Dilemma: 2011 V8 or 2012 V6

Sorry "DeeVa", with a name like that let us not point fingers about portraying "status".

i just deleted many things about my life that would've helped you understand the bolded section of your meaningless post.

What does your post have to do with ANYTHING i have typed?? Owning a Hyundai gives me "substance"? Right. i have family for that, my job/retirement comes second and then personal possessions friend. i would be happy driving an '89 suburban around but i don't because i DON'T have to.

PS. i have set up my life so that at age 55 (regardless of the economy, if i live that long,) i will be vacationing around the country, with my wife and enjoying retirement. will you?

i'll ignore your nonsense and you can ignore me, how's that?

The fact remains that when you purchased your Genesis you decided to save the $1,500 and go with the V6. Even though you say that anyone that buys a V6 must be an idiot. You have a V8 courtesy of a generous dealer. Those are the facts, so deal with it. And yes, I would have really been convinced by all of those deleted "facts"! Your posts speak volumes.

I wish there was that little "ignore" button, can't they add that?

No need for the forum to add ignore button, consider it our little gift...you are now officially ignored. Enjoy joy you ride.

Car salesman are the lowest form of life on earth. That's already been shown to me by both Hyundai dealers I've visited while looking at the Genesis. You better go in knowing more than they do about your chosen car. Know what you want to pay or they will throw you under the bus without a second thought. It's your money they're interested in-nothing else.

I don't know what dealerships your doing business with but my experiences have been quite the opposite. Consumers today have everything at their disposal to make sure they get the best deal possible (#1 weapon being the internet). I haven't paid more than invoice on my last 3 cars purchased, and one of them they actually let go of part of their hold-back $$ which is roughly 3% below "invoice". A lot of dealers today don't even pay commissions to the salespersons but simply pay them on the amount of vehicles they can sell in a month (volume selling). The days of a car dealer totally raking a customer over the coals is all but gone, unless the consumer is truly uneducated when they walk in to purchase a car. Your biggest thing to worry about is what your being offered for the trade in, so smartly as many magazines etc. will tell you about buying techniques is to negotiate as if you have no trade, get your "rock bottom" price then after you have that number tell them oh..by the way I will be trading in (insert your car here). If your trade in is paid for then you just have to have a # in mind your willing to accept for it. You can know it's value by simply going online and looking up current book value.

When I go in I already know what I'm going to pay give or take $500...but then again I have been dealing with the same dealer and salesperson now for the last 10 years, so maybe I'm the exception to the rule. I like my dealership and they have given me nothing but top notch customer service from the point of sale through the great care I get when it's being serviced.

Hi guys. I am new to this site and had to create an account b/c i can see people know what they are talking about. i am one of the many that probably come to this site looking for info to help decide whether or not to buy a hyundai. i am trying to decide b/t the 2012 3.8 Genesis sedan and the 2011 ES350. I love the Genesis based on my test drive. I love the Lex based on my love for Toyo and overall quality Toyo/Lex has provided me time and time again. My mechanic begs me not to buy a hyundai b/c of what he says is "sub par quality, mechanical & electric problems". He has been a mechanic at Acura & Honda dealers for a total of 25 years. He says Honda/Ac and Toyo/lex are the only cars he recommends for quality. He hates german cars. I value his opinion tremendously, but would LOVE to get some of your feedback on your experience with the RELIABILITY of your Genesis...good, bad, or otherwise....any experiences/problems you may have encountered with your Genesis or the dealership would be appreciated greatly.

And finally, I like the 3.8 vs. the 4.6 b/c of gas mileage. But my understanding is the fully loaded models are identical except for engine. Is that accurate? Here is a link to the model I am looking to buy: http://www.pacificohyundai.com/new/...adelphia-0a4a2b1c0a0d048d00c9ebbbe5cce4da.htm

Ignore your 'mechanic' he is simply ignorant about Hyundai. My friend with their Lexus has been to dealer more times than I have - and I have owned 3 Hyundai.

