  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all. Just got a b line on a 2012 R spec with 20xxx miles. I can't lie, I want it. But should I? I purchased a 2013 3.8 base in Feburary. Budget was a huge reason in my decision. Things have changed and I have had a considerable pay increase recently.

I guess what I'm asking is, would you 'upgrade' from a 2013 base 3.8 to a 2012 R spec if you could? Financially it is not an issue. I already told myself I was going to stick with my genesis, but I would rather stick with that r spec! Thanks in advance guys.

Do you really want to go back a year even if it's for a rspec? I mean if the price is low, are you trading in you 2013. Is it financially responsible? I ask because some times the best deal is the one you didn't make. My 2 cents

I can't speak on an R-Spec personally (never owned one) but I've often seen on this forum where folks have had oil consumption issues with the '12 R-Spec (not with the '13 or '14, just the '12).

If it were me, I wouldn't do it. I'd hold onto the 3.8 for awhile longer, and if I still felt like I just needed an R-Spec, I'd go for a '14.

Look around for a 2013 or 2014 RSpec.

The 2012 R-SPEC has known issues with oil consumption and radio/electronics gremlins. I would wait and get a 14 R-SPEC. More of them will become available over the next year.

I agree with all three posts above mine.

I have a '12 R-spec and my cousin, who lives close by, owns a '12 3.8 Tech. Essentially the cars are identical except for the wheel size, suspension and of course the V-8 in the R-spec. Here is what I have found after driving both this past year:

The cars are almost identical to drive in city and highway use. Plenty of get up and go with the 3.8 and the ride is a bit easier on the spine. For balls-out acceleration the R-spec is in its element. Both handle well with no decided advantage to either in normal use. Neither car has been on the track, nor are either racing or sport vehicles so it makes little sense to rate them as such. Fuel mileage is better on the 3.8 but not by a lot (perhaps 5mpg on the highway). Both cars are quiet and comfortable and well appointed. The R-spec looks a bit more "bad boy" if that is important to you.

Given it to do over again I should have gone for the 3.8 I originally looked at. It was considerably less expensive and is almost the equal to the R-spec in everything except power (which isn't that useful in daily driving). Don't get me wrong, I love my R-spec and my cousin does drool a little bit when they are side by side, but the differences between them are so small and the cost is substantial.

I would keep the 3.8 for now and perhaps consider a '15 upgrade later.

One other consideration slightly off subject.....I am retired and have a nice nest egg which keeps rejuvenating itself. My kids are gone and I have no significant expenses so I can afford almost any car I desire. I do not normally make quick and emotional decisions but I did with the Genny. I went to buy a 3.8 and turned myself around once I saw the R-spec. I disappointed myself a bit when I talked myself into the R-spec because the 3.8 would have been just fine - it's the way I have lived my life after all. That said, I guess I needed to be foolish and cost be damned just once. I doubt I would do it again 'cause it just isn't me. If I were you I would put the extra paycheck $$$ in an investment. You'll sleep a little bit better at night and you'll still love the Genny.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I would go for a "new" 14 Genesis 3.8 with Premium and Tech.
(They are still around)

Good plan. Life is more than an R badge on your rear end.

Although I do grin like a Cheshire Cat when the loser pulls up next to me and asks "what the hell is that thing?"

Do not go back thinking you are getting an upgrade. If you need to do it to be financially responsible then go for it but you will not be getting an upgrade RSPEC or not. You will be losing a but ton of HP on a 2012. I have a 2013 R-SPEC 2.0 and love it. But there were huge gains from 2012 to 2013 on HP and TRQ

Ahem....they are talking about sedans. Welcome to the family, but, you appear to be in the wrong forum, sir. :welcome:
