  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

'15/'16/'17 Tech vs. '18 Tech: Did it improve or get tweaked at all?

I'm debating between one of the older models with the 8" screen (supporting Apple Carplay/Android Auto) vs. a '18 with the 8" or 9" screen (both of which support Apple Carplay/Android Auto). The price difference is a bit substantial but possibly worth the extra cost if Genesis improved the actual tech at all.
  1. Is the software itself any faster, smoother, more fluid when booting up, navigating the menus, app fluidity (AA/AC including Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, etc).?
  2. Did the safety tech (i.e. lane keep assist, smart cruise control) get improvement tweaks at all? In this thread, people mentioned having to load OpenPilot for the '15/'16 semi-self driving tech to work correctly.
  3. Did they increase the resolution of the rear view camera at all?
  4. Bizarre question but how does the G80's tech compare to Hyundais? Some family members got a Hyundai Palisade and its tech is SWEET; it's the same tech Hyundai is rolling out the new 2020 Sonata I believe.
Thanks in advance!

I don't use AA or CP so can't help there.
One of the biggest changes that I really like is the surround view of the camera. Navigation is a bit better but all have had some updates so I can only compare to my old 2015, not an updated one.

@Comp625 I went from a 16 to 18 Sport. Here are my observations:
  1. The interface does not feel snappier or more fluid, it feels the same with the exception that android auto and applecar play work now.
  2. I actully feel the lane centering got worse, I am waiting to find a type I connector to connect my EON and see if openpilot is better.
  3. No resolution on cameras, and i find this vehicles 360 surround view to be poor, it feels like it was thrown together last minute and the alignment is not as accurate as other manufacturers.
  4. The new palliside and Sonata have newer tech, we won't see it on Genesis until the model refresh.
  5. The lexicon sound system sounds terrible when compared to the one on the Hyundai branded 15/16. The system distorts as you turn it past 30 (this wasn't the case with the other ones). There is a lack of bass, it was better on the other models. Lastly this is a big problem, had I really paid attention to this I may have not upgraded there is a "sibilance" to the sound. It accents tweeter heavily and is ear pearcing. You can find some threads on here and googling it will pull up some videos. Lexicon sound system with Harsh S ( Sibiliance) in my new Genesis G80 Ultimate

Thank you so much for the detailed reply.
  1. Is the software literally the same across the 15/16/17 vs 18+ models?
  2. How about the smart cruise control? Does it stop and restart from 0mph? Did you feel if that got worse in the '18 as well? Can anyone else comment if their safety semi-self driving tech is worse in the '18 vs 15/16/17?
  3. That's really unfortunate to hear. Can anyone else comment if their 360 camera is also subpar?
  4. It's crazy how Hyundai put better tech into their everyday lineup.
  5. Damn, that's awful to hear about the high pitched sibilance. I'm an audiophile and the ear piercing noise will totally bother me.
  6. In the '18, did they fix the supposed panoramic sunroof creaking that people on here mentioned was common in the '15 and '16?
Based on this thread alone, it seems I should look for a '16 MY instead of spending extra on the '18 MY. Would anyone else agree? Is there anything tech-related that should sway me back to the '18?

Andriod Auto / Apple CarPlay on '18. Plus it'll be a Genesis rather than a Hyundai. :-)

Yeah but I can get AA/AC on the lower '16 MY trims. AA/AC was only missing on the 15/16/17 Ultimate trim (with the DIS jog wheel).

Eh, the branding isn't too big a deal for me. Apparently many '15/'16 owners swapped out the Hyundai badge for the Genesis badge.

There are a lot of conclusions here that are based on personal opinion. Why don’t you start by test driving a 19 (should be the same as the 18 and easier to find) and see what you think for yourself.

Depends on how important that is to you. I don't use AA but I sure like the extra goodies in the Ultimate. I'd miss the HUD, the larger screen. etc. I really like the surround view on the camera on the 18. Many of your questions come down to personal choice.

It sure does! I drive this way most of the time. Get the G80 to the posted speed, set and go until coming to a traffic control light and when it turns green, press the resume button and it's back to the set speed to get my Annie her Mocha. My LKA is nothing to write home about; doesn't work well here; poor paint on the lanes? The HUD, very nice, what I thought was a gimmick before I tried it, turned out to a very BIG PLUS!
If you're anything like me, you'll need the decoder:
HUD Heads Up Display
LKA Lane Keeping Assist
ADC Adaptive Cruise Control
