With the Genesis ticking past 11000 miles, I thought this would be a great time to give a nice update on the car.
- Run's PERFECT. No squeaks/rattles/undue sounds from the car whatsoever. Everything is still super tight, and everything lines up perfectly.
- The engine seems to have gotten a tad stronger, though this is based on my butt dyno. Tranny continues to shift like silk.
- Engine oil changed at ~7500 miles. I should have written a little DIY for everyone on here, but I was all soaked in oil by the time I thought to get a camera and snap some pics. HOWEVER some notables include the EXCELLENT thought put into making this car maintenance friendly – there’s a small slot in the undertray to access the oil drain bolt. The oil filter is within easy reach right under the engine cover (which btw, has an arrow pointing to the filter!). The engine cover pops off by tugging it, which is just fantastic – on some of my vehicles, you have to bust out a ratchet and unbolt the cover. The only thing that held up progress for me is that I lacked the whopping 28mm socket that is needed to take the cap of the oil filter canister! I also loved the fact that the new filter I bought from Hyundai came with new seals and also a new washer for the drain plug – believe or not, with our Honda, I have to pay extra for the washer! About the only thing that was annoying was replacing the smaller seal on the end of the oil filter spindle – I eventually used a very small flathead to pry it out – now that I know how to, I’m sure it will make the process even easier. Btw, it takes ~5.3 qts (V6). Cliffnotes: Out of all the cars I’ve owned/own the Genesis is the easiest by far to change the oil on.
- Ride/Handling balance is phenomenal. This thing would give my S2000 a run for its money in steady state cornering! There’s a perfectly 540 degree ramp close to work that I conducted some unofficial testing on. Its marked as 25mph. In the S2k, I hit approx. 63mph. With the Genesis, I was nudging 59, and it had more left in it! For comparison, I could only take it at 54mph in a G35 Coupe, and 48mph in an ES350 (which squealed to high heaven).
- Having driven my friend’s ES350 extensively (~1500 miles) before and especially after purchasing the Genesis. UNBELIEVEABLY, the Genesis feels far more solid, more luxurious, better equipped, and infinitely more spacious. I had always felt the ES350 was a very spacious vehicle, but after Genesis ownership, the ES350 actually felt small and cramped in the back! FURTHERMORE – I borrowed the ES for a few days whilst a family member was over – he’s a very “traditionally” mind individual in that he believes only MB, BMW, Audi, Lexus, etc. make “real” luxury cars. After riding in the ES for approx. 3 days around and about town, we stepped into the Genesis. His response – the Genesis felt far superior to him in every manner.
-High speed stability is not as Germanic as the best of them at 115mph +. But it is still very good.
-Car is more susceptible to movement in heavy wind than the average vehicle which I thought was odd.
-Ride over sharp expansion joints can cause the car to jounce a little more than some of the tauter German counterparts, but to claim that it feels anything close to “dangerous” (as some have on this forum) is laughable. It called TIRE PRESSURE folks – check it. Taking a pound of two out seemed to make a noticeable difference, reducing the amount of jounce. As I said, nothing untoward, and definitely better/equal to most of the competition.
-Sound system is just unbelieveable. Nothing sounds good anymore. I find myself turning off the stereos in my other vehicles because I’ve been spoiled by the Lexicon masterpiece in the Genesis. Unbelievable.
-At 80-82 mph cruise, I’m seeing 26 +/- 0.5mpg in the winter (bought the car in mid Oct. so I have no idea what it’ll do in the summer). I imagine that it should easily do 27.xx mph @ 80mph cruise in the summer.
-Cargo tray is awesome. I easily fit 3 18” snow tires in the trunk, but couldn’t quite get the 4th to fit!
-Bluetooth is astoundingly brilliant. So easy to use, so effective.
-Voice recognition is THE best in the industry. I’ve used Acura, Lexus (traditionally known for being the best), and the Hyundai is better. Let me put it this way – instead of being a novelty as it has been in other vehicles, I religiously use voice recognition in the Genesis, especially voice dialing by name.
-LED lighting is AMAZING. No other car’s lighting ever feels as good.
Cons/Improvements:
-Car “growls” when cold started in sub freezing temps. Typical lifter noise. I found that using 0W-20 Mobil1 Full Synthetic (which complies with 5W-20 warranty requirements) helped quite a bit, and the motor runs butter smooth.
-Rev-matched downshifts on the Aisin 6sp would be nice, although to be honest, the downshifts as are, are nowhere near harsh.
-LSD would be nice – might improve winter traction
-Speaker cover in the trunk – moot point since this has been addressed. However, I definitely think Hyundai should upgrade existing vehicles with the cover if they don’t already have it. I plan to do this and will let you know how it goes.
Many say this but I HONESTLY could not be HAPPIER with my purchase. It is a PHENOMENAL car that is ENGINEERED to the highest standards imagineable. Don’t believe me, look at:
-the fender liner – a felt like material probably used for better sound deadening
-the panel gaps. You literally couldn’t fit a piece of paper between the rear bumper and the quarter panel.
-The foam insulation in the frame/door hinge area.
-The tight fit of all interior pieces, and the lack of hard plastics in the interior.
-Higher torsional rigidity than any car in its segment. Reflected in the best safety figures in the segment.
OK, I’ll stop. Seriously, this is an amazing car. Oh, and I work as an engineer in the automotive industry btw, so I feel as if my observations as somewhat well qualified.
11k miles and nothing but pure pleasure. Might I add that these 11k miles came in 2.5 months! Yes, its that good. Some of the other vehicles in the stable have been collecting dust as a result. Hope this was helpful to those considering a purchase and those that are enjoying Genesis ownership alike! Sorry for being too verbose but there were too many good things to say.
I genuinely hope Hyundai succeeds beyond their dreams with this vehicle. Judging by the accolades that seem to rack up by the day, they are well on their way.
