After doing (what I think was) a very thorough search and coming up with only one lead that turned to a dead end I am reading out to you guys. The stock HID's on this car are abysmal but I would like to retain the OEM functionality of the AFS system.
I've come down to two options. The first, and my preference would be to simply do performance modifications on the stock projector. I remember a while back reading a post by the member jnc2000 about his work with a TSX-R lens on these projectors but his inbox was full and I could not ask him for details. I am mostly curious about whats involved in the the process of removing the projector from the AFS system, and then putting it back into the main housing after tuning.
These projectors look to have an OEM semi curved, albeit thick cutoff shield. If I got ahold of a spare set of lens/shield housing I could possibly grind down the already existing shield and create a new curved shield for improved cutoff and color flicker with (just maybeee) better intensity along the cutoff across the beam. These modifications paired with a Xenarc CBI should produce something adequate. I just really miss the color and cutoff of my previous retrofit. Though, to save myself the trouble, if a new bulb and lens make the color and cutoff acceptable I would skip the shield modification because that would be a lot of extra work for disproportionately low gains.

The second option is to go full HAM and mutilate a set of OEM halogens. I also have a few questions with this option as well, mostly with wiring. Going this route I have decided that it would be most efficient to remove the stock halogen and place a bi-xenon and retrofit friendly offering like the 2.5" FX-R. Mounting doesn't concern me, from what I understand from pictures I have found on ebay the halogen projector looks to unbolt right out. With a little love and a lot of JB Weld the FX will go in anything. My first concern is the stock wiring. Does anyone know if the actual connection between the car and the housing is identical across the Genesis trims? e.g. If one were to plug an HID housing into the wiring from a non-tech genesis would everything (including the AFS system) work?
If they are identical, then I imagine I would be able to simply convert the H11 plug inside the halogen housing to a 9006 plug to go directly into a D2S ballast to power the bulb. It looked like there was space in there for me to "creatively" stuff a ballast. Then, I could just splice a new pigtail onto the high beam lines and run them to the solenoid to have Bi-xenon functionality while retaining the function of the halogen high beam bulb (replaced to match the kelvin of the HID as close as possibly, naturally).
I'm a psychologist, so even this rudimentary electrical work is pretty foreign to me. Anyone with technical knowledge see any red flags coming up from this idea?
Also, for anyone that has played with their halogens, can they explain to me how the headlight leveling works in those? In photos I have seen what looks like a rotating assembly on the outside of the housing, but I couldn't tell if it was electric or manual. If thats the case, I would have to either get creative with how I mounted the FX to retain the vertical leveling system, or I would have to mount the projectors on the car, wall mark, and do it the old fashioned way. Horizontal I don't think would be an issue.
I have a set of Mini H1's laying around that I was planning on foreground limiting, creating a custom flat shield, and mounting them into my fogs, but I would feel almost silly having a sharper cutoff on my fog lights than my low beams. The idea of still retaining the high beam functionality on those through some clever wiring has me dreaming of the potential for 12,000+ lumen high beam glory, for all those non-lit wilderness roads and mountain passes that I go through in the city every day. Money is tight as I am a grad student on a budget, but these questions have been swirling in my head and I really want to know whats feasible. The fogs would be the cheapest option to start, so that might be my first place to get my retrofit fix simply from the lower cost of the housings and relays and already having projectors and ballasts on hand.
I apologize for writing a book, I usually get nervous about posting to a new forum so I've been formulating my retrofit plans for a while. Trying to create a priority hierarchy of suspension, exhaust, wheels, and wonderful lights is really difficult.
Any information will help! Thanks.
