Oil Filter on 2012

I am due for my first oil change on my 2012 and I stopped into my local shop the other day thinking I could get out of there pretty quick but the tech said it looked like he had to take off the skip plate in order to access the oil filter. He said the car has a full skid plate underneath and Hyundai put a hole to access the drain plug but no area to access the filter. This doesn't sound right to me and I haven't gotten my butt under there to investigate. Anyone know if you have to drop the skid plate to change the oil filter?

There have been some other threads on the 2012 V6 oil changes, and what your service guy said about the skid plate is apparently so. Previous to 2012 the Genesis Sedan V6 filter was on top of the engine bay and very easy to remove, but I beleive they had problems with oil draing out of the filter when the engine was off (and therefore empty when engine first started). Maybe needed some more room on top for the GDI stuff as well.

Had the oil changed in my R-Spec the other day. Yes, the skid plates have to come off. Perhaps just the front one but I watched the tech take off both front, and a smaller rear, to get to the oil filter.

OP was talking about Genesis V6, which is different engine than R-Spec or 4.6.

yes you have to remove the plastic panel to access the filter in the new 3.8 GDI in the 2012 V6, takes about 30 seconds.

1. Park the car on level ground.
Start the engine and let it warm up.
2. Turn the engine off and open the hood.
Remove the engine cover.
3. Wait for 5 minutes after loosening the oil filter cap to drain well the oil in the oil filter.
4. Drain engine oil.
(1)Remove the oil filler cap.
(2)After lifting the car, remove the oil drain plug and drain oil into a container.
5. Replace the oil filter.
(1)Disconnect the oil filter cap from the oil filter body.
(2)Remove the oil filter element.
(3)Check and clean the oil filter installation surface.
(4)Check the part number of a new oil filter is same as old one.
(5)Install a new oil filter element (A) and new O-ring (B).
(6)Apply clean engine oil to the new O-rings.
Lightly screw the oil filter cap into place, and tighten it until the O-ring contacts the seat.
(7)Finally tighten it again by specified tightening torque.
Tightening torque :
34.3N.m (3.5kgf.m, 25.3lb-ft)
6. Fill new engine oil.
(1)Install the oil drain plug with a new gasket.
Tightening torque :
34.3 ~ 44.1N.m (3.5 ~ 4.5kgf.m, 25.3 ~ 32.5lb-ft)
(2)Fill with new engine oil, after removing the engine oil level gauge.
Capacity :
Total : 6.0 L (6.34 US qt, 5.28 lmp qt, 1.58 US.gal)
Oil pan : 5.5 L (5.81 US qt, 4.84 lmp qt, 1.45 US.gal)
Drain and refill including oil filter :
5.2 L (5.49 US qt, 4.58 lmp qt, 1.37 US.gal)
•Fill a half oil of the total amount first and do the rest again after about one minute later.
•Do not fill oil over the 'F' line, checking the level with the oil level gauge.
(3)Install the oil filler cap and oil level gauge.
7. Start the engine and check to be sure no oil is leaking from the drain plug or oil filter.
8. Recheck the engine oil level.

well...I parked too close to a concrete wheel stop.....when I backed up, it tore up the plastic thing that hangs down behind the bumper...pushed it back up...but where do I get a new one, and what is it called?

Dealer parts department. Its an OEM part. Also most high end cars today have a cover over the bottom of the engine compartment. My Acura did, as does my 2005 Mercedes.

I did my first oil change last weekend on my R-Spec and thought about cutting out a square right under the oil filter and placing a hinge there so I did not have to undo the covers.

Would make changing the oil/filter much easier/faster

that is exactly what I am going to do the next time oil is changed. Don't understand why there is access to the drain plug and not the filter. Makes no sense.
