  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Last weekend I was merging on a ramp trying to accelerate very rapidly to merge into heavy traffic. I was in full automatic mode (not manual upshifting) and when I nailed it, the tranny (or other issue) would not upshift for 3-4 seconds. Kind of just bogged down. I rapidly threw it into manual mode to save my ass, but now I am a bit worried I could have a issue. There is never an issue under normal acceleration when I gradually pick up speed, but when I needed the car to “get with it” the shifting did not occur. Anybody have any similar problems and/or suggested remedies? Manual mode works fine, but it is obviously not nearly as quick as current current dual-clutch or similar. Thanks so much!

PS I have a great/trustworthy mechanic but wanted inputs before I take it in

Common issue with our cars. It's normal, not ok, especially at times when you need instant acceleration but totally normal.

that's the achilles heel of our car.

a sprint booster will help.

Slow shifting is different from no shifting. Our cars are luxo barges not performance cars so slow shifts are indeed quite normal. However, I've never had a problem with the WOT kickdown failing in my two cars ('09 4.6 and '12 4.6).

Here's a theory; I don't know for sure so this is pure speculation...

You might look to see if the "kickdown switch" is virtual or physical on your car. If it's physical, you might try replacing the pedal assembly. Hyundai has had occasional problems with limit and other momentary switches failing intermittently over the years (tilt steering, power seats, and the brake pedal switch recall). And I helped my daughter replace a fuel door release switch on her '07 Sanda Fe a few weeks ago. So I wouldn't be surprised that a physical kickdown switch could also fail in similar way (if it physically exists).

the Rspec is supposed to be performance oriented.

the Rspec is supposed to be performance oriented.

"supposed" <-- operative word.

So yeah it has bigger rims (19" vs 18"), lower & firmer suspension, bigger engine than the 4.6, bigger front brake discs, stiffer springs and dampers ... so yeah somewhat more performance oriented to get you around corners, perhaps. But Trans, Diff, cooling, tuning and weight ... still luxobarge. There's also no "sport mode" as I recall in the Rspec that would change the drivetrain to higher performance settings (throttle mapping, trans shift points & clutch engagement speed/pump pressure, shorter diff gearing, etc.) than for example the non-R 5.0 or 4.6 in 2012.

One thing I've noticed recently after putting some 93 octane in the tank is much more spirited response (and torque) from the engine. And I'm getting 21.8 mpg vs. my normal 18. Car has 80k miles. Might be my right foot, but my Genny is my DD and my butt dyno never lies (really, honest!). Maybe it's cleaned up a bit with the 93 after a few years of steady 87 use. So if you're not getting what you want out of the car, try a tank or two of premium.

PS -- The Genesis is not a performance car. This is a performance car:

if you want the cleaning effects from all the extra detergents in 91+ octane just use it consistently. Don't worry about the performance enhancement aspect of it if there even is one. However speaking of performance a Tuned ecu would solve all of this wouldn't it?

Mine feels great like a sports saloon .

For the 4.6 its 385hp with 91 and drops to 378hp with 87

3.8 BH ecu is now tunable through 3p8performance and their tuner alphaspeed (I'm talking custom tune bot a canned tune like the btr was) this can be done at any of there locations or remotely (they send you laptop and everything youd need to flash tune maps that were created based of data collected from your car during pulls.. 3p8performance is also working with their fabricators to make a true cold air intake and headers in the next 4 to 8 weeks. I for one am totally stoked for all of this because now that a tune is available I'm going to try and push hard for remnant performance, who just realeased a bk1 and bk1 3.8 Turbo kit, to maybe start RnD on a BH 3.8T kit.

Also from what they've told me they're in the works of eventually being able to custom tune the 5.0.

Alphaspeed Custom ECU Tune I realize it says gen coupe but there is a drop down option to select 3.8 BH sedan

That's sound like some exciting stuff , I currently have the btr tune , if they come out with something better for the 5.0 I'm all in.

Oh man a tuned 3.8T BH Sedan boy.... I'm hoping to be one of if not the first in the states.

I'll talk to them a little more about it next time we speak but I think since the obd was modified on the btr tune I'm not sure if theyd be able to re tune that same ecu or of youd need a fresh one that isnt canned.

Isnt the btr a custom tune to the preferred mods?

I'm not really sure of the specifics of it as I'm no tuner. But from what I understand no it's not im not sure what they're procedure was at btr but I believe they just took data from a test car which had limited different mods available and essentially copied/ pasted that map and applied it to your "tuned" ecu. With this custom tune through alphaspeed its
adjusting timing
Rev limit
AFRs
Shift points
Two step
And they're doing it based off the data unique to your car provided as a whole. Not just copying a map based off whatever you have installed. Again bot positive but I'm pretty sure it's something along the lines of this. That's why sometimes you mentioned it can cause some acceleration issues and in sure that's because its using data from a car that isnt yours.

Interesting.

the only thing I remember btr not advertising on there tune was the two step but with both trans tune and ecu ture from what they advertise it covers everything you listed.

when I ordered my tune I was asked my mod list im sure mine was a custom btr tune ill have to find my invoice . but the btr tune works great but if alphaspeed is able to squeeze more power out im in.
