  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Operation of "auto hold" braking

I too learned to drive a 3 on the tree, (1973 Ford F150) I grew up driving manual of all kinds I have used the clutch to hold the car in place so often I have little thought on how to hold the car in place I can see/understand why its useful and will likely use it on those long commutes with high traffic. Just not for normal everyday driving but I don't use cruise for everyday driving either and I still like that.

Permanent is a bad idea! Matter of fact I don't use it anymore after a bad experience at the car wash, I had it on and got on the carwash bay tracks put the car in neutral and bang car starts jumping up and down cause the brakes were set. I panic and couldn't get the damn thing off being that the tracks were trying to pull the car. NEVER AGAIN!

I do always turn it off. I have this gut that the car wash area does not aware yet of auto hold. Not only that, I also make sure that mirrors are folded.

My preference in this situation is to not use car washes.

I put a brand new Buick with a metallic red paint job thru a car wash 20 years ago.

It came out with billions (literally) of tiny scratches front to back.

Never again.

Maybe its not "auto hold" stopping the car as it enters a car wash, but the car trying to save itself from tracks that will scratch the rims, brushes which scar the paint and harsh soap that will strip the wax ;)

That's a good example of why default on is not a great idea - I never thought of that. Thanks!

I would think (haven't tried) that shifting to neutral should disengage auto brake. I use the feature every now and again but don't like it. Personal preference.

No doesn't work, I had the car in neutral

I only use the car wash with a white or silver car, when I had black cars I would always hand wash.

You may or may not know: When the "AUTO HOLD" is enabled, it activates the Brake Lights until you put your foot on the accelerator pedal. I agree, it's a nice option.

So you have to turn it on everytime my husband has the G70 and his stays on 😩
That would be nice. I had a 2015 Genesis and now a 2018 G80 and have to turn it on every time. Nice feature though.

My first car with auto hold was my old 2010 VW Passat CC 3.6 and it changed how I felt about stop and go traffic. I fell in love with the feature because it reduced how much I need to hold the brakes on inclines and the multiple stopping sessions along the way. I made sure that every car I purchase after that had the feature including my current 2015 Genesis.

The Genesis autohold system is very good and do not require a special scan tool to perform brake work like the older VW(2010 CC) and KIA(2014 Optima) electronic parking brake systems I worked on.

Damn, I do not feel as bad now. I also forgot to turn off my auto hold in my Genesis at a car wash when I first bought it. Scared the crap out of me as well, but no damage occurred.

Ugh wonder why his stays on and no other does

No worries.... I did the same thing!

It's a very useful feature for me when in busy traffic, drive throughs, or long traffic lights.

One thing I did find out while waiting for gas - don't take your seatbelt off (in anticipation of getting out when pulled up to the gas pump) since the car WILL NOT take off the parking brake by pressing the accelerator. It kind of makes one panic that the brakes are never going to let you go forward, but putting the seatbelt back on allowed the car to go forward. Obvious safety feature but surprising all the same.

The other surprising thing is that if you forget to disengage the feature before putting your vehicle in Park, upon turning off the ignition you will hear the whirring of the parking brakes engaging as the car engine stops. Not sure if I want to leave the brakes engaged while the car sits, particularly in damp weather. Irrational fear perhaps that the brakes may seize in the ON position? I try and ensure that the system is OFF before parking.

Two cars, seven years, 80,000 miles and I let the parking brake go on. Especially good if you are parked on a slope.

I have to wonder if you are doing more potential damage by not using it..

Probably spilled coffee on the button and now it it stuck.
But only once!
Yeah... Auto Hold is ALWAYS deactivated by the time I'm in the wash queue!

I don't use auto hold, but i do engage the parking brake every time i shut the car off. Done that with every car i've driven. If it means I need to get it maintenanced, so be it.
