folding mirrors

My passenger's side mirror will not open. The driver's side mirror is fine.. I understand it is the gear inside but cannot locate just the gear itself. All sources tell me that I can only buy the entire assembly. Anyone have information on if and where I can purchase only the gear?

I have just encountered this on Saturday. I went into a restaurant and when I came back, my driver side mirror was already unfolded and was making a whirring noise, like the motor could not catch whatever the mirror uses to fold. Has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you fix it?
