With the Genesis ticking past 11000 miles, I thought this would be a great time to give a nice update on the car.

- Run's PERFECT. No squeaks/rattles/undue sounds from the car whatsoever. Everything is still super tight, and everything lines up perfectly.
- The engine seems to have gotten a tad stronger, though this is based on my butt dyno. Tranny continues to shift like silk.
- Engine oil changed at ~7500 miles. I should have written a little DIY for everyone on here, but I was all soaked in oil by the time I thought to get a camera and snap some pics. HOWEVER some notables include the EXCELLENT thought put into making this car maintenance friendly – there’s a small slot in the undertray to access the oil drain bolt. The oil filter is within easy reach right under the engine cover (which btw, has an arrow pointing to the filter!). The engine cover pops off by tugging it, which is just fantastic – on some of my vehicles, you have to bust out a ratchet and unbolt the cover. The only thing that held up progress for me is that I lacked the whopping 28mm socket that is needed to take the cap of the oil filter canister! I also loved the fact that the new filter I bought from Hyundai came with new seals and also a new washer for the drain plug – believe or not, with our Honda, I have to pay extra for the washer! About the only thing that was annoying was replacing the smaller seal on the end of the oil filter spindle – I eventually used a very small flathead to pry it out – now that I know how to, I’m sure it will make the process even easier. Btw, it takes ~5.3 qts (V6). Cliffnotes: Out of all the cars I’ve owned/own the Genesis is the easiest by far to change the oil on.
- Ride/Handling balance is phenomenal. This thing would give my S2000 a run for its money in steady state cornering! There’s a perfectly 540 degree ramp close to work that I conducted some unofficial testing on. Its marked as 25mph. In the S2k, I hit approx. 63mph. With the Genesis, I was nudging 59, and it had more left in it! For comparison, I could only take it at 54mph in a G35 Coupe, and 48mph in an ES350 (which squealed to high heaven).
- Having driven my friend’s ES350 extensively (~1500 miles) before and especially after purchasing the Genesis. UNBELIEVEABLY, the Genesis feels far more solid, more luxurious, better equipped, and infinitely more spacious. I had always felt the ES350 was a very spacious vehicle, but after Genesis ownership, the ES350 actually felt small and cramped in the back! FURTHERMORE – I borrowed the ES for a few days whilst a family member was over – he’s a very “traditionally” mind individual in that he believes only MB, BMW, Audi, Lexus, etc. make “real” luxury cars. After riding in the ES for approx. 3 days around and about town, we stepped into the Genesis. His response – the Genesis felt far superior to him in every manner.
-High speed stability is not as Germanic as the best of them at 115mph +. But it is still very good.
-Car is more susceptible to movement in heavy wind than the average vehicle which I thought was odd.
-Ride over sharp expansion joints can cause the car to jounce a little more than some of the tauter German counterparts, but to claim that it feels anything close to “dangerous” (as some have on this forum) is laughable. It called TIRE PRESSURE folks – check it. Taking a pound of two out seemed to make a noticeable difference, reducing the amount of jounce. As I said, nothing untoward, and definitely better/equal to most of the competition.
-Sound system is just unbelieveable. Nothing sounds good anymore. I find myself turning off the stereos in my other vehicles because I’ve been spoiled by the Lexicon masterpiece in the Genesis. Unbelievable.
-At 80-82 mph cruise, I’m seeing 26 +/- 0.5mpg in the winter (bought the car in mid Oct. so I have no idea what it’ll do in the summer). I imagine that it should easily do 27.xx mph @ 80mph cruise in the summer.
-Cargo tray is awesome. I easily fit 3 18” snow tires in the trunk, but couldn’t quite get the 4th to fit!
-Bluetooth is astoundingly brilliant. So easy to use, so effective.
-Voice recognition is THE best in the industry. I’ve used Acura, Lexus (traditionally known for being the best), and the Hyundai is better. Let me put it this way – instead of being a novelty as it has been in other vehicles, I religiously use voice recognition in the Genesis, especially voice dialing by name.
-LED lighting is AMAZING. No other car’s lighting ever feels as good.

Cons/Improvements:
-Car “growls” when cold started in sub freezing temps. Typical lifter noise. I found that using 0W-20 Mobil1 Full Synthetic (which complies with 5W-20 warranty requirements) helped quite a bit, and the motor runs butter smooth.
-Rev-matched downshifts on the Aisin 6sp would be nice, although to be honest, the downshifts as are, are nowhere near harsh.
-LSD would be nice – might improve winter traction
-Speaker cover in the trunk – moot point since this has been addressed. However, I definitely think Hyundai should upgrade existing vehicles with the cover if they don’t already have it. I plan to do this and will let you know how it goes.

Many say this but I HONESTLY could not be HAPPIER with my purchase. It is a PHENOMENAL car that is ENGINEERED to the highest standards imagineable. Don’t believe me, look at:

-the fender liner – a felt like material probably used for better sound deadening
-the panel gaps. You literally couldn’t fit a piece of paper between the rear bumper and the quarter panel.
-The foam insulation in the frame/door hinge area.
-The tight fit of all interior pieces, and the lack of hard plastics in the interior.
-Higher torsional rigidity than any car in its segment. Reflected in the best safety figures in the segment.

