  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Looking to purchase a 4.6L soon and I am stuck between a 2012 with 140,000 miles versus a 2010 with 120,000 miles. Both seem to be upkept well throughout the years. What would you recommend??

My 2012 4.6 with 133,000 miles on it has developed several problems. Some things to look out for.

First, the electronics have gotten pretty sketchy. The power windows will sometimes just stop working and later they will work fine. The power door lock on the driver's door doesn't always actually lock and unlock, although the other three doors work fine. The power folding mirrors stopped working a long time ago and make a grinding sound if you push the button to fold them. And the mirrors themselves are loose on the mounts. The central control knob on the console between the seats sometimes doesn't work at all, but if you press and twist on it, it will start working again.

Second, the engine has developed a groaning sound at lower rpms upon acceleration, about which I am going to make a separate post. The car runs okay, but the groaning is concerning.

Also need to know the build date on the 2012. Some of the early 2012's had a prototype piston ring that was defective, so they burn lots of oil.

That was a 5.0 issue, not a 4.6 issue.

Go with the 2012.

2010's had more issues with electrics (limit switches in seats and tilt steering) and electronics (head unit failures).

Just understand that you're buying a 9 year old car with LOTS of gizmos that can and will eventually fail. These cars are very cheap to buy, but very expensive to fix at the dealer. New OEM parts are single source monopoly from Korea, or ebay/copart/junkyard for used parts (which is fine in many cases).

If you have a GOOD local mechanic that knows Hyundai and has the tools, go for it. Or just expect to dump a few thousand into it every few years for big ticket repairs at the dealer.
