  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just purchased a 2013 Genesis 5.0 R-Spec. I'm still learning about all the bells & whistles in this great car. There is one feature I can't find explained in the manuals - ECO Driving Mode.

Page 4-58 of the Owner's Manual explains how to turn ECO mode ON/OFF but not much more than that.

What is ECO mode and how does it work? Does it alter the operating parameters of the engine and/or transmission?

I'd appreciate if someone could explain this feature for me.

THANKS

Unless something has changed for 2013, activating the Eco light simply engages the circuit which tells you if you're driving economically. It doesn't actually change how the car operates at all.

That's my understanding as well. The entire Eco mode consists of an idiot light you can choose to turn on or off.

Well, if that's all it does, I'll just turn the darn thing OFF. I didn't buy this car for it's economy features.

Thanks for your help.

One more really stupid thing about Eco mode. In my 2012 V6, when I have the instantaneous gas mileage displayed on the instrument cluster, the Eco light permanently turns off. It turns back on again if I change the instrument cluster display to anything else.

Since it apparently does nothing ....

ECO MODE CHALLENGE*:

Turn Eco mode 'on'. Keep the indicator off by driving ;)

I just stumbled across this info in the FAQs section of the MyHyundai website:

What is Active ECO and how does it work?
The Active ECO button allows your vehicle to perform at the optimal level to receive maximum fuel efficiency by controlling the vehicle’s shifting patterns. The system is activated by the Active ECO button located by the driver’s left knee.

Is my vehicle less powerful when it is in Active ECO mode?
The Active ECO system modifies engine and transmission control specifically for improved fuel economy. The vehicle may not accelerate as fast when it is in Active Eco mode because it is operating at a level specifically intended to lower the fuel consumption rate. For best vehicle performance and drivability, turn your vehicle’s Active ECO off.

I'm not sure I understand all this. When my ECO light is on, it will turn itself off if my right foot gets a little heavy and then pop back on when I ease back on the throttle. This seems counter to the above statements. And, my Genny has no button by my left knee making me think we're talking about two altogether different vihicles.

I only remember this in the sonatas, but i am pretty sure i have seen it in the santa fe's too

In wish my iPhone had an active ECO mode.

I just bought at 2015 Genesis 5.0 sedan and one of the first things I was shown was the ECO Driving Mode so, yes, the sedan has that feature. This is an enlightening post, I agree that if it does nothing, why have it at all. "Shows you if you're driving economically" is stupid. We all know when we're driving economically or not.
I do have a question for all of you: I'm supposed to be getting 18-20 mpg but in the now 11 days I've had this car, I've gone from 11 mpg to 13 (and I've had to fill the tank!).
Is this the normal mpg or should I have it checked?
Thanks

Mileage may vary. When I'm driving for 2 mile trips, my mileage drops to 14-15, but when driving for 5 mile trips, or in the city it goes to 18-19. On the highway, I get 28-30. I have a V6, so your mileage will be less......PS... The 13 and the 15 are two completely different cars.

RealtyGal,

This is an old thread and the Genesis has changed a lot. ECO mode does change the transmission shifting. It does up shifts sooner to keep engine RPM lower and may even reduce engine power to some extent. It mostly helps in town and very little if at all in hwy driving. It also has a SNOW mode which reduces power quite a bit. Now this is for my 3.8 but I believe it applies to your 5.0 also.

I assume you are talking about the 2015/16 5.0 noted and well broken in.
ECO mode does actually do something. I don't know how much because I've never driven any long amount of time using it. It detracts from performance so I'm willing to give up some economy for better acceleration. The gas pedal gets a little less responsive, shift points are changed, the exhilaration of getting on the highway ramp is diminished.

Your definition of traffic and no traffic may be much different than mine but your figures are lower than mine. Genesis, especially the V8 is not an economical city car. Around town I'm always under 15 but on the highway, always over 25. Took a few thousand miles for it to reach full potential too.

This thread is in the 09-14' Sedan section, so lets not get people confused with what the 15'+ has.

I just find it funny anyone would purchase a 4200lb boat with 5 litre V8 and give a single shit about an "eco" driving mode button lol.

Even though the poster with the complaint says they owns a 2G?

OP has a 1st gen, so.. yeah? It got turned from what the ECO mode on the 1st Gen does, to what it does on the 2nd gen. As stated, the 1st gen mode doesn't actually do anything but turn on a light, so it's easy to confuse things by also talking about the 2nd gen which does have an eco mode that does something. This thread isn't about the 2g's