OK, I’ll stop. Seriously, this is an amazing car. Oh, and I work as an engineer in the automotive industry btw, so I feel as if my observations as somewhat well qualified.

11k miles and nothing but pure pleasure. Might I add that these 11k miles came in 2.5 months! Yes, its that good. Some of the other vehicles in the stable have been collecting dust as a result. Hope this was helpful to those considering a purchase and those that are enjoying Genesis ownership alike! Sorry for being too verbose but there were too many good things to say.

I genuinely hope Hyundai succeeds beyond their dreams with this vehicle. Judging by the accolades that seem to rack up by the day, they are well on their way.

AMEN!

Thanks so much for your review! I enjoyed every word!

Nice review. Very helpful info on the oil change. Anyone know if the oil filter is the same on the 4.6? Do you need the same 28mm socket?

Nope, on the 4.6 the filter is located at the bottom of the engine, next to the oil pan. There's another thread about this on the site.

Vishnus11: I could not agree more with you - only if I had written the above. I owned Two BMW 5 Series before an Audi A6 and so on and I have never been so in love with a car like this. I find myself checking the car when I drive by a store with big windows, I think I need psychiatric help. My Genesis is Black/Saddle w. Tech pck., with the "Wing" emblem on trunk and hubcabs.

Thanks for re-affirming that I am no the only one who love his Genesis.

What a great review. I only have 1,500 miles on mine, but I feel the same way about the Genesis. Mine is a 4.6 V-8 black with black interior and the tech package.

Great write-up!! I second your point on the wind. There is another thread here dealing with pull to the left/right. Some, like me, had attributed it to hypersensitivity to road crown. My car has performed as yours, ZERO problems. However, on my recent 1800 mile trip I did see a little pull to the left. A few hundred miles later a little pull to the right. (all interstate) Then it hit me, I had been driving through one of those East coast weather fronts and the wind had shifted. We're talkin' breeze here, not gusts. After your comments (and background), I'm thinking in addition to road crown we have a pretty high sensitivity to side wind loading and THAT is what is causing the percieved pull to the right/left. Others with this issue chime in here and see if this makes sense.

Yeah, I know where the filter is, my question is whether it requires the same socket to remove it.

Thank you for the great update / review! This will definitely help me in deciding my next new vehicle purchase.

Please don't forget to do more of these updates in near future! :D

Glad to hear it's treating you so well. I'd like to echo 99% of your positive comments, but I will say that I have a rattle somewhere in my headliner/sunroof area that began a few weeks ago and is driving me crazy. :(

On a side note, you drive a lot! I was the first Genesis owner to register on here (purchased 6/27/08), yet I have only 5k miles. Maybe I need to drive my Gen more! :)

That was a pleasurable read. Thanks for the update!! Maybe I was wrong about the "First model year, first problems" .

Anyone got a similar write-up for the 4.6?

Generally you are correct, but I know Honda and Toyota don't release a car to the US until it has been on Japanese market for at least a year. My impression is that Genesis was available in Korea before the US (although slightly different specs). Also, given what Hyundai has riding on the Genesis (the launch of their luxury line in the US), one would hope they made sure it was solid before being available for sale in the US, and that they will stand behind the product.

One of the best personal reviews I have read in a long time. Thanks so much for taking time to share your thoughts. Every day I log onto this site and read what some of you are saying, the more comfortable I feel with my purchase. Makes the Excel days seem like generations ago! Now if only I can stay home enough to drive the car! Thanks again!

"Butt dyno" ? I like that term, I think I have one of those too ;)

Very nice and reassuring to see a detailed report after significant mileage. Thank you

JWaters:
Last night I heard a "rattle" from what seemed to be the sunroof, back right. I chalked it up to ice on the sunroof, no big deal since it was the first time I'd heard ANY noise in 1,400 miles. But when I got home I glanced at it and saw that the seal running the width of the rear sunroof had 2 "crimps" on the right half. The left half was perfectly fit/flush. Maybe these crimps, in the right conditions (wind, ice, extreme cold?) cause the rattle? Fwiw, after the ice melted in the garage over night, there was no rattle this morning. Anyway, take a look just in case. I'll ask my Gen tech to check it at my 1st oil change.

I kind of have a hard time to believe the 3.6 Genesis sedan corners better than the g35. Even the Hyundai guys says it was inspired by the Infiniti M and well see yourself.

Thanks for the update. I've put almost 3,000 miles in 16 days myself, and my car is impressing me even beyond my wildest imaginations.

Glad to know that oil changes will be easy. I still haven't figured out how to take the engine cover off, but I'll try again. Thanks for the 28mm socket info.

Most people around me would still buy the Lexus ES350 over the Genesis, because of the Lexus name. After all, this is Los Angeles, where you are what you drive, and that hood ornament (Lexus L, BMW roundel, Mercedes star) really matters. But to me, the engineering matters more than the brand name; I just gave up a BMW, which I had bought only because of the handling (which I ended up never needing), not because of the BMW roundel.

The ES is a fine car, but it drives like a Camry (which it really is). If I wanted the ES, I'd have taken a loaded Camry and saved a bundle instead. Or check the Hyundai store anyway and take the Azera, which, like the ES, is a well-equipped sleepy front-driver - for thousands less.
