I normally don't write or join forums but thought I'd jump in on this one. First, I believe one point of note that most persons either forgot or don't know is Genesis is basically a European designed and engineered car built in Korea. Yes Genesis pulled a coupe and hired a bunch of engineers and designers from Europe (Audi, BMW, Bentley, Aston Martin, etc) and said build us a car. By the way use our most excellent world engine, give it the fit and finish Europeans cars are noted for and the reliability Asian cars are famous - by the way can you make them real safe too?
End product is Genesis. Doesn't exceed the class in any single thing but is good at everything. One of the quietest, most comfortable in class no matter which one you choose, luxury with hints of sportiness (Don't let the car mag fan boys trick you into thinking all luxury cars must be Le Mans sports/racing cars in suits, just need the ability to avoid/get out of accident when required), ultra safe (Just ask Tiger) and plush enough to make passengers forget they're even in a car (Had 3 friends of mine, 1 drives a BMW 7 series, 1 drives a BMW 5 series, the last a Mercedes E-class, all fully loaded - each said they should've bought the Genesis after riding in my G80 ultimate).
This IS a tier A car - just ask the European guys that engineered and designed it, doesn't have the pedigree yet but if you look at unbiased review boards that actually do their homework you'll see Genesis equal to or exceeding its European rivals. Definitely beats all other Asian models.
In my driveway I have a G80 Ultimate and an Audi A6 Prestige. Used to have a BMW 5 series, replaced that with the G80. We Mercedes E-class had a while back, just sold it. Both great cars but consider the mission mid-sized BMW's and Mercedes missions are pretty close. When we want to zip around and feel sporty with some luxury pretentions we take the A6, when we want to feel stately and luxurious with some sporty pretentions we take the G80.
It's funny because that is how our friends and family see it too when driving with us. One other note is I am 6'2", 275 (Yes I go to the gym 4 days a week - friends say I look like retired LB), my wife is 4'10" (I've learned a gentleman never discusses a ladies weight - the hard way). Although both the G80 and the A6 are considered in the same class, my wife finds the G80 a bit too large for her to feel comfortable driving all the time while it feels like the right size for me, whereas the A6 feels like the right size to her, for me the A6 is edging on the smaller side, especially the seats. I am definitely more comfortable in the G80. We both agree the G80 is much more spacious on the inside, fit and finish is equivalent and we've had no issue with the reliability of either (reliability should be a luxury measurand).
So it gets down to what you're looking for in a luxury brand, a persons ego, and what you believe the value of money or image is worth. Be very careful though, prices on Genesis are creeping up and deservedly so. The brand/ego gap is closing much more quickly than many anticipated as is the image gap. If you want to look like and be the smartest person in the room Genesis does that for you plus leaving you with enough left over cash to take you and a few friends to a Michelin star restaurant and a fancy off Broadway (on Broadway if you live in New York) show in your new Genesis and invest the rest in your retirement account or kids college savings account - now that IS luxury.
