Rear differential assembly replacement at 2500kms

I've been following this thread for a while and find myself listening for this noise when I ride along with my wife. Has anyone recorded the sound that a failing diff makes? Or is it so obvious that if we had the issue we'd know immediately? I just don't want to get 1 month past warranty period years from now and find we had signs of this issue all along.

Now that I've had my rear diff replaced I am noticing a slightly better mpg. Has anyone noticed that after the replacement?

Same here, I've been hearing that sound between 28-39 mph. Easily reproducible by letting up on the gas pedal and finding that coasting pushing feel. I took it to one dealership and they said the sound was normal. I of course was not happy with that explanation. I made an appointment at another dealership and they confirmed today that I need a new rear diff. They ordered the part today and said it should be in next Wednesday. When the part does arrive, they'll call me to schedule an appointment. I am concerned that it'll happen again as well if they have not redesigned the part. They told me that they have done 2 of these already. I wonder how many people don't realize that the noise is an indication of a problem and are just driving it until it just fails. Oh, I forgot to mention I have a 2021 3.5 Prestige with just a little over 6200 miles.

Sorry for the late reply, I would call the dealership that replaced the diff and ask if they did a software update. This is what they did after replacing my second diff and all seems well. They also replaced more than the diff this last time.

It starts out with a very quiet whine when you get the accelerate and decelerate to a static position. (Not accelerating or decelreating)
The whine will get louder over time.

Is there any connection between the electronic limited slip differential and these failures or does it seem from this forum that all differentials are subject to failure? Perhaps someone with access can check to see if there is a "soft recall bulletin" presented to the Genesis dealers that we don't get to see?

I have wondered that same thing on the limited slip or the lock. I know they did a software update and replaced more rear end parts this second time. If the dealer contacts Genesis, they have all the latest of what to do with these.

I have noticed that as well. A better MPG. I get 27 highway and 19 city if pay attention to how I accelerate.

Just wanted to let people know about this issue in case they have the same concerns.

I bought my gv80 2.5t advanced (Canada) a month ago. It's a demo with 1200kms. I noticed a whirring/rubbing sound on the right side early on and brought it to their attention. Took them a couple of weeks to get back to me (I had to follow up) and then pick up the car. They left me with a G70, which I didn't take issue with as I figured it would be a few days or week.

The rear differential assembly has to be replaced and they don't have the parts. July 9 is the delivery date but they said it could be later than that.

The other (relatively) minor issue is that the battery won't charge to full capacity so the Idle Stop Go stopped working after a week.

Anyone else hear a similar whirring/rubbing sound only when you take your foot off the gas or the break when coasting?

Really disappointed with my first Genesis. My two previous brand new Hyundais didn't give me any major issues like this, but I guess the parts would have been more readily available.

Bought our GV80 in April 2021 and reported the whining in rear end differential at 1500 miles. dealership ordered in May and replaced rear differential in Aug 2021. Genesis differentials are manufactured and assembled in China then shipped to WonJu South Korea for installation. Engineers reported the ongoing bearing failures.

Most mentioned which engine they had but only one person with the differential issue mentioned they had 4WD. Nobody else mentioned if they had 4 or All Wheel drive. I would assume this part would be different on the two drive versions but the same on the two engines. Did all the people with issues have AWD?

They're all either RWD or AWD. I would assume the failures are only on AWD models due to how the drivetrain is packaged

I have 3.5tt AWD as well. Have had differential and battery replaced after failure. Waited a month for replacements in both cases.

Last September I brought my 21 GV80 AWD 3.5TT to the shop with the exact roaring noise at 30-40 MPH. They gave me a loaner and took about a months to replace a seal leaking on rear end. Got back in October and seal and new jack shaft fixed the leak but nothing with the roar. Started getting worse at that point (5000 miles on unit). Took it back and they kept about 3 weeks before deciding it was the rear end as I indicated when I took it in originally. They gave me a new GV70 to drive while they waited almost two months for a new rear end. Finally got it back right after Christmas and noise was gone. I now have 10,500 miles and honestly I think the noisy is back and very faint right now but fear it will grow louder again like it did before. I was glad to see that others have experienced this issue and not just me. It is time for the dealer to come get it for oil change and service and figure I would mention that I think we may be starting to have the same issue again. Will have to give it some time to see if continues to get louder.

I just got my 2021 GV80 2.5 RWD Prestige back from the dealer after waiting over 2 months for the differential to be replaced, after I brought it in twice for the same noise (identical sound to what everyone here explains). The dealer only heard the problem after I drove it with the tech, who now admitted that their dealer is recently starting to see this identical noise/ issue more often. I bought mine certified pre owned with 7500 miles on it and noticed the issue almost immediately (unsure if it started out as such on the initial test drive). As others stated, you have to hold the gas pedal exactly at a certain point to hear the noise and just maintain speed. I originally thought it was just the way the car was, as I traded in a 2016 Nissan Murano that had a high pitched noise upon light acceleration/ speed maintenance when holding in just the right spot, which was also deemed to be normal operation, so I thought it was something similar with the Genesis, until I read this thread!!! They also had to replace both of the rear shock absorbers in my GV80 due to a defect (making a clunking sound). Curious if this differential issue is mostly seen in RWD vs AWD models, or only in the 2021 vs 2022-23 model GV80s??? And I hope it does not come back to mine!

I have had my 2021 GV80 2.5 all wheel drive for a year and a half. The rear differential has been replaced twice. The whole first year I had it in service for over 75 days. So filed for the Utah lemon law. Because of all the aftermath of covid they could not replace the car with a new one so I chose to take a cash settlement and keep the car. It was almost impossible to find what I wanted in a car. So I decided to keep the car because I do love everything else about it. They said the second time that they replace the diff, that is was new updated parts and the same thing about the software. So I felt like the problem had been taken care of. I have driven the car another 6000 miles and now it is happening again. The same exact sound. Just called the dealership and feel like throwing a temper tantrum. I have to have the car towed from my house because the dealership is 3 hours away. It's quite an ordeal. Depending how long this takes them if I need to I will be filing another lemon law suit. In utah you just have to have the car out of your hands more that 30 days or to the dealership for the same thing 4 times in a year. So dang frustrating.

I have a 2023 GV80 3.5t with 1800 miles and just yesterday, began noticing the same sound at the 35-45 mph range.

I recently had the actuator assembly on the e-LSD replaced because of the warning message.

I’m current out of town and will call the dealer as soon as I return.

2021 2.5, 15k miles. have noticed the sound for many months, dealer did not replicate the noise so i had to take it back and have the manager ride with me and he heard the noise. they ordered a new rear diff, it was recently replaced and so far so good. I hope the fix is permanent.

Update to my original post- after about 2,500 miles with the new differential, the noise is back. I drove with the same tech that originally worked on my GV80 and he said he heard it again, maybe even louder this time. Waiting on the official diagnosis (been a week already), but I have a feeling I know the answer. I love everything else about the car, so it's a shame, but I think I have to give it back to Genesis (they already issued me a repurchase offer). Now I am debating if I should get a 2022 GV80 instead or change brands, since I have not read about any differential issues with the 2022. Lesson learned- do not buy a new model the first year it is out!!! Anyone have any comments if this same issue has happened to their 2022 GV70 or GV80?