What is that you are considering in the Genesis over the Lexus? I haven't driven the ES but it looks nice enough. I did a quick price check and it considerably more expensive comparably equipped.

Forget the gas mileage concern.. .do the math. Worse case is the V8 costs you $15-$20 more per month. The V8 gives so much more in return. The V8 is just a much nicer car than the V6 version....

thanks for your response. What i like about the Genesis is the fact that its not "vanilla" like a lex ES. Everybody doesn't have one. So its kind of unique. and the styling. i really like the style. i like the style of the Lex GS, Nissan Maxima, and Infiniti M series. And i always come back to the Genesis. Its just a damn good looking car. Someone in this post said people like me need to sh!t or get off the pot. probably true.

i just get freaked out when i hear things from my mechanic about Hyundai getting positive reviews b/c they spend so much money on marketing with car magazines, etc....

probably the most unbiased source of information is consumer reports, which rates genesis reliability as average to above average, though not as good as some Lexus models.

since you like the genesis styling, you should definitely go for it.
personally, i think the genesis styling is just ok, but i do love everything else about the car. the new Azera looks really good. you might wanna wait for that.

There are a few small differences, the V-8 gets light up door sills, electrochromic auto-dimming side mirors, wood on the steering wheel, chrome trim on lower doors, slightly larger front brake rotors, 1 gallon larger fuel tank, electro-hydraulic power steering and a different gear ratio.

Contrary to the very vocal V-8 contingent on the sight the V-6 is a great car and has very good power. Obviously the V-8 is as well and it comes down to personal preference just don't write off the V-6 without trying it first. The V-6 is about 50 horse less but is lighter (about 200 lbs worth) and has different gearing so the real world difference is less.

For me this is a daily commuter so mileage was important and I like the newer technology that the GDi offers. 333 Horsepower out of a 3.8L is just awesome to me.

OK, I did the math. I get about 25 MPG with my V-6 which is right about the middle of the EPA ratings 19/29. The actual middle is 24 so for simplicity I will use that. The V-8 is rated at 17/26 so I will use 21.5 for that. I have about a 43 mile (one way) commute so do roughly 2000 miles a month. This means 75 Gal. for the V-6 and 83.7 for the V-8, a difference 8.7 gallons.

8.7 X $3.00 = $26.10 extra fuel
75 x $0.10 = $7.50 premium vs regular
total $33.60

Not a huge difference but the fuel along with the added price of the car is at least $50 a month which is $600 a year which is now getting to be real money. (at least to me)

Also I don't see what about the V-8 is so much more. The car is marginally quicker but I have no issues merging onto I-80 on an uphill on ramp and getting up to 80 MPH before the end of the acceleration lane so the V-6 is not lacking for power. I don't care for the chrome trim on the lower door or the piece of wood on the steering wheel. I think the light up door sills would have been cool as well as the auto-dimming side mirrors but certainly nothing I can't live without.

I have a 37 mile commute and probably about 1800 miles/ month. I consistently get calculated (not displayed which is 2mpg optimistic) 24MPG with my 4.6

Not trying to start any argument over the V8 or V6... you and I drive a lot of miles but for the average 1000 miles month guy, they should not even factor in the cost of fuel in their decision. For me the fuel difference is negligible. I do use premium fuel but its not required.

When I bought my 2012 4.6 - I drove the V6 and it is fine, plenty of power. The difference maker for me was the V8 is smoother, quieter and the extra weigh just made car feel so much more composed. The V8 has a more luxury feel.

I completely agree. That is also the reason I got the V8.

your calculations are worse than a "worst case scenario" lol plus, there is NO reason why you have to run premium in the V8. none. are you taking the car for time trials at the track? whats the point. car is a rocket with regular in it.

Thanks so much shawn and others. this is great info and perspective. i guess i shouldn't write off the V8 without at least a test drive.

and i did look up the new Azera. looks nice, and comes with a bunch of great features standard, but the Genesis is still going to be the car for me.

thanks again!!!
