  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How many 2012 owners have complained about the transmission to Hyundai?

my wife made an interesting observation. When you floor the gas, the bottom is not where you think it should be. There is always more to go, at least for me. So after I hit what I think is WOT, there is just a little more room to push it further which forces a full down shift.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but it feels like the car is resisting wide open throttle.

on WOT ( wide open throttle )

My car has a serious hesitation - then SLAMS into gear - going from 8th gear to 5th gear - and I'm like

Other times - it downshifts - and then downshifts some more......

And I'm like

Hyundai would have been better off leaving the transmission to ZF

at least ZF know HOW to make a good transmission

and not this garbage we have now

After 12k I hear the tranny whining when cold. Very unhappy and will be getting it into service ASAP.

There's a guy on another thread who has had 3 trannys. He's got a 5.0 too. I'm curious...if this proves to be a trend with 5.0 owners....could it be the greater hp and torque is the cause? I'll keep an eye on my 4.6 but I only have 4300 miles and have been riding my bike more than driving the car.

I am approaching 11k and am not hearing anything weird from the tranny (3.8 here). Not quite sure what speed you need to be going to slam into 5th gear. I generally slam it into 3rd or 4th for passing. I think 4th is good for 75 at least.

It is possible that I just have gotten used to it and just drop it into manual a lot.

Just wanted to say that I noticed upshift issues from Day 1 with my 2012 3.8 (some downshift challenges too, but mostly it was the upshifting that was bugging me). I went yesterday to the dealership to have the campaign fix mentioned in an earlier post applied, and since then I have observed a significant improvement on the timing of the shifts.

Thank you for making me aware of the solution.

I test drove an R Spec the other day and it had the same tranny issues that everyone describes. Went out of town because another dealership was offering a better deal. Test drove that one and it drove totally different. I purchased that one yesterday. The tranny is silky smooth. Strange.

I just contacted my dealer asking about the campaign fix.. will keep you posted as to what happens.

The few times I've needed the full torque, I took it from 7-8th gear down to 3-4th in a matter of 1-2 second, then floored it and off I flew!!! Needed is perhaps an overstatement.. more like I wanted to have fun.

*****UPDATE*****
Cardinale Hyundai in Corona, Calfornia, are completely denying ever hearing of anyone having issues with the slow downshifting on the Genesis. When I referred to this forum, he became rather hostile and I ended up hanging up on him.

I have a 2012 3.8 with 30,000kms (18,750 miles) and while it shifts smoothly and I have no problem with it downshifting quickly, I have noticed lately that it clunks sometimes when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse. I mentioned this to the service department at the latest oil service and he had them check it out. The Tech confirmed the 'clunk' and opened a service file with Hyundai Canada. The dealer called today to tell me that they have been instructed by Hyundai to replace the transmission. They also advised that the transnmissions are on back-order and they would let me know when it came in. I guess that there must be a lot of 2012 tranny's being replaced.

I have not noticed any problems with my 3.8 after 1200 miles. It was manufactured June 1, 2101 so maybe something was changed in advance?:)

12,000 miles on mine, tranny shifts smooth up and down. 2 or 3 times I had the occasional hiccup where the tranny shifted rough, can't duplicate yet but I think it was a 7 to 3 shift. The jolt was similar to running something over.

Just got my 2012 3.8, it was made in June and the tranny AND AC seems really nice. I test drove 3 cars and remember now that one had a weak AC, maybe this has been improved in the recent months, tranny also. Just a guess.
I am pretty fussy for my main car is a 2010 Corvette Grand Sport 6 speed and I drive it pretty sporty. We really like the Genesis, fine car. I can just imagine how good the next Gen will be.

So I have had my R Spec for almost a month. The tranny has been smooth until last week. All of the sudden it is becoming choppy like everyone is talking about. I'm am wondering if a Sprint Booster will help these issues. I can't figure out how it just started doing this out of the blue.

Hey Newman, I'm so pleased that you enjoy your car. You deserve it.

037, I sold the Acura because it started doing at 4k miles what every Acura I've owned did...it started rattling.

I completely agree; been there done that.

I have a 2012 Genesis sedan 3.8 and I have had transmissions issues since last year.

Slow downshifting and brutal gear changing at times, especially going up from the 1st to 2nd speed and 2nd to 3rd (on automatic shifting)
I bought it in to the Hyundai Dealership in Charlotte NC to get looked at when it was still under manufacturer warranty in October 2016.
24 hours later they called and told me they couldn't duplicate the issue, therefore i had to go bring the loaner back and pick up my Genesis.

The car has had the same transmission issues every since, and i learned to live with it. This morning while stopping at a red light the engine start to stutter and shake, to the point that I thought It was going to shut off, the CHECK engine Light came on, I moved the gear to N and it went away... back to D and it shook again... i was able to bring the car to the closest Hyundai Dealership (at a low speed), where the service tech told me the car wasn't under warranty anymore (it had expired a week and a half ago), so any work and the rental car i was about to get will be on my dime.

Shouldn't the first dealership Service department be responsible? When i brought the car to them, the car was still under warranty

Warranty service is provided at any USA Hyundai dealership, regardless of where you purchased the car (so long as it was in the USA).

Since your car is no longer under warranty, but you brought it in under warranty and they refused to fix it, you should open a case directly with Hyundai Motor America.

Good luck opening a case with Hyundai. You might be successful. But why didn't you take the car back multiple times till they diagnosed the problem under warranty, rather than "living with it?"

Because I figured if they didn't want to fix it the first time, bringing it back multiple times would be useless?

Thanks Mark, i will open a case direct with HMA now.

As I mentioned above, if that ever happens again (on any vehicle you purchased), then take it to another dealer for warranty service, and if that doesn't work it should be escalated to the manufacturer. This is especially true of a transmission, which is extremely expensive to replace (Hyundai has been replacing them, not fixing them, on the other 2012's that had problems).
