What does the ECM update do to the 4.6 v8? Took the car in for a Navi update and the brake switch recall...the service tech said I also needed an ECM update...why?

I took my car in yesterday and the Brake Fluid changed per the TSB. They also said I needed an ECM update. I asked what that was for and they honestly didn't know. Anyone here know what the ECM update was for?
