  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Driving down the interstate a huge chunk of ice came off the car ahead of me and cracked my grill and the clear plastic piece above the license plate. Also the AEB warning light and amber triangle appeared on the dash along with chimes. My Hyundai dealer doesn’t have a body shop so took it to a Toyota body shop. The warnings and alerts come on randomly, sunny days with no one in front of me. Had the grill, bumper cover and plastic replaced. Still comes on and Toyota checked and found nothing wrong. Called my dealer and he said since it’s intermittent he may not be able to fix it. They will not replace the sensor unless they find a code saying it is. The odds of it coming on while turning into the dealership are not good. So what can I do? What if I had just bought the car? They would have to fix it or give me my money back under lemon law? Where is the sensor?

Sorry to disappoint you but the lemon law would not apply even if you bought the car that morning. They have no obligation to fix it. This is not a manufacturing defect, it is caused by ice that came from another car. You can go after his insurance or perhaps yours with a deductible.

I'd at least have the Hyundai/Genesis dealer check it out. They have more experience than a Toyota dealer with it. I have no idea of the testing procedure but it may be as simple as tapping on it to make it throw a code.

Yeah, it sucks, but your responsibility. Find the guy that didn't clean his car off as he is the one at fault.

I agree with Edp that this doesn't fall in the lemon low category. How ever the insurance company has the problem of your car being repaired fully. Call them.
I had a customer bring me his car (an older Buick, not a genesis) with everything electronic not working. The car had been hit by lightning. There was no visible damage, but there was a lot of invisible damage.
The insurance company said they could not pay for damage that was not visible. To them that was the end of the story. I sent them a 3 page letter explaining that electrical damage can not be seen by the inexperienced person. I had no problem seeing the damage. I suggested that they send there electronic expert to my shop, bring his scan tools, o-scopes, etc and he then could also see the damage. They replied that they had no electrical engineers. I said that is your problem, not your customers problem.
They paid for the repairs.

There is a code. Toyota just can't get to it, they don't have the tools needed.

The code lives forever once it sets. It might not be current but it will be enough.

Thanks. I have an appointment Wednesday.

Went to the dealer and an hour and a half later they found no codes, nothing wrong. Driving home the alarm, AEB light came on twice. Called them and they said to bring it back and they will give me a loaner while service manager would drive it for a couple days. My question is where is the radar sensor. Behind the bumper which a shop manual said or behind the clear plastic cover on the grill. I would like to get to it before I take it in to clean and also check rough alignment. I think they just used a code reader and didn’t physically check the sensor.

Please let us know what happens, mine has been acting up since I had the grille replaced. I assumed loose connector but it doesn't seem to be the case so I'm not sure what to ask them to check.

Doing a google search I found videos where going down a straight stretch of interstate in left lane it would slow down because of a car in the middle lane. I leaning towards alignment of the sensor. It has to be aligned horizontally and vertically within +/- 3 degrees.

I'll take a look for alignment issues. The front face seems flush with the grille itself. It tends to fail at rather random moments, and has never actuated unwantedly. It has operated once in a heavy traffic full stop scenario. I was already in full stop mode but it kicked in anyway (I don't object to it's decision to take over). Thus I know it works when not in alarm/disabled state. Only pattern I've found is it will go off line with a warning after 10 minutes of driving, and never sooner. It will often go off twice an hour, never lasting more than a mile but no other patterns that I can find.

Today I drove around 400 miles, mostly interstate. Mine seemed to alarm after braking, hitting a large bump and sometimes just going straight. I was getting AEB but mostly SCC and SCC conditions not met.

After 2 weeks at the dealership it's finally fixed. Went for a weekend trip before taking it in and my smart cruise control was not working with cars in front of me. Would drive right up on them with no braking. But it would see a tractor trailer. They found the AEB unit and the auto cruise assembly were bad. Took them a while to calibrate everything but, knock on wood, it seems to be fixed!

Good. Nice to know the dealer came through, finally.
