If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi all!
Steelyman here. New member. First message.
So I just bought a 2012 4.6 with 91,xxx miles.
Love the car so far. But I noticed while I was test driving (12/10) the steering felt a little stiff.
I went back and bought the car the next day and after a nice little night time cruise and all the excitement wore off. I poped the hood to do my “getting familiar with the engine” inspection the next morning (12/12).
Well power steering was low, it BARELY touched the stick.
I took it to Tiresplus to do an inspection to verify I was correct and top the fluids off (plus the guy who changed the oil last before I bought it used 5w-30 instead of 5w-20 so they said they would Comp me an oil change).
Well the level was still low, so I guess they didn’t add any fluid even though they checked it on the inspection sheet...
The next day I called around to find the ONLY place that had Pentosin CHF 202.
$23 with tax it cost me!
I added 2-3 ounces that day and lowered the tire pressure 3 PSI to 33 PSI all around.(I did that to take a little “bump” out of the handling)
That 2-3 ounces took the level right to the “Max” line.
Honestly it drove a little better even with the lower tire pressure.
The next night I went on a fun little drive with some nice twist and turns.
When I parked the car, I could have sworn I smelled something kinda burning that smells like the CHF 202.
Fast forward to today, two days after the first round of CHF 202.
I checked it this morning and again low.
This time I only added about a half an ounce.
But still, I had to add some.
So two days, about 250 miles of spirited (nothing crazy) driving in that time, 3 plus ounces of fluid and burning CHF 202 smell.
It seems like a lot of fluid loss in a short time to me.
Or does this power steering platform commonly “use/burn” fluid?
Or is a leak more likely?
Any recalls on this part?
Anybody replaced one of these or have ANY experiences with this issue?
Thanks to all who respond!

It's a leak. No car consumes power steering fluid. Some engine oil burns in the cylinders as it makes it past the oil rings. It's normal for an unmeasurable amount to burn. There is no way, however, for power steering fluid to "burn" in that way, since it does not go in the crankcase or intake. What you smell is the power steering fluid leaking onto some hot part of the engine or exhaust and burning. You or someone will have to find the leak and repair it. It could be the power steering pump, the power steering hoses, the power steering rack, or a pressure sensor or actuator.

I have over 220K miles on my one car that still has hydraulic power steering. I've never had to add any PS fluid.

Moving this out of the forum lounge and into the first generation Genesis section...

That’s great you haven’t had any problems!
The manual says I have the EHPS in my 4.6.
Do these have a history of leaking?
I looked up the part and found it anywhere from $350- $1100. That’s not including labor, but I don’t think I would want to tackle that install myself just yet.
I’m curious if anybody (especially Hyundai certified mechanics) have tackled this issue before and how much of a pain it was?
Also any advice or pics of where the actuators, switches and hoses are would be helpful as I should be able to do those myself. But working with basic tools on a gravel driveway makes getting a car in the air kinda tough.
Thanks for the reply friend!
