Startup and shutdown tones

I find the musical tones that sound every time the Genesis starts up and shuts down to be annoying. Passengers have commented that it seems kind of dumb. I assume that this is part of Hyundai's attempt to add some class to the car but, in my opinion, it's a bad move.

I asked my local service department if they could do it, but they said it wasn't possible because it's "programmed into the computer". While that may be the case, there still must be a simple module that actually generates the tones that can be removed. I've tried to find it, but I can't figure out exactly where in the dash that the sound is coming from. I fear that it may be buried deeply in the dash. Does anyone know of an easy way to disable those tones?

I assume that is something added in recent years since my 2009 has no such tones.

That's very interesting Pahaska. My Genesis is a 2012 4.6. I wasn't aware that this little musical tune was a new feature, but perhaps it explains why a search of this forum did not yield any other comments about it. There's got to be a simple way to defeat it, but my local Hyundai dealer really doesn't seem to know much about these cars. There are no Genesis cars in his lot and, to the best of my knowledge, my car is to the only 2012 Genesis they've ever seen. If there's a feature that's not working properly, they usually have to pull out my Owner's Manual to figure out what I'm talking about. It's kind of discouraging.

Thanks for the suggestion HomeofStone, but I have already studied my owners manual very thoroughly. There is no mention of the musical tones, and there does not appear to be any settings to defeat it.

My 2010 3.8 doesn't have any tones like you describe. My Samsung TV's and monitors do, though - maybe some Hyundai engineer got the idea there.

The start-up tone is one of my favorite parts of the car. Of course, I like having a dog that is happy to see me too. My passenger comments have been favorable too.

Interesting DeeVa. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Perhaps it will grow on me after a while, but it just seems strange for a car to play a little tune every time you shut it off or start it up.

2012 R-Spec here. I find the tones annoying and as far as I can tell there's no way to defeat them. Why they didn't make those part of the user-adjustable settings, I can't fathom.

I think the tones are one of those things that seem nice at first, but get very annoying if you live with them day in and day out. I guess chalk it up as something you can live with? To me these are the tradeoffs you make when you get a Hyundai as opposed to a Lexus/Acura and for me they are easily worth it. I agree though it should be user selectable.

I wish Hyundai would realize the brand loyalty they could engender with a few firmware/software updates to their infotainement systems after release. I would be much more likely to buy another Hyundai if they maintained that aspect of the care for say 5 years? Free maps and system upgrades for the life of the B2B warranty? I think that is a reasonable request and I think it'd be a hit among buyers...

It seems to me that the "musical tone" is to notify you that the proximity key is connected and the car is available in the start mode.

Although I would prefer to silence the little musical ditty, I do not consider it a deal-killer, and I can certainly live with it. And even though Hyundai has not offered us the option to silence it with software, I would think it could be silenced by simply removing the device that's generating those tones. The problem is that I don't where that device is located or how or access it. I suspected that there must be other people besides me who would would prefer not to hear the tones, and I thought someone on this forum smarter than me might have figured it out already.

But that wouldn't explain why the tones play again every time you shut down the engine.

I would imagine it's not a stand-alone device making the noise, but rather something programmed into the software of the infotainment center. I don't think the car would be as nice without that...

In all reality though I haven't ridden in a 2012, so maybe I'm mistaken.

Is the Genesis DIS the same as the Equus? I'm pretty certain I saw a menu option for the musical tones at startup and shutdown when I was scrolling through the menu choices one day on my 2011 Equus.

Personally, I like them and I've had positive passenger comments on them, too.

I can understand why others would like to eliminate them, though.

No, unfortunately it's not one of the choices on the Genesis DIS.

I was right. I just opened the drivers door, without my proximity key and guess what? No welcoming ring tone. Kind of miss it...will have to wait until the morning to hear the wonderful welcoming tone. Actually, I wish it were Beethoven's 5th!!!!

This is programmed to the OS of the main onboard computer and personally I don't think it can be disabled. It's cool though
