Bought my car in 2015 with 35,000 miles on it. It's now got 74,000 and my car had been losing some fuel economy and feeling terrible (Letting off the accelerator felt like braking). I referenced my invoices from Hyundai and found that they have been putting 5w20 in, but the engine oil cap and the owner's manual both say 5w30. Other years/engine sizes can apparently use 5w20, but the 2012 owner's manual says that for a 3.8L, use 5w30/10w30, and using the wrong oil can decrease fuel economy and cause engine damage.
Edit: I've taken the car to other places for service over the years so it's been going back and forth from 5w30 to 5w20.
Dealership agreed to correct the oil and the car really feels better already. I have a follow up appointment to look at the oil pan (There's a magnet in there that catches metal, right?) and I suggested/requested that they do an engine compression test. I have a case number from Hyundai Motor America, but they just point back to dealerships as the best course of action. The dealership I've been going to doesn't know what else to test or replace. What sort of things should be tested/replaced? I use my tiptronic shifter a lot by the way...
Quick Rant; don't read: Doesn't seem like many people think it's a big deal, but I've felt the negative affects first hand. Don't use lower than recommended viscosity for this car. It is like I trusted grandma and grandpa to take my child on vacation and they fed him McDonalds the whole time and now my kid has a medical condition... I bet dealerships wish cars were more like cell phones - :"Wow that car is over a year old! You should trade it in and we'll wrap your old car up in a nice warranty and sell it again as someone else's upgrade!"
