  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I would like someone who owns a 2010 4.6 to check something in their Owners Manual (Service Section). I was told today that the 2010 says to "Flush the transmission fluid at 60,000 miles". The 2009 only says to inspect the transmission fluid, nothing said about changing or flushing.

If this is true, this is going to cost an "arm and a leg" due to the Hyundai 1375.4 fluid costing around $75.00 a quart, taking 9 quarts. Again, if this is true, IS HYUNDAI CRAZY? With the Hyundai 1375.4 fluid and labor, the cost will be over $850. (The same fluid from BMW costs around $50.00 a quart, or more exact, $25.00 a HALF QUART [one pint]). The employee I spoke with is looking for a less expencive fluid. (AmsOil, Mobil-1, Amalie, Wolfs Head, etc).

Let us know what your manual says.

I had a look at the manual on HMAService.com, and the Normal Maintenance Schedule says to inspect the Automatic Transmission Fluid every 37,500 miles (60,000 km), or 48 months. Right above it in the table is the coolant which is replaced at the 60,000 miles the first time, then every 30,000 mi. after.

That should clear that up

I concur with Davidtlc. The service is that same 2009-2010. Don't worry about it, you're never going to have to change the tranny oil, unless the thing craps out on you.

OK, thanks. He may have been reading the Coolant service , thinking it was the Transmission service.

I will tell him to re-read his book.

You're right, the coolant service is just above the transmission service.

Visited my dealer yesterday, and we checked the 2009 and 2010 owners manuals side by side. Yes, there is a difference between the two manuals.

The 2010 Owners Manual, Page 7-9 says to Inspect the ATF at 37500 miles. The 2009 does not say this.

The 2010 Owners Manual, Page 7-11 (Severe Usage) Says to CHANGE the ATF at 60,000miles. The 2009 does not say this.

My Service Writer was correct. This is why I like this Service Department so much. He phoned Hyundai to ask about it, and Hyundai (probably in California) was snowed by his questions, wanting to know how can he justify an ATF change when the Hyundai Fluid coast around $75. a quart (getting it from BMW, it still costs $25. a PINT). I gave him information that the fluid can be purchased from ZF (Lifeguardfluid 6) in quarts, 20Liters or Drums, don't know the cost, from Castrol (Castrol Import Synthetic ATF) don't know the cost, From Amalie and Wolfs Head (Universal Synthetic ATF) costs about $5.00 a quart, and from RedLine (D6ATF) costs about $11.00 a quart. All of the above meet the M-1375.4 Spec for this ZF Transmission. Many cars use this transmission. Some BMW's, Jaguar XJ8"s, Land Rovers, etc.

Dealer will not use anything without prior authorization from Hyundai, if and when he has to do a transmission flush. Service writer said that flushing with Hyundai fluid (75. a quart) would cost the customer around $850 to get the transmission serviced.

Not listed in my 2009 manual, so at 60k, I'll just get it inspected.

Cheers

SEVERE DRIVING CONDITIONS
A - Repeatedly driving short distance of less than 5 miles (8 km) in normal
temperature or less than 10 miles (16 km) in freezing temperature
C - Driving on rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled or salt- spread roads
D - Driving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather
E - Driving in sandy areas
F - Driving in heavy traffic area over 90°F (32°C)
G - Driving on uphill, downhill, or mountain road
H - Towing a Trailer, or using a camper, or roof rack
I - Driving as a patrol car, taxi, other commercial use or vehicle towing

If you really believe you fall under these conditions then by all means have your tran oil changed. It's a judgment call.

I guess this comes down to how long you intend to keep/drive this vehicle. If 100K miles on the transmission, change the fluid at 60K. If the goal is for 200K miles, changing the transmission fluid is a good idea. I don't think any transmission is fine with no fluid change. Sure, it may last as long as you use the car but my guess is that changing fluid does make transmission last longer.
