If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Good day all. I bought a 2012 Genesis sedan in 2015. I LOVE IT!!!!! This is the first foreign vehicle i have ever purchased and truly love the car. I pretty much do my own maintenance on the car (I am cheap), but also don't have time to "wait" at the dealer for them to service my G.

It is time (per the maintenance guide) to change the trans fluid. The dealer wants $250 to do the job, and I see the trans fluid itself is pricey. My G is a 4 door, 3.8. I am told by the dealer that the trans is an 8 speed model, and that the capacity is 12 quarts (that's 3 gallons!). I called one dealer, they say that the trans is sealed and that it does not need changing. I called another dealer, they say that there is no pan gasket or filter, which is why they say to only "flush" the trans.

Anyway, if anyone has changed their own trans fluid, please share your experience (comments/videos).

Total capacity is 10.14 qts, but you aren't going to get it all out doing a drain and fill, which is what we do at my dealership. There is a filter, but it's incorporated in the pan, which is $155.

According to the shop manual, there is no need to change the fluid under normal usage. Only during severe use do you change it every 100k miles.

Hyundai considers severe use as:
• Driving in rough road (Bumpy, Gravel, Snowy, Unpaved road, etc)
• Driving in mountain road, ascent/descent
• Repetition of short distance driving
• More than 50% operation in heavy city traffic during hot weather above 30°C(89.6°F) .
• Police, Taxi, Commercial type operation or trailer towing, etc

+1 to what John said. :good:

I agree with John. Note: the shop manual and owners manual are a little ambiguous for SS. The shop manual states 100K and the owners manual states 60K.
I'm not sure if my car qualifies for SS but after 100K will likely do a drain and fill only which uses about 7 qts of special HYUNDAI genuine ATF SP-IV-RR.

I spotted a case of "Ravenol" (made in Germany) on Amazon for $108 for a case of 12. Is it good tranny oil?

I have actually done two done two drain and fills at this point and I'm at about 80000. I bought my car used it was not well cared for as well as sitting on a lot for almost a year before I picked it up at 27000. At 50 I did a drain and fill and also again at 70. Overkill yes but 2 changes will yield I think about 75% new fluid after mixing with the old. I used Valvoline Maxlife which meets the spec. I believe there is a thread somewhere in here about it. I will probably do it again at 100000, then again at 120000 with a new pan/filter. I plan on running this car into the ground so with that being said I go way overboard. I just don't trust the flushing machines not to blow something up. Plus at $30ish a gallon its relatively cheap.

Yes, prob overkill but it's your car, so there you go. Why not send a sample of the used oil out for a test next change and find out exactly what condition it is in..you may find that you CAN go longer between changes...

Where did you buy the filter?

My understanding is that the filter is built into the Transmission oil pan on the 8 spd. Due to this I didn't change it. Only one I could find was OEM and the best price i had found was on HYUNDAIOEMPARTS.com. I figure drain and fill every 30000 will extend the filter in there quite a bit.

Maybe so, but usually driving it sanely will do better at extending the life of a transmission. LOL.

Sorry to dig up old threads but this meet my car = 2012 3.8 Sedan and am also looking for Transmission Fluid change and the dealer said they do a "Reverse Flush" whatever that is but said it replaces about 12quarts of the fluid and they dont do Drain and Fill. The cost is also resonable at $250 so wanted to know any advice as I've read that "Flushing" is bad for the car but thats the only option offered.....car is at 72,000 miles and dont realy have any issues but am doing it proactively...

another bump here. have a 2011 genesis. 62k miles. wondering if transmission fluid change makes sense because of the years rather than the miles. don't think the driving is severe condition driving. although can't say how it was for the first 11k miles, but over the last 10 years, there has been no trouble and there is no symptoms causing me to consider transmission change either. just trying to be proactive as I like the car.

thank you for sharing any insights.

You change transmission fluid to avoid having a problem, not to solve one. I think that you at 62K miles and no problems perfectly fit that. I would change the fluid. Make sure the correct fluid is used.

I have the 12 genesis sedan 3.8, so I'm seeing the Ravenol is specific but is the valvoline max life safe for it.

Did you get a quote from your local dealership as this is about a $250-$300 cost in the past.

Okay, digging this old thread up as I have to address few things on the car:
Contacted 2 Kia Dealerships near me:
1) 1st said they cant do it and even if they could they dont know the cost upfront....
2) Second Kia dealership quoted me $199 for the Trans service and said they use a pump to push in new and pump out old fluid ad will use whats recommended or a universal fluid that falls in the range. Rear Diff was $149 so not bad. They did say that they dont recommend doing it under 100,000 miles even on the Genesis.
3) Hyundai's near me are quoting $500 now for the service for Trans and $180 for read Diff

Let me know what you guys think of about this for #3.

#3...Holy SH*T. That seems super high. At 89,000+/- miles I had initial transmission done for $199.00 and rear diff done for $99.00. Next one will done by me along with changing the transmission filter/pan. There is a guy on Youtube that does his own transmissions for his Genesis and Equus vehicles and is a genius. Different guy that does his diff service and he makes it look super easy.
