Flickering headlights from turn signal

I've been having issues where my headlights will flicker intermittently when the turn signal's activated. Happens both left and right, but only occasionally.

Looking at old threads, it seems that a replacement of the turn signal stalk should fix the issue. Just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this and whether it would still be covered under warranty for a 2016 Genesis sedan (warranty active from June 2016). Based in Canada.

This has happened to be about 5 times over two years. Startling but not intrusive enough to go to the dealership about. If they flicker and stay off when it's dark and the lights are in "automatic" mode, that would be a cause for a dealership run. Until then.

I keep my headlight setting on "auto" at all times. After making a left turn, the lights will sometimes cycle through all the light settings for several seconds, turning the lights on and off, sometimes ending in the "on" position and other times in the "off" position, necessitating that I manually turn them back on. I mentioned it to the dealer the last time I had it in for service, but of course, they couldn't replicate it on demand, so didn't do anything about it. Fortunately, it doesn't happen too often.

I had the same issue with my headlights going off intermittently. Dealer replaced the turn signal stalk and the problem was resolved. My dealer did this work under warranty,

Really!? Under Warranty!?!? I have experienced the same problem intermittently, usually leading to lights flickering off, glad to hear replacing the Stalk was the resolution, was worried it was electrical gremlins. Have mentioned the issue to my Dealer, they just said "bring it in when it happens", which is impractical, I will mention this thread and see if I can't get them to look up any KB articles and do it under Extended Warranty. THX

PS: The Ext. Warranty has already worth it..

just had mine replaced , it was the steering control module . problem went away.

As mentioned in my previous post, the tech couldn’t replicate the issue when I had it in for service last year, so nothing was done to try to fix it. Even though it didn’t happen regularly, I was determined to capture the problem on video to show them on my next service visit. Since it almost always happens two times in a row, when it happened once, I grabbed my phone and started recording and sure enough, it happened again on the next turn. It was nighttime, the road was unlit, and the lights ended the cycle in the off position, so it was pretty clear that it needed to be addressed. I showed the video to the tech and they‘re replacing the stalk tomorrow under warranty. Hope it fixes the problem.

I've had this same issue twice, I have a 2013 Genesis R Spec. The first time when my lights would flicker while using the turn signals, the car was still under warranty. So it was fixed for free, the multi function switch was replaced. Fast advance 3 years and I am experiencing the same issue again! But of course, the dealership balked at repairing again for free since the car is no longer under warranty. I believe this to be a safety issue and I have lodged a complaint with the NHTSA. There are already several complaints registered with the NHTSA. If everybody who is having this issue register a complaint with the NHTSA, it might inspire Hyundai to do the right thing and issue a recall for this safety issue. I believe the TSB #20-BE-009H notice that was issued is only for a couple years models 2015 - 2016. This issue is obvious far more widespread then just a couple model years.

Can anyone confirm that fixing the staulk helped the issue with headlights turning off at night? I have a Genesis that is a 2016 3.8 and it is doing the same thing. Very scary when it’s pitch black out

Hyundai did an extended warranty on that stalk to 120k miles recently... if that's the culprit, they owe you one.

I did not know about any TSB for this issue until now I can confirm this fix does work though.

I was having this issue and traced it to my turn signal multi switch. I replaced it with a used one online and it fixed the problem. This was over a year ago and still have not had the issue return. It was an easy replacement as well.

Hi PauleyDucati........when you replaced your turn signal multi function switch. Did you have to mess around with the airbag. I guess some model years you have to remove the air bag and some model years you don't. BTW, what year is your Genesis? Please advise. Thanks!

I have a 2012 4.6L. The multifunction switch comes off of the steering column behind the wheel itself so you will not have to mess with the air bag at all. Three screws hold the plastic steering column clamshell together, once you remove those, the multi function switch is held to the column with two or three more screws. Just pull it out and disconnect it after that. I just took mine apart really quick to take a couple of photos. I don't use any photo hosting services or social media but if you PM me your email I can send you the photos to show you what it looks like, let me know.

The tsb states labor is .6 hours so it can't be that bad. Although the pictures look a bit daunting for a diy. If my switch goes out I will have the dealer replace it under warranty.

Ahhh, I suppose it would help to know what generation Genesis you're working with lol. Everything I mentioned above goes for the first generation sedans, mine is a 2012 4.6.

Almost everything on the first gen sedan is easily accessible, at least everything I've had to replace. I'm surprised to hear this. Removing an air bag typically isn't a big deal, they're not like a Hollywood movie ticking time bomb... but removing steering wheels normally requires specific tools and can be a hassle. I would let the dealer take care of the issue if you have that generation Genesis as AndyJ said.

I am constantly surprised at people with cars more than 10 years old complaining that the manufacturer won’t fix something for free. Warranties don’t and shouldn’t last forever. If the warranty was longer the cars would be a lot more expensive as greater warranty costs would have to be factored into the price.
