If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
2G Genesis Sedan (2015-2016)
Tried the 2018 G80 3.3 L engine , and could not make out difference in the engine performance . New engine feels almost the same as the older one.
It is supposed to be more powerful than the older genesis 3.8 L engine which i have.

I'm having a hard time comprehending this thread. I'm hoping you meant to say the new 3.8 in the G80 isn't much different than the 3.8 in the Genesis; you'd be correct. Same motor, same hp, etc.

If I am reading correctly then you must have an unusually high tolerance to perception and change. They are undeniably different in every way. 3.8 is naturally aspirated, 3.3 has twins. Power curves, if you look at a dyno result, are night and day different.
G80 Sport (3.3TT) 0-60: 5-5.2 sec
G80 3.8 (RWD): 6.3 sec (AWD): 6.6 sec

More than a second difference in this stat can be felt by your butt dyno. Unless it wasn't running healthy or you have your powerplants mixed up, there is difference for sure.

Thanks , you are right - i might have tried a G80 with 3.8 engine . I did not feel a difference in the new model . Made me happy feeling my old car's still doing good.

18s have the newer 8 speed auto, if anything you should of felt a shift difference. It's much quicker.

Yes i read things on paper . I am sure the G80 did not feel really different . There was the usual lag or reluctance from 0 - i see it in all the Genesis . When you start a standstill car , there is some initial reluctance to move . As if i press the accelerator and its thinking for 1-2 seconds .

I drove a bit on Auto "D" mode . Then shifted to manual and shifted from 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 . It felt just like the 2015 Genesis G380 . No sudden surge of power .

3.3t is at least $10k more expensive than 3.8 engine in the g80's and I really want one, but not sure if I should just settle for the 3.8. I don't race, but sometimes like to drive more spiritedly on rural roads. I wonder if there is a reliability difference as well. Any owner or anybody really can respond; I want to learn as much as I can before going out into the dealerships. Much appreciated!

Much depends on what you are driving now and what your expectations are. And how much the price difference affects you. When I started driving hot cars like the Corvette did 0 to 60 in 6 seconds. Now you can get a full size luxo-barge to do that. But, for only $10,000 more you can get there a second faster! If you are now driving a typical 8 to 10 second car you will be impressed with the 3.8. If you are driving a Mustang Boss, you may want more.

I'd say drive both the 3.3t Turbo and 3.8 GDI . When i tried these last time , there was not much of a difference felt on city roads. I was obviously test driving a older CPO car , so it would also depend on those individual cars . A new G80 would give you newer perspective.

I wanted a 5.0 V8 - but could not find one in the CPO market.

I noticed a significant difference between the 3.8l that I get as loaners and my 3.3 turbo. the 3.8L lags tremendously on the low end torque, there is nothing head snapping about it when you go full WOT from a stop or a roll.

the 3.3T has a lot of punch at the low end (turbos), compared to the 5.0 it accelerates quick via my seat of the pants dyno, but the 5.0 is a lot smoother and silky with it's delivery of power across the rpm range.

I have not driven either the 3.8 or 3.3TT models, however the Genesis drive-by wire system in my 5.0 seem to "stall or delay" a bit from the start when first moving. Therefore, I assume that the Genesis will feel nearly the same around town regardless of engine choice if the throttle delay exist in the V6 models, unless really pushed. Most casual light-footed drivers probably will not even notice a major difference in acceleration I bet.

For a large part of daily driving your acceleration is controlled by the cars in front of you when the light changes. You just hope no one is ahead of you when you finally get to the on ramp of the highway.

So true. You can be driving a Ferrari, but still be limited to the speed of the cars in front of you in traffic. Supercar or not.

Given how the Genesis Sedan looks ... i find many times someone on the red light looking at you and revving his engine . As if inviting you for a drag race . I let them take the lead - i dont have a launch control .

Its usually on a straight road when i catch up with others , because then its really starts to roar . Often i would say goodbye to the other car in my rear view mirror - sometimes i'm not that lucky and its a Corvette or a Mustang GT .

Seeing as I’m running the 3.8 liter when somebody pulls up and revs their engine at me I simply roll the window down and ask if they have any Grey Poupon! Lol

I'm curious, too. Have there been any reports of the 3.3T having issues over 100k or 150k miles? From what I understand, the 3.8L is rock solid and bulletproof.

According to Car & Driver the 3.3 TT V6 & the V8 are about equal in acceleration. The TT is about a tenth quicker to 60, but the V8 starts pulling away at higher speeds.

seat of the pants dyno as I said, the V8 is probably equal, but the turbos give a different feeling and driving dynamic when you punch it than that of a V8,

I've owned only V8 muscle cars most of my life, even my '39 is a 430hp ZZ4-350 (lots of upgrades to the basic crate motor) and is a lot lighter than the G80, but seat of the pants the G80 "feels" faster.

Obviously it isn't, by a long shot, I can leave it in the dust with my '39 and have, buy 3-4 car lengths from a dead stop drag race, but those turbos kicking in torque so low in the RPM band make it feel faster.

The Genesis V8 with twin turbos would be a kick in the ass..

Yeah that would be a kick in the ass - I like how the V8 just pulls with revs & keeps pulling...

How about it! The 5.0s smooth acceleration is very satisfying. I just did a 1000 mile roadtrip last weekend and it just moves effortlessly. 85mph for 12 hours and she just purrs along. V8 power 💪

Mpg isn't all that bad on those kinds of trips & speeds either - I got ~24.5 on a trip from Texas to South Carolina. Generally going around 80-85mph...
