Undercoating / Rustproofing G70 - Canadian Winter

I'm wondering if anyone has had their G70 undercoated or plans to this fall?

I've always undercoated every vehicle I've owned and believe the process absolutely helps however the last couple vehicles I've purchased I haven't kept longer than 6 years and am debating the expense/merit of doing this.. There is of course that nagging conscience telling me to maintain the car to the best of my ability regardless.... etc. for the next owner.

Would love to hear opinions, people undercoating this car or similar 3 series, Mercedes, etc.

When I think of undercoating, I think of rustproofing - like drilling holes and spraying goo. Is that what you're talking about?

Yes, sorry. Rustproofing. I've used Krown before in the yearly applications as well as the "wax" like coating applied on a new vehicle and supposedly good for life. I've actually had surprising results with the lifetime coating and wouldn't hesitate to use it again although I always touched up a few times a year with a handspray rust protector.

Of course the application/shop that does it is everything.

Given that excessive corrosion is a certainty my concern is that being a fairly new car is there a shop capable of applying the rustproofing correctly. My second concern is should I even bother at this point assuming I sell the car in 6 years and simply take it to the carwash as much as possible in the winter (which i pretty much do anyways).

In the 70's everyone rustproofed their cars for good reason - cars rusted. By the time I bought my first Honda Accord around 1996, the owners manual actually said not to rustproof the car. The steel, and the way it's treated has eliminated the need. I have a 2007 Acura MDX that spent its life in W. Michigan. I has no rust on the body.

I think it depends on the manufacturer. The first gen Mazda3 which was built to 2008 had severe rust issues and was well known for it. I don't have plans to rustproof mine as PA winters are manageable and I work from home during bad weather days. Weekly undercarriage wash seems sufficient for me

Interesting to hear. The salesman Genesis Experience Manager also didn't promote rustproofing, specifically as the car is a demo with a few thousand km, and the process would be more detrimental than helpful.

I'm still adjusting to this fantastic way of buying cars.... where you don't get asked to pay for all this additional coating/protectants/rustproofing after you agree on price. I cannot stress enough how enjoyable the purchasing experience is compared to the industry standard.

Thanks for the reply. Out of the cars I've owned non of which are luxury or German brands I've seen a Jeep rust into oblivion (not suprising), and have coated my old Altima and current Ram since. I'm leaning towards the weekly undercarriage washes as well.

Turned out too, that not done correctly it actually increased the rust. Drilling was not good and some places that drained water would be blocked.

No way would I spend the money for it, especially if trading after 6 years. Especially since you have a 7 year perforation warranty (in US anyway)

The warranties seem better in the states. I believe the "anti-perforation" warranty in Canada is only 5 yr / unlimited km.

And that is the fear, regardless of how much it could "potentially" help if the application isn't done well is it worth the risk. Thanks for the replies, and the reminder on the warranty.

I also am thinking about rustproofing my 2015 ultimate with 90,000 km,the cost is only 100$cdn by metropolitain rust protection in montreal where salt is used on the streets a lot.I have used them many times before and always a great job.Just one question,with all the high tech gadgets is this a good idea.

I wouldn't think there would be any negative effect. Everything is sealed already for moisture so as long as they don't spray over something they shouldn't or drill into wires, you'll be fine.

I just go with the factory galvanize. Last car I had that rust proofing would have helped was my 10 year old Karmann Ghia. My Buick Regal had a spot starting after 15 years. Even Rust Jones closed up in 1988.

Location location location. Salted roads, salt spray from ocean and salt "fog" lol that will do it.

Personally I have never thought this to be worth it. Unless maybe you are planning on keeping the vehicle for 10 years. But in 4-5 years it won't be a benefit and my experience selling or trading in cars no one cares to pay extra if you had it.

I completely agree with the Fluid Film recommendation although it will NOT take 20 cans, maybe a couple. I've undercoated(rustproofed) many cars and this stuff is the best if you don't mind doing it once a year. Over 40 years in the biz and I have tried everything including the drill holes and spray wax (Ziebart) methods. Nothing works as well as Fluid Film, it's the real deal. Take it from someone fighting rust here in the buckle on the rust belt, New England. And now that they are spraying brine on roads which is like corrosive acid I recommend FF more strongly than ever.
I have used it on 7 of my vehicles and it will 100% stop rust from starting. If your car shows some rust then FF will stop it in it's tracks. Overspray is completely non-hazardous and wipes right off without harming whatever it got on. Actually Husky, I like the smell.

I love Fluid Film but it washes off with a pressure washer so just make sure you're not going through a pressurized undercarriage wash!

Yeah, I was exaggerating. I think two or three cans would probably do it. Cheap, safe and effective. I was told about this stuff by a friend last year and use it regularly now.
