If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Recently I started smelling gas in the cabin. Its coming through the vents. if the vents are shut off, there is no smell. Also, there is no smell when you first start the car. The smell comes after the car has warmed up and when the car has started 3 or 4 times after engine warm up.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.

That does not sound right. Never smelled gas in any car in 40+ years. Only in some of the beaters I had years ago. Get it checked out.

I had an engine oil leak once in a different car, and it smelled like oil. I could smell it when I started the car and worsened with motion. Do you have any oil leaking below your car at all? I would take it in to evaluate for a leak, but I'm not a car guru

No leak, oil level has been steady since last oil change. The smell only comes when you start the car and goes away when you drive. Next time I will try idling and see if it comes in through the vent

could be a gas leak under the hood. Have you started it with the hood up?

I have, I do smell something but it isnt strong and I can't pin point where it's coming from.

Could also be the carbon filter on the gas tank. It can become flooded with fuel if you pump gas beyond the first click.

I've never gone past the first click while filling up. Would the smell be continuous? Coz I dont smell it all the time, only on start ups when the engine is warm. I will try idling the engine when its warm and see if I still smell it from the vents

No, due to the increased air flow pushing it away from the car's body.

Also it's coming from the vents. If I turn off the air, I dont smell anything, but as soon as I open the vents I smell it. If it the charcoal canister wouldn't the smell be from the rear ?

Are you seeing any fluid on the ground around near your car? If you have any old boxes, take one apart and slide it under the engine. If you are leaking fuel, it will stain the cardboard before evaporating.

I haven't seen any fluid but I will put a cardboard piece and check for stains.

Dealer looked at this issue and said it was more like smell of oil rather than gas under the hood, and it was coming from the catch can. I know what the catch can smells like so I'm a little hesitant on believing this. Plus I'm getting different smells when I smell the catch can and the smell coming from above fuel pump. Dealer mentioned they checked the fuel lines , evap system and there were no leaks. I will be taking it to another dealership and if they say the same. If that's the case then I guess I got nothing to worry about.

I have a favor to ask , would any of you be willing to smell the fuel pump under the hood of your own car to see if there are any odors (gas or oil or both) you may need to get low and close to the fuel pump.

Thank you.

I'm in toronto, I meant smell under the hood of your own car to see if its "normal"
No, it is not normal. Any car I ever owned had no odor in the cabin unless there was a leak or spill under the hood.

I have a feeling it's the purge valve. The smell is not continuous, mainly happens on startup when the engine is warm. I checked the fuel trims and they are pretty close to 0, if it was a major leak, the fuel trims would show lean. I might just replace the valve and see what happens
