  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Steering Wheel Clicking Noise

I appreciate the input, however i’m definitely not comfortable removing my airbag.
Maybe you could find a good independent shop that would be?

Remove driver's airbag . Apply felt pad on contact point between driver's airbag springs and steering wheel. Noise will go away
Do you have any instructions or a source on how to remove the airbag?

Any input on what a fair price would be to do this? I'm in Canada. The sound is driving me NUTS but I also don't want to pay a ton of cash to get it remedied. I know I know... you have to pay the piper.

My guess is that they will charge you for a full hour of labor. It shouldn't be any more than that.

Definitely, get an expert to look at this. If the airbag deploys for any reason, it could put you in a world of pain.

Someone mentioned WD40. Was that the traditional type or the one made from silicone?

Very true. I had asked about possibly using WD40. I didn’t consider the silicone one. The advise seemed to be against it in general, so I refrained.

Agreed. Anything sprayed in the cavity between the wheel and airbag could make its way into sensitive electronics.

Just for clarity - Does this seem like the issue others have had? PS - it is MUCH louder now. Week by week it seems to get worse. I can recreate the sound at will, by gripping the horn cover area with my thumbs and index fingers and wiggling it around. Creak creak snap creak.

I’m getting the same noise. I just found this forum searching for possible resolution. Really frustrating. Started about 2 weeks ago and only getting louder.

Resolution is getting someone qualified to remove drivers airbag and install felt tape inside the holes that the airbag pins go into. Making sure felt covers all aluminum skeleton in the hole. Noise will go away. Noise is the plastic guide pins attached to drivers airbag making contact with the metal of steering wheel frame.

You gotta love youtube!

That looks easy enough. Has anyone on here done the felt tape job on their own? I saw some other posts about lubricating the springs. What type of grease is used for that?

Yes I have and felt works. Don’t want to lubricate to much because it will collect dirt.

Also the springs are not the noise. Probably what’s happening is the grease is getting into the guide hole and making it seem like the springs fixed it. It will come back.

Well I took the cover apart. Are these the pins and holes you’re referring to?

Yes where the airbag pins go in to align airbag is where you apply felt. I put felt all in the alignment holes in the steering wheel and noise is gone and hasn’t come back. The pins you circled go into holes in the steering wheel. Apply felt on the inside sides Of the holes.

That’s exactly what I ended up doing. I just rolled with it in the moment because it made sense. Click free! Thanks for the input. I’m glad I found this in page.
