clearances

My manual says to check valve clearances on the 3.8 every 2 years or 48Km. I know what this means, but does anyone know if it's really necessary on the 3.8 and how "big a deal" is it (how complex and how expensive). Don't want to spend unnecessarily:confused: thanks
