a base model, but I do like the new tires that are not staggered, and they are not the super low profile, and it is way lighter than the 2015 5.0 Ultimate. Regards.

Why pay $400? Autozone has the Duralast Platinum (AGM) with 3 years warranty for $183.99 and the Duralast Gold with 5 years warranty for $149.99

I agree with you regarding getting a battery somewhere else. Once I woke up that I may have to pay for new battery, I called service rep I always use (as I have posted here previously my dealership is great about taking care of their customers - Parkway Hyundai). Chris Dean - sales rep, advised battery would be in Monday, and they would cover it. They always warn what the cost will to be, but they always end up covering it. Same with a blow tire etc. Really good dealership and service rep. So, as usual I am a happy camper -- reason I have stayed with Hyundai.

That's good to hear. Congrats to your dealer.

Just happened to my Genesis :( Waiting for the roadside assistance. Battery is 2 month old, if the dealer did not lie when i got the car..

Considering that most people are happy with their AGM batteries on vehicles from other manufacturers, I will guess that Genesis owners got screwed.

It's been starting up fine so far. Right now I think a computer or sensor glitch in the shutdown procedure left something on. If it happens again, I'll suspect a flaky battery.

Until somebody comes up with a substantive, factual reason for all these wacko battery failures, I'll continue to carry one of the new compact, lithium-ion jump starters in the trunk.

I agree, there seems to be no established reason for a flat battery and it is extremely hard on a starting battery. Drawing them down to a voltage below 10.5v will drastically reduce their life expectancy to about 20% of normal.

Update. As I am working out of town, I was able to walk my wife through the jump starting procedure (Facetime) using our other vehicle. No luck, though she was home alone and no one was available to rev the engine in the boost vehicle.

She definitely can't change out a battery by herself. Wish I was there with my voltmeter.

She gets back later tonight from our daughters school function, I will have her try a service manual check (gear position switch) Maybe it isn't fully in park. -Thanks again to Doug! Quite timely in receiving that service manual.

Failing that, or a proper jump start, looks like the Genesis may be towed to the dealer.

Will update.

Update! She shifted it though the gears, placed it back into Park.... and it started. Ha! Thanks again Doug!!!

As the OP, I have had no other problems after the original incident. In my mind, this clears the battery of any blame along with switch hardware. I'm guessing a computer glitched and left something on.

I parked and locked my Genesis last night at 9:30 PM and when I tried to unlock 13 hours later, nothing happened. I popped off the lock cover and manually opened the door and hood. The battery was down to 5.5 V. I checked the headlight switch and it was on automatic. After charging for an hour, the car restarted properly five times while running errands.

Batteries can intermittently die from the FL heat, but I have to wonder if something else malfunctioned and drained the battery. Any ideas?

To run an AGM battery down to 5.5VDC in 13 hours requires a rather obvious and severe load, like headlamps or the horn. I am amazed that the battery took a charge and still lives.
I was lucky, the dealer had the vehicle in stock for a while and had to deal with the replacement battery before I ever saw the car. From what you are saying, there appears to be two problems, bad AGM batteries (like some BMWs and other Equus/Genesis vehicles), and some kind of electrical problem.

I am extremely curious about this, sorry. Where did you measure the voltage?

One may not be enough. I ran mine down by accidentally leaving the driver's door cracked open for 3+ days (in my garage). It would not crank with a single jump starter hooked to the battery or to the terminals up front. It did start with two jump starters, one on the battery and one in the front. I think there are a lot of electronics that have to power up and these don't leave enough power left over for cranking with a single jump starter.

I'm also experiencing this exact same problem. Has no one identified the problem, nor a solution? My car has been at the dealer now for 10 days, with no end in sight! I'm using a loaner that's passable, but it's not my black batmobile! :wallbash:

I think that is a safe conclusion due to the volume of SDS cases.

*** SDS => sudden death syndrome

Could be a pervasive electrical problem in the 2G Genesis.
