  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

During my last few morning commutes I've experienced a weird malfunction with my car. I am guessing it's related to the collision avoidance system, but am not certain as to what is going on. What I have seen happen is the car suddenly slows down and there is a fast beeping indication to notify of something happening. This is odd as both times this has happened the road has been completely clear in front of me. This goes on a second or two and then the car returns to normal operation. I haven't seen any notifications pop up to tell me exactly what was going on either time.

The timing of this is very bad as my family intends to be travelling a good chunk of next week, starting with an out of town appointment tomorrow. I'll certainly need to have this diagnosed asap, the last thing I need is for this to happen and not go away, effectively immobilizing the car completely while we are travelling, or to have the car suddenly slow down for no reason and end up getting rear ended. I just had my windshield replaced recently, so perhaps the camera is malfunctioning intermittently.

Not sure where the sensor(s) are. If not the windshield...any other sensors obstructed?

From reading the manual the system uses a combination of the front radar sensor and cameras located behind the windshield. Neither looks appreciably dirty at the moment other than some light bug related debris, so it makes me wonder if either the camera or radar is malfunctioning. The manual does mention that bug splatters can cause issues though so I'll clean any debris off. I do see there is an option to deactivate this system, but I can't even say for certain that this is what is happening as I didn't notice any warning pop up on the dash to indicate that it was either a collision warning or emergency braking situation.

Sounds like this may be related to the adaptive cruise ECU. I think it's the same ECU responsible for collision avoidance and blind spot monitoring. Mine died in my car shortly after delivery. Genesis replaced it and all is good

What kind of symptoms did you see in yours that indicated an issue?

Sudden deceleration with cruise plus I think my blind spot monitoring was intermittent.

I have been using adaptive cruise control both times when this has popped up the last two mornings. How frequently did you run into issues with your car?

Frequently. Don't use your AAC anymore and get it fixed. You can turn off the AAC and use normal cruise

I'll definitely get it checked out asap. Hopefully it's not one of those hard to diagnose problems for the dealership as it's intermittent so far. I do suspect if I turn off both automatic collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control in the mean time at least the car won't be randomly slowing itself down for no reason.

Just to be clear, I believe there’s no such thing as automatic collision avoidance in the Genesis. I believe what you’re referring to is automatic emergency braking. You can hope that it is not one of those hard to diagnose problems but because it is intermittent and you are not getting any error messages, it is likely to be.

You didn't apply wax on the front sensor or on the cameras did you?
No I haven't waxed the cover for the radar sensor, and the cameras are hidden behind the windshield which is only about a week old.

There is indeed a system called forward collision avoidance assist, it's on page 5-81 of the owners manual. I'm hoping there is a log in the car ecu of activation of emergency braking situations, otherwise I fear that I'll be told that the technician is unable to recreate the issue.

The windshield is only a week old? Did this first start happening after you replaced the windshield?

Yeah, I never experienced this issue prior to having the windshield replaced. I first had the issue pop up yesterday in the morning on my drive to work, there were very few cars on the road at the time as it was a weekend and early, just after 6am. The same thing happened again this morning, same scenario, little traffic early in the morning.

I wonder if the stock windshield has some kind of AR coating where the camera is and the replacement one doesn't?

I wonder if there is a defective part that was installed as part of the procedure. On the invoice for the windshield replacement it shows replacement of some sort of module as part of the windshield replacement. They also charged $400 in labor charges which is pretty crazy, as normal windshield replacements are done in under an hour. There must be quite a bit of calibrations, testing etc. as part of these replacements.

Forward collision avoidance assist -Yes
Automatic collision avoidance - No, it does not automatically avoid collisions.
In my manual, which granted is not a G70 but I still believe pertains says the following:
Always drive cautiously to prevent unexpected and sud- den situations from occur- ring. AEB does not stop the vehicle completely and is not a collision avoidance system.

So who did the installation? Was it a Genesis dealer?

Also I would not pay much attention to the hours on the invoice. It’s likely to be some standard time not what was actually done.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to argue this but whatever. The warning in my manual states:

"The forward collision avoidance system may not always stop the vehicle completely." This would certainly lead you to believe that when it's operating completely as intended the car will be completely stopped in emergency conditions, would it not? Perhaps your G90 has a different system than the G70 does, that would help to explain any differences.

The replacement was done at an authorized Hyundai/Genesis service center here in Calgary.

I agree with you that this likely didn't take the full allotted time. I had a buddy who worked in dealerships as a mechanic, and they weren't paid by the hour, but rather by the book time allotted for various jobs. He would always try to load up on easy gravy jobs so that he could work an 8 hour day, but get paid for 15 hours of work. Some of these allotted book times are obviously ridiculous, super easy jobs like changing engine and interior air filters comes to mind.
