If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

USB Port No Longer Working

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Man, that sucks.

Lesson learned.

THESE CARS COME WITH A 3/36 ELECTRONICS WARRANTY. PERIOD. Consider yourself warned if you buy a 2015 Genesis, even if it is a low mileage CPO car like mine.

If your dealership will goodwill these parts and labor, consider yourself very lucky. I could not get them to budge, I even asked if they'd split the labor cost. No dice.

The newer models come with a 5 year warranty. Pretty much the same equipment but they don't want to stand behind it at all if you have a 2015.

I did ask for a price on a replacement head unit. Using my VIN, it's $600 with a core exchange not including the labor. So @ $120/hr for the two hour swap, it's about $840 if that goes bad on you - way better than the $4k horror stories I've read here. The USB port and the radio are TWO SEPARATE MODULES by the way.

Anyway, $440 is cheaper than me dumping the vehicle, which I seriously considered. Part was $139, the rest is "labor". The major X factor here is that there is a slight possibility it is NOT the USB controller and is actually the H/U. These guys are car mechanics, not IT people, which is why it has spent nearly 4 days in the shop with everyone scratching their heads.

So does anyone know if that is covered if you bought the extra warranty from the dealership?

UPDATE:

The service rep told me they swapped out a "working" USB controller from another car and CarPlay worked flawlessly. They switched back to the original one and put it back together so I could have the car while the part is being ordered. I paid for the part and one hour of labor ($301). Should be in on Tuesday.

Problem is CarPlay now functions 100%, nothing seems to be wrong with it anymore. I'm wondering if the cable was loose instead. I also wonder if I can get my $301 back.

Nice, its one of those hard to replace parts at the dealership warranty because they will never be able to reproduce it while they have it. but luckily I think its like 28 bucks or so for the usb port on myhyundaiparts.com.
I notice in some fords that don’t have CarPlay on the head unit the can replace the USB port on the car with a newer version and it updates the head unit with CarPlay... think it’s called ford sync

2015 Genesis 5.0 sedan, CPO, 29k miles, purchased 7/25/18. I bought this specific model because I wanted to use CarPlay. I just want to be clear about that from the outset, that it was one of the major reasons I bought this vehicle.

Anyway, all of the trouble started out as a CarPlay issue. It would disconnect from my iPhone 6+ randomly and I'd get a "connection canceled" notice. Sometimes all this would require was for me to unplug the phone once and plug it back in, and then it would work again. Other times, however, it would require connecting and reconnecting multiple times until it would actually boot up CarPlay. In some instances, nothing I did would work. It would say "reading USB" and pop the CarPlay logo on the screen and then it would vanish. This issue would usually resolve itself after the car sat for a period of time, and CarPlay would continue to work without issue for several days, then it would act up again. I tried three or four different cables, including a brand new official Apple lightning cable, and that would not rectify it. I do know the USB port was getting juice because the battery logo would turn green indicating it was charging.

At first I suspected the phone. My 6+ was acting sluggish so I decided to try my girlfriend's iPhone 8. It worked fine. I tried my friend's iPhone 6 and it worked as well. On Friday, after CarPlay started acting up again, I bought a brand new iPhone Xs Max. That worked fine. Until today.

This morning, I plugged the phone in as usual on my short drive to my office. No problems. I then came back to the car a few hours later for a drive across town. It worked fine. On my way back, though, it inexplicably disconnected itself. Unplugged it, plugged it back in, and CarPlay would show up on the screen and then suddenly vanish. Eventually I got it to work, but anytime I would launch an app (maps or Apple music, or even the phone), CarPlay would crash and disconnect the phone. I did notice it was taking a while for the phone to register that it was charging, too, maybe 10-15 seconds after it was plugged in. I drove to lunch then home and grabbed yet another cable plus my old iPhone. I plugged the new cable into the USB port and noticed it wasn't charging at all. So I tried my 6+. Nothing. My girlfriend works across the street and I asked her to bring her phone by. Her phone didn't register, either. I borrowed my business partner's 6s and same thing. I tried all 4 iPhones with 3 different lightning cables. I cycled the nav system to turn off CarPlay and then back on. Nothing, seems the USB port is dead.

I took it down to the local Hyundai dealer and they told me I might require a new head unit. You have to be kidding me, right? Can't the port just be fixed? I was also told the head unit might not be covered since the vehicle has been in service for a little over three years. I know I'm speculating here and probably working myself up but, if that's the case, the whole notion is absolutely outrageous.
Same exact issue here with a 2015 Genesis. What did you find out?

2015 5.0 non-Ultimate here with the same problem. Any chance on getting that part number for the USB controller? Aux jack works, just no juice or data from the USB port anymore.

My 2016 had the usb port replaced under warranty a year ago after they thought it was the Navi unit & replaced it 1st to no avail. My ancient Ipod Nano would play for weeks( Always left in the usb port) then it would suddenly quit.

Just had this issue today with my 2018 Genesis G80. The power works through the usb but the usb isn’t turning on CarPlay in the vehicle

Wow, So I'm not the only one who had this problem. I assume this was my fault because ideally, you don't want to pull the cable by its length and only by the head of the USB. I say this because I did the exact thing I dreaded. I mistakenly yanked the cable by its length and a small part of the interface had ajar out of its housing. I tried to push it back in and pushed in the USB, but there was no data. The power pins seem to connect still. I'm assuming whatever wire carries data came loose. I was thinking about prying it myself but I'm afraid I may damage the plastic.

I'm really contemplating if I should do this job on my own.

Update: So my apple car play is doing just the same as everyone else. I connected it today and it started to work. This sounds like a software issue.
