  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anyone know anything about the recall on the Sonata? It has something to do with the doors, or door handles?

Hyundai stops 2011 Sonata sales due to lock issue (e)

Hyundai Motor Co said on Tuesday it had stopped US sales of its 2011
Sonata sedan due to potential faults in the front door latches that
could affect 5,000 vehicles. Hyundai, which received complaints from
customers but no reports of accidents or injuries, notified dealers late
on Monday and the stop-sale order was put into affect at US dealers on
Tuesday, spokesman Miles Johnson said. The automaker expects to notify
the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration this week of the
possible defect, he said. NHTSA likely will look on it as requiring a
formal safety recall because it involves door latches, he said. Hyundai
already has started to ship replacement parts to its dealers and expects
the repairs if necessary to take about an hour, Johnson said. Dealers
will start to receive the replacement parts on Wednesday allowing them
to effectively lift the sales halt as soon as the cars are repaired, he
said. About 1,300 of the cars were sold to customers and they will be
notified by mail. The cars were built from December through Feb. 14 at
Hyundai's plant in Alabama when the carmaker began using a different
latch. Essentially, the front door locks could fail to return to a
stowed position after being opened, keeping the door from closing and
resulting in a warning light illuminating on the dashboard, he said.
Hyundai has been one of the stronger performers in the US auto sector in
recent years, gaining market share and logging an 8.3% sales increase in
2009, while the industry fell 21% overall to the lowest levels since the
early 1980s.The Sonata comprised about 37% of Hyundai's US car sales
last year.

OK, thanks for the information.

The reason I ask is that while at my dealer yesterday (Friday), a customer who purchased his car on either tuesday or wednesday (not sure which) was picking up his car on friday. His sales person brought out the car for him to drive away, when one of the managers came out and said that he could not take the car due to the recall, and would have to return on monday to pick it up. The customer was ANGRY. Said that the sales staff had pressured him to take the car back on tuesday or wednesday, but he did not want to be pressured into taking it before his loan had been approved. (smart). They gave him a loaner of a 2010 Sonata until he picks up the 2011 on monday. (The F&I Guy did presure him into buying "Gap Insurance" though).

Just goes to show you that no matter how good a Service or Parts Department is, the Sales Department could be run by crooks, to say it mildly.

I still have not driven a 2011 Sonata, but once they get either an SE jor Limited with the DVD Navi, I will take one out for a ride. The SE has the "Sport Suspension" and because I already have a stiff suspension in my Genesis, don't know if I could hack the stiff suspension of the SE, although I know I would like the looks of the duel exausts. Also don't need the paddle shifters, as my wife would be driving it most often.
The Limited does not look as nice from the back, but has other features, like moonroof, etc, plus the select shift is on the shift knob, so it could still be driven sporty.
