Hi there everyone

I am looking for advice. I am interested in buying a used 2012 or 2013 3.8 (my commute is 30 mi each way, sometimes in heavy traffic - I don't want the V8's mpg numbers)

I have decided (and the wife approves) of getting one with the tech package only (she wants the rearview camera - and so do I - for when she drives it)...

I am 30 and have been driving a stick shift 2006 Acura TSX since it was a day old. So needless to say this is a big change for me, but we want to have kids and I wanted a big enough sedan that we could take the kid comfortably in but still have a nice daily driver for work/clients, etc.

The biggest question is, should I worry about any differences between the 2012 and 2013? If so, what?

The littler question is - if I'll be the youngest genesis owner in the world?? Wife doesn't like the Infiniti M and I think the Lexus is overpriced for the materials and lack of gizmos (although it does ride nicely and have great reliability).

I'm a gadget guy and have considered a used Volt, Fusion Hybrid, Lexus ES, GS, and will drive an Avalon and Cherokee (newer version).

Knowing I like gadgets and need a bigger car in the next 2 years - am I making a good decision?

But really, a 2012 or 2013 + Premium and Tech!??!?

Technically speaking (no pun intended), if you get the Tech Package, you also will have the Premium Package. So there are only 3 trim levels for the 3.8 V6:
  • Base
  • Premium Package
  • Technology Package

2012 was a refresh year for Hyundai Genesis with new GDI engine and new Hyundai 8-speed transmission. So even though the 2012 is almost identical to the 2013, Hyundai may have made some improvements in 2013 that are beneficial.

You would not even be close to the youngest Genesis sedan owner on this forum, although the numbers are obviously skewed to older people.

As a fellow gadget guy, get the 2013. They improved the infotainment UI a bit with the 2013, and they gave it Bluetooth streaming. I am still a bit pissed that they left this off of the Tech packages through 2012. (I have a 2012, and I have a Jones for the newer tech.)

I was about 30 when I made my move to a luxury sedan with an automatic transmission. Until then, I had only ever driven manuals in my life, but I too had a 30 mile rush hour commute. I thought I would miss the sportiness and control of the manual. Nope. You will love the Genesis. Your fatigue level will be totally different when you get home. It is a perfect size all around.

Not being the youngest guy on the forum in a Genesis by a long shot is making me feel old. Yikes.

Acura lost me on their last gen TL and TSX (no steering feel and underpowered) - the new TLX looks great and has tech, but depreciation keeps me up at night, as do first model year cars.

Haven't seen any '13s on CarMax yet - will tell my local dealer when I get closer to purchase time (early 2015 is when I'm pulling the trigger).

I have a 2012 3.8. My phone can support two Bluetooth connections at the same time. I got a bluetooth receiver from amazon that plugs into the cigarette lighter and the minu-plug in the center console. My phone connects to the car's bluetooth for the phone, and then connects to the receiver in the console (which feeds it's audio into the miniplug next to the usb slot) for the streaming audio. No wires!

I have the same setup in my car. I have the Monoprice BT audio receiver, but the music drops out frequently, like it is skipping. Someone else posted that the phone (may be an iPhone thing) does this dropout behavior when it is also connected to the car's phone profle. This makes sense, because other people can stream in my car fine without the dropouts.

It still torques me that Hyundai jacked this up in our cars.

I'm not following the purpose of this setup. My phone connects to the car's single BT receiver, which gives me hands-free phone and also audio streaming by switching to the "MP3 Play" option on my radio. I have the base package so I would assume any higher level packages could do the same. What am I missing?

I can and here's why - my TSX takes Premium Gasoline. The Genesis only requires Regular, saving me approximately 30-40 cents a gallon, which more than makes up the difference, cost wise. (sorry, environment)
 
I would (and did) pick a 13, over a 12. With a 12, you have to get the Tech package to get the 18" wheels, but with the 13, you only need the Premimum package.
The 13 Tech gets you the improved DIS navigation (along with the hard drive 30 gig music jukebox)
The jukebox will hold 5-7,000 songs. (it takes time to load them all, but YOU get to choose what you want to hear)

I assume you have driven a few Genesis'? Reason I ask is in my opinion, steering on the Genesis is quite numb also, definitely skewed towards comfort and road isolation, as opposed to road feel. There is also alot of power in the Genesis, but you really have to put your foot into it to get it, otherwise it is a gentle application of power. Its not a "spirited" driving car, its a comfortable, powerful, smooth, quiet car.

Having said that, I love my 2012 3.8 Premium. I'm 44.

Yes I did.
In my opinion Blue Link is not worth any extra money (unless you plan to hook up your smart phone to start your car)
When my free Sat. radio ends, next month, I won't be renewing it. The Hard Drive allows me to store and play the music that I want to hear.

Yes I did drive a 2011 V8 and and 2012 V6 - The V8 felt heavier to me, but the torque was addicting. Going from an inline 4 stick shift, the Genesis actually does get to 60 faster than my Acura. (both the 6 and 8 get there faster, no matter how hard I row through the 6 speeds in my TSX).

I live in Central Florida - few places are as pancake flat as here, so I don't get the pleasure of driving a stick on hills and curves like I had in Pittsburgh or Philly when I lived there...

I want the 6 for the fuel economy gains (and cheaper insurance) over the 8.

I'm ok with the way it handles, I tested an Infiniti M but the wife said it was way too loud and harsh driving. I loved the cornering but the fuel economy sucks and it doesn't feel as nice as it costs.

Premium comes with back up camera...be aware that the tech package is not covered after the normal warranty runs out and can be expensive.....you would want the extended to cover this. Just an FYI, BMW sold my 2013 premium with 19K miles for 23k back in May...so you should be able to get a deal better than that now

Thanks. Shopping at CarMax and their pricing seems to be in line with the CPO pricing from Hyundai. Warranty seems fairly priced too and actually covers more than the 10/100k from the factory.
