  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Okay, so title says it. Verizon is set to shut down their 3g network Dec 31, 2022. So that means 2015 Gennys will no longer have bluelink access. I know that other hyundais have already experienced this or are about to experience this with the sprint cdma shutdown (I believe that's what they used before verizon?). Anyone know anything about the modem in our 2015 genesises? I'm pretty sure they're 3g but would love to be proved wrong. From what I know, hyundai switched to verizon lte in 2016 or 2017 or something like that. But anyways, what do y'all think? Do you think hyundai will offer a module upgrade like onstar did back in the day with the analog to digital conversion and soon with the network shutdown? I doubt it though based on how hyundai has responeded to the shutdown on other hyundai vehicles. Anyways, thoughts?

From the last time we talked about this (January 2021). According to the dealer bulletin, 2015 Genesis is not affected. The switch had already been made to LTE modems for the G2 genesis platform.

Yes, but this is talking about the 2g network shutdown from aeris communications. The genesis is when hyundai switched to verizon, howerver, I'm pretty sure they used 3g until like at least 2016 or 2017. Verizon is set to shutdown their 3g network dec 31, 2022. So if this car uses 3g, that means we have until then when bluelink doesn't work anymore on these cars.

well shit.

Tom's is usually pretty good about getting their details right. According to the article we do have a 3G modem in the G2 Genesis. Unless they made significant technology changes, I wouldn't be surprised if whole swathes of the the G2 platform end up losing connectivity at the end of 22. That's ALOT of vehicle owners pissed at Hyundai.....

To be fair, I'm surprised a LOT of owners aren't already pissed at how badly Bluelink has worked for the last 6 months. I think the actual service has been down more than it has been up.

I know about half the times I want to remote start my car, the app says the servers are down for maintenance.

And then there was that one time the dealer lost my car on their parking lot and Bluelink had not been working since before the car was towed. Bluelink support actually told us the car was dropped at another dealership based on (erroneous) GPS coordinates saved. It wasn't actually lost, the tow truck got stuck in mud somewhere and dropped off a "light tan" Genesis instead of a black one.

Agree, it has been terrible. OTOH, something new, Lock and Start. After using the app for almost 9 years, it finally does what my old $139 aftermarket starter did. Found that out today.

So does your Genesis 2017 G80 have 3G? I have the same car, which is why I am asking.

Yes, 3G and it is going away at the end of the year.

I have a 2015 and I received the e-mail that it's going away at the end of this year.

No excuse. They could have put in 4G in 2015.
They could have created a 5G upgrade kit. But they won't because the take rate would be low.

Although I love my G80 it has turned me off the brand by not providing any alternative to the elimination of 3G. Even if they offered a high cost option I would consider it since my G80 has low mileage.

There is an high-cost aftermarket option to get you back the cellular remote start, lock/unlock and cellular alarm features, but not the rest of them.

What is this option?!?! Oh, wait..... i assume you mean an aftermarket alarm / remote start? I immediately went to something that would work in concert with the existing bluelink system.

I have a 2015 5.0, and this makes me furious. There have been multi year delays in shutting 3g; some were some that were going to sit down as early as 2019.
The executives can choke a horse dong.

I have had genesis vehicles since first us 2009 model. I have 2018 g80 now. If they allow the 3g shutdown without a solution, it willbe the end of my brand loyalty. Will never purchase another one
Won't get me again.

So, with all of us (2015 Genesis 3.8, 56K Mi.) upset, knowing there MUST be options, who/how do we contact Genesis to try pressuring them to offer an upgrade. I for one would pay, and expect many of us would.
Also, what exactly are the features we will lose.
Lastly, when I clicked that "aftermarket" link I don't know what to look for

The 3G modem is integrated in the head unit so not a simple unplug the old and plug in the new. I believe LG was one of the makers of the unit so they share some blame. Would be nice if they could come up with a plug in module. I don't know if that is possible.

The features you lose are anything the Genesis App does. No way to talk to the car. Don't know of any others.

I'm going to look into aftermarket remotes.
