Genesis G70 Base Trim?

Hi, I'm considering getting the G70 2.0 base trim, mostly to save on the price -- looking thru the forums seems like almost everyone gets the higher trim. Does anyone here own the base trim? How do you like it? Any regrets in terms of not getting the higher trim model?
 
I drove one as a loaner during my service. It's not that bad but TBH I'd probably rather get a fully loaded Accord/Mazda 6 or maybe a stinger GT over a base G70 unless you get a killer deal on the base G70. The leatherette seats and halogen lights alone would make me want to skip it and at least get the elite trim. If you really only care about driving dynamics and can overlook the missing features, then the base G70 would be okay but then you can pay just a little bit more for a 6MT.

I drove a base model 2.0 as a loaner for the day as well, and I really found myself missing a lot of the convenience features of my 3.3 Sport. It has no heads up display (which is possibly my favorite tech feature I've ever experienced), no wireless charging pad for my phone, no 360 camera, far less attractive seating material, etc. etc. The exterior was missing Brembo brakes which greatly adds to the visual appeal to me. I really disliked the engine as well until I started to get a feel for where the power band resided. I'm a little hesistant to say it, but when you strip away a bunch of the luxury amenities and premium interior and exterior trim materials, the G70 to me started to feel more like a fancier Hyundai.
 
The sport 2.0t is good bang for your buck and not much more than the base. If you don't want the manual then you'd be able to find a demo of the prestige for less than the base. Or just end up test driving a 3.3t and you'll never consider the base again, problem solved. lol Speaking of Canada here, the same will happen in the states I'm sure once availability of the car pics up.

I'd get a Sonata Limited with lots of goodies before a base model of anything.

In three months time you'll be missing some of the goodies that others have and that the Sonata has. Why buy a luxury brand with no luxuries? Seriously, do a comparison of the two cars and see what will be more fun to drive long term.
 
I have the 2.0 Sport. I’d really miss the Lexicon sound system and Brembo brakes if I had to drive the base version instead. Those are definitely great upgrades. Not sure if the base has vented seats as well; if not, I’d miss those too. I’ve been spoiled this Summer with my first car with vented seats and I don’t want to go back to a car without them.
 
In my experience, it is usually best to get the best trim. Sure, it is more expensive, and doesn't make any financial sense... but if you were buying a car for strictly financial reasons, you'd buy a base Elantra and be done with it.

I have always regretted not getting the top level trim with all the features. This time, I didn't make that mistake.

(By the way, it hurts when a new model year adds a feature or two, because I want to have them.... but at least it wasn't my choice, so I live with it a little easier...)

First world problems, I suppose.

How was the leatherette seating? Is it a big step down from the real leather?

Thanks for the replies - I guess I should test them out in person to see how they compare. But I sometimes wonder whether the big price difference is really worth it!

What folks are saying is that it was worth it to them. No one else can say or tell you if it’s worth it to you.
 
^^ not sure where you are located, but in CAD the 2.0T Sport is only $3500 more than the base trim. this buys a ton of value, coming with all the Sport mechanical goodies (except the actual 3.3T engine), but also the Sport/LED appearance package and a bunch of the luxury items like Nappa stitched leather, Lexicon, pano sunroof, etc. it leaves out the Navi and some of the driving aids like distance cruise control.

the options are where a manufacturer make their margins. just look at pickup trucks! i'm always amazed that you can buy a $27k F-150...or drop $80k. sure there are lots of options added, but does anyone think those options actually come close to the $53k delta?

i've always leaned towards buying a better overall vehicle and skip some of the frilly options. if i'm gonna spend $40k, for example, i want that money to go towards the overall car and not gadgets and gizmos. those are what turn a $25k car into a $40k car. but a $40k car to start 'should' be a much more rewarding and refined driving experience assuming that money has gone into the chassis, drivetrain, etc.

in CAD, you can spend $47k on a loaded up Maxima or buy an AWD Q50 Sport with a proper RWD configuration and balance. if it were my money, and i actually liked the Q50, i'd lean that way every time.

the 'better' car also tends to hold value, whereas the optioned-up car often loses much of the up-front premium that the options cost.

Genesis got it right.

The leather is probably the best place to show how Genesis gives you value. I test drove a 3.3t Elite and absolutely hated the interior. The leather just felt cheap as all hell. Take a step up or two in trim and you get nappa leather with diamond stitching. Its far nicer imo and you get other features for about the same money you'd spend just to upgrade to real leather on a German car

Edit: I'm apparently delusional and don't know the pricing tiers as well (or the features in each apparently), but my point still stands that the bang for your buck exists

I completely disagree. Look at the technology involved in each of those...and picture the cost if you (somehow) went 3rd party to get the stuff.

Even your first item...LED headlights. It's not just upgraded bulbs. When you get those...it includes directional lighting (lights turn as you steer). Not even the Prestige S4 has that (not sure about 2019).

$5k for all that is a steal. Heck...getting a full blown high-end audio system with subs, amps, etc...can cost $2k. High end leather everywhere...that is probably $2k.

Whoops, I guess the price jump is a bit more on the 2.0 models. What car do you currently drive and where are you located? The (heated/)vented seats are a godsend in California. It will really be up to you if its worth the 5k, but I'll tell you that I enjoy the use of most of those features daily.
 
No one has to target a single version of G70. There are various models in dealer inventory and drives and discussion with sales people can hone you opinion. Dealers may also be more motivated to sell certain models. More and less expensive models may have a closer gap than one assumes. Read the threads about leasing versus buying to see how to use your choices to your advantage. Know the dealer inventory through Genesis.com before you visit their physical location so you know what they know about their vehicles. Be prepared to walk from the salesman desk if you are not ready to say yes. Later in the month and later in the model year may also bend things your direction.
Point being: Worry less about $ and find value.

Remember, your likely to have this car for a least 3 years. Will you regret not getting those features in a year or two. Think ahead. If you do regret it, you will regret it every day, every time you drive.
