In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. 2015 Genesis 5.0 sedan, CPO, 29k miles, purchased 7/25/18. I bought this specific model because I wanted to use CarPlay. I just want to be clear about that from the outset, that it was one of the major reasons I bought this vehicle.

Anyway, all of the trouble started out as a CarPlay issue. It would disconnect from my iPhone 6+ randomly and I'd get a "connection canceled" notice. Sometimes all this would require was for me to unplug the phone once and plug it back in, and then it would work again. Other times, however, it would require connecting and reconnecting multiple times until it would actually boot up CarPlay. In some instances, nothing I did would work. It would say "reading USB" and pop the CarPlay logo on the screen and then it would vanish. This issue would usually resolve itself after the car sat for a period of time, and CarPlay would continue to work without issue for several days, then it would act up again. I tried three or four different cables, including a brand new official Apple lightning cable, and that would not rectify it. I do know the USB port was getting juice because the battery logo would turn green indicating it was charging.

At first I suspected the phone. My 6+ was acting sluggish so I decided to try my girlfriend's iPhone 8. It worked fine. I tried my friend's iPhone 6 and it worked as well. On Friday, after CarPlay started acting up again, I bought a brand new iPhone Xs Max. That worked fine. Until today.

This morning, I plugged the phone in as usual on my short drive to my office. No problems. I then came back to the car a few hours later for a drive across town. It worked fine. On my way back, though, it inexplicably disconnected itself. Unplugged it, plugged it back in, and CarPlay would show up on the screen and then suddenly vanish. Eventually I got it to work, but anytime I would launch an app (maps or Apple music, or even the phone), CarPlay would crash and disconnect the phone. I did notice it was taking a while for the phone to register that it was charging, too, maybe 10-15 seconds after it was plugged in. I drove to lunch then home and grabbed yet another cable plus my old iPhone. I plugged the new cable into the USB port and noticed it wasn't charging at all. So I tried my 6+. Nothing. My girlfriend works across the street and I asked her to bring her phone by. Her phone didn't register, either. I borrowed my business partner's 6s and same thing. I tried all 4 iPhones with 3 different lightning cables. I cycled the nav system to turn off CarPlay and then back on. Nothing, seems the USB port is dead.

I took it down to the local Hyundai dealer and they told me I might require a new head unit. You have to be kidding me, right? Can't the port just be fixed? I was also told the head unit might not be covered since the vehicle has been in service for a little over three years. I know I'm speculating here and probably working myself up but, if that's the case, the whole notion is absolutely outrageous.

Will the usb port recognize a standard usb drive and play music from it? If so then it may be corrupted software in the headunit which may have been caused by corrupted files in your phone.

That’s a good idea. I will try that and report back.

EDIT: Tried two different usb drives - neither of them work in the port.

Tried a radio reset. That did not help. Really wish I could get behind the socket to take a look.

Probably apple's planned obsolescence first its the battery then usb and car play stops working and force you go upgrade to a shiny new iPhone XS Max.

That was a joke, when you plugged in the USB sticks did you have music on them? Also with USB they one work when formatted with FAT32 I believe. so if usb is anything but that file format the USB reader wont read it.

I appreciated the joke, it's not far from the truth.

As for your other question, yes I did.

CarPlay (i.e., the USB port) inexplicably began working again a few minutes ago. That's after about 24hrs of it being dead as a doornail. So I am now going with the theory there is either a loose connector behind it somewhere or the female connector is wonky. Nice to see Waze though.

Nice, its one of those hard to replace parts at the dealership warranty because they will never be able to reproduce it while they have it. but luckily I think its like 28 bucks or so for the usb port on myhyundaiparts.com.

I took it down there yesterday when it started giving me trouble, the service CSR saw it himself - they're around the corner from me, thankfully.

Oh nice, well keep pushing till they replaced it.

I'm using a USB to play my music and lately it's been acting flaky. Usually it just continues playing from where it stopped when I was last in the car, but now when I start the car sometimes it doesn't recognize the USB. I have to remove it and plug it right back in and then it will continue playing from the last point. On a few occasions when I did that it started playing from the very first file on the USB instead of going back to where it last played.

After 8 months & many service visits (since I bought it) selling dealer yesterday replaced my USB Port too after replacing the Head unit 2 months ago. My issue was old IPOD Nano was not playing or charging intermittantly sometime for weeks @ a time then would work. Seems fine now.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

Are you plugging and unplugging the port in the car? Or leaving a cord plugged in all the time and plugging the phone? I leave a cord plugged in the car all the time and just plug the phone

Just an update.

When they replaced the fuel control module last week, somehow they inadvertently reset the USB port and it was working flawlessly until yesterday when it disconnected itself briefly and I had to plug it in again. This morning, however, it was being its old ornery self and would work for about 20 seconds and then completely disconnect. I'd unplug/replug and it simply refuses to work for very long.

The dealership is down the street from me so I took it in and let the service advisor look at it. He used his own iPhone and cable and it was completely dead for him. No power going to the port, nothing. They scheduled an appointment for me tomorrow morning. I have rented another car for the second time in a week because they have no loaners.

I was reminded that, since I have a 2015, if it is the head unit that is the issue - it would NOT be covered. That is unacceptable to me.

After less than three months of ownership, I am looking on Autotrader for a a new car in case they tell me I have to replace the head unit at my cost. I'll dump it for another brand from some other dealership (Mercedes BMW or something) and not look back. CarPlay is the main reason I bought this thing and I have no patience for this. Beautiful car, nearly flawless with low mileage, what a shame.

I guess I will report back tomorrow.

Dang, that sucks man. Keep us updated, so the 2015 headunit is only 3 year warranty or something?

Yes that is correct.

It was in the shop for two days this week with them trying to sort the problem out. No joy. They reinstalled the CarPlay software and did so at no charge but that didn’t fix it. Hyundai is stumped. I’m willing to bet they’re going to have to replace the HU.

UPDATE:

Back in the shop AGAIN today over this issue. They reinstalled CP software last week and it worked for about 20 minutes before it started dropping the connection. It does charge the phone reliably but the system does not like CP at all. Hyundai's tech engineers wanted to know what carrier I'm using, but since I've tried multiple phones with multiple carriers, it doesn't really matter.

iPhones tried:

iPhone 6 on Verizon using iOS 11.4.1
iPhone 6+ on T-Mobile using both iOS 11.4.1 and iOS 12
iPhone 8 on T-Mobile using iOS 11.4.1
iPhone X on AT&T using iOS 12
iPhone Xs Max on T-Mobile using iOS 12

I've tried turning off the phone's bluetooth but that doesn't help. Have tried 5 different cables, including two official Apple cables (and a fresh one out of the Xs Max box).

So, if they cannot figure it out, then I am not sure where to go from here.

They have a brand new black G80 sport down there, maybe just trading it for that is the solution? I really don't know right now.

Can someone rename the thread "AppleCar Play Not Working"?

The verdict so far is that it's the USB controller. It's a $440 repair out the door. I had them order the part and it'll be installed on Tuesday. Will report back.
